What is sixist about being attracted to/showing interest in opposite six?

I gal and I like playing/feel more comfortable playing female characters. I don't see any problem playing what you like. It's a character you have to live with for hundreds of hours of gameplay. And they finally made it so gender isn't an issue. (though it was never much of an issue, to be honest).

Do what's going to be fun for you.

I have a stereotype of the average RPG nerd that only plays female characters so he can constantly stare at butts when playing in 3rd person. Looking at online RPGs, I am probably not totally wrong

They have to appeal to teenage and young advlt male auditories to make the whole idea profitable.

I like to play both genders. I create game characters just as I would fictional characters that I write about. I don't see myself as those characters, just the person shaping their stories.

I strongly prefer to view my characters as a kind of incarnation of ME, so I dislike playing female characters for that reason.

Certainly prefering to play one gender or another isn't sixist inherently*. Now, it might be the reasons you have for doing that are sixist in their origin.

*Beyond in the most tritest sense, since you are discriminating (e.g. making a distinction between male and female characters on the basis of gender). Though if that doesn't have anything to do with trying to enforce gender roles or devaluing a gender then it is a rather meaningless level of discrimination. Of course, one's reasons for this might be merit based, in the sense that a male character represents the player better or some such.

Well, anyhow. I wouldn't worry about what gender your characters are and if that means you are sixist. If you are sixist, then it will show up in the real world where it matters. So if you are concerned about it, take note of your attitudes, behaviors, and preconceptions with each gender. Pay attention to wether you treat one differently than another and/or make assumptions about capabilities, interests, or the like. Work to adjust your attitude and behavior to fix any problems you notice.

I have a wood elf female char and a nord male, orc male, and redgaurd female. I've found that it makes no difference really other than racial bonuses, because in skyrim your char only shouts and grunts, also I play in first person all the time.

In a game like mass effect, femshep's voice acting is far more expressive and thus I pick female shepards.

To another guy in this thread, it's not particularly true nor fair to say that the only reason people play as females is to look at their posteriors.

I don't think so, I always play males, as iv said before in these type of threads: I don't find tiny elf women threatening so of course I go with a huge badass nord with oversized muscles and beat thing to a bloody pulp. there's nothing wrong with not being able to play a female. I mean sheesh me and you must be the only two people who play guys...... most people are horny and try to play the hottest female character while have 4 female companions. I generally rock a awsome dude draugr deathlord with a battle axe for a companion (via mod). I guess what im getting at is play what your most comfertable (spelling?) playing.

P.s. Chaos quote of the day

If a man dedicates his life to good deeds and the welfare of others, he will die unthanked and unremembered. If he exercises his genius bringing misery and death to billions, his name will echo through the millennia for a hundred lifetimes. Infamy is always more preferable to ignominy. :chaos:

I play male for immersion purposes, if you came with these thoughts that male characters are 100% superior to female characters that would be kinda sixist... but it's a game so not really. :bunny:

Like it's been mentioned, it comes down to how you view your character. Is that character "you", as in do you imagine yourself inside the game, or do you see that character as a different person, whose role you're playing? Personally, I played Pen & Paper RPGs before I started playing the computer version, so I take the latter view. The characters aren't me, or an extension of me, but completely different people who I make up the motivations, personality etc. for. So I don't have any trouble playing a female character, any more than I'd have trouble playing an elf, redguard, or whatever character.
Roleplaying in it's essence is pretending to be something you're not, as accurately as possible. I don't see how playing a character of opposite six would make that any different.

HUh? You're asking a public community for a personal decision, and trusting they'd know what YOU should do?

These games are supposed to be 'immersive'. Many people play as the same six as their own or 'lifestyle'. But some do not. It's not a big deal. depending upon how old you are- younger people are establishing their identities and playing 'yourself' is healthy.

It's not 'sixist' to wish to see or feel some connection to the 'hero' in these games and that means playing what you are.

I don't think it's a world shattering issue though.

You find women attractive but unsuited for medieval combat, sounds pretty rational to me.

you just have a preference for your digital avatar in the game, it's not sixist. Now if your reasons were : women are too weak to be a Dovahkiin, then that would be sixist.

Same for me. I really don't like the idea of playing "myself in Tamriel". Of course there'll be a bit of myself in every character I play, but it's a lot more fun to have differences. I like my male Khajiit a lot, that's why it's my avatar, but never I felt it was "me in Skyrim" because no I'm not a furry and that character does despicable things I don't condone.
