My shadows change dramatically whenever I move

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 1:48 am

I recently got Skyrim because I got bored of it on Xbox and wanted to do some modding. So I install it, play for a little while, then I realized that the shadows act really strange, but only when I walk around or turn my head. I've looked all around for help on shadows, but I've only found the issue dealing with the sun position.

The shadows from trees change whenever I walk anywhere or turn my head. There are shadows on the sides of rocks, hills, and roads that will flicker on and off.

I would add some screenshots, but I cant use links...

If anyone has any insight into this problem, I would appreciate some assistance.

I got the game a few days ago, before the patch. Is that what is causing this problem?

Do you mean that the shadows change resolution if you move the mouse cursor randomly? If so, that's a problem everyone has.
If you mean how shadows move every 10 seconds and then flicker, that's also a problem everyone has, but then you should put this in Skyrim.ini under Display
fSunShadowUpdateTime=0
fSunUpdateThreshold=2.0

Other than that I don't know what you mean.

When will I get permission to post links? It is really hard to explain without using them...

Its not the shadows moving every ten seconds.

It happens whenever my character moves. The shadows from the trees shake and there are dark shadows on the rocks and even the road that show up, but only when I move.

So, the shadows kind of move in the same "pace/motion" as you're moving? Like, if you're sprinting they "bump/move" more, than if you walk?

Yeah, actually. Standing still has no change, but the faster I move, the worse it gets.

You might have a v-sync issue, but I'm not 100% sure. I would change try changing the v-sync settings in the ATI control panel.

just search 'ATI' in the start menu. I think its a program called ATI Catalyst. After that, I'm not really sure what to do. Try googling it or looking for a video on Youtube

That I couldn't tell you... I have an NVIDIA GPU. It has a different software.

Do you think this has anything to do with the 1.5 update?

Make sure you haven't enabled land shadows (bDrawLandShadows=0). Land shadows are disabled by default for a reason; they are not presentable. Presumably, they could be fixed in the future, but for now they cause many aesthetic problems.

As for the lines/striping, you can try changing fShadowBiasScale. The default setting is 0.1500 and some have stated that raising it as high as 4.0 can mitigate the striping effect.

The only other issue I've read about that matches what you're describing is related to the 1.5 update and ATI/AMD cards. As I don't have one of these, I can't offer my observations or suggest a solution.

I tried it, but there was no change...
When I go into third person it problem disappears, but the shadows seem to rotate strangely around their source when I rotate the camera...

The comments you added to your first video seem to indicate that you identified the problem as the drivers not being properly installed/updated.

This is someone else's video. But, I should have looked at that. Downloaded the driver (it wasn't automatically doing it from the drivers window in the control panel) and installed it. WORKING GREAT NOW!!! My FPS's have seemed to drop though, but that is an adventure for tomorrow. :P

Note: I edited the links out of this quote since I can't post them.

Is there any other way to fix this besides besides updating drivers? My computer's windows update claims my drivers are up to date, and when I try to manually install drivers it won't work (install says it couldn't find compatible hardware, probably because my Nvidia Geforce 9600M GT card is in a macbook pro's bootcamp partition running windows 7. Apple/Bootcamp releases its OWN drivers instead :( )

I'm using Nvidia Geforce 9600M GT at the latest drivers available for my computer. Nothing has worked. I wish I could go back to 1.427 (my backups have had issues). I don't care that my computer won't give me the best graphics, but I'd like to not have this massive glitch (I'm comfortable with morrowind level graphics).

This glitch as been discussed over in this thread, take a look a it: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1361153-update-15-shadows-are-invisable-move-with-camera-have-lines-issue-possably-figured-out/

Beth supposedly said that they were working on fixing this.

EDIT: Sorry, misread, not the same problem but they could be related.
