The enchanting altars in Oblivion, would allow you do a ton of crazy stuff. I miss those mechanics more and more every day. There is an Oblivion playthrough in my near future.
You could enchant a bow that done 2 damage in an area of 100". Aside from the the actual target being hit, it wasn't much for crowd control damage..but man was it fun to play around with. It was like a nuclear explosion going off in a dungeon....
Good luck finding something after that. Because crap flew EVERYWHERE!

I recently finished a second playthrough of Oblivion and it was just as fun as your post described! I used a fire-enchanted bow and area-effect arrows a lot of the time (mine were only 40' though). Watching crap fly everywhere really made me miss this kind of mechanic in Skyrim.
I wish we could fire a single arrow into a nest of spiders and watch them all fly into the air and smash into the dungeon walls. Picking them off one by one is sort of nerve wracking...
