I've taken a break from Skyrim until DLC is out and played The Witcher 2, which I had started but not finished.

In some ways Skyrim spoiled me- it was more frustrating than ever to come up on invisible walls and realize you're on narrow corridors. But, the games are very different and TW2 is so awesome story-wise that I wasn't disappointed. I'm just glad that RPG players have some choices.

Just "new vs old". You're comparing Skyrim to games you've played. To me, while I'm still enjoying Skyrim, I don't find it as good a game as many games I've played in the past. I can tell it's just going to be a footnote in the list of games I've played. It might make honorable mention, but wont make my top ten list. The Ultima's are still higher even though they're far too dated for a direct comparison.

No... I like the Bioware "formula" about equally. It would be amazing if some of their best elements were combined.

Yes and no
I do prefer open world games and Bethesda make the best open world games around atm IMO
That said theres still things they could do better and learn from other developers

Nope. Replaying ME 1 and loving it. It has a whole 'nother vibe than Skyrim though.

I put ME 1 down for a minute and loaded up Skyrim and I was like "Alright, I'm gonna get my crew, see how they're doing, make sure their skilled up...oh wait...it's just me...and and this uh...scenery."

Nah I can still get into other RPGs. I can enjoy plenty of games for what they bring to the table.

TES is about open exploration, doing quests when you want, letting you decide what you want to do. The others are about the story. Open worlds can be lacking in the story department, the more linear games can feel a little on rails at times. Both have their merits. Both have their limitations. Preference between the two is a matter of taste. I will take open world over story, but that's just me.
New Vegas manages open world and decent stories, though, I have to say.

I dig TES 3-5 and Fallout 3 & New Vegas... most other RPG's in the last few years have all been meh to me.

I tried playing Mass Effect for a few hours, but I really couldn't get into it.. It's like SW:KOTOR but way less appealing.

Oh.. and Final Fantasy 13 svcked all 3 of my balls.

Mass effect and the witcher 2 are better in my opinion. Dont get me wrong, i love TES for its race choices and everything, but the witcher 2 and mass effect are just so much more fun.

It's not that great of an RPG, so no... it still can't hold a candle up to many contemporary RPGs in story/writing quality, characterization, choices and consequences, etc. Its soundtrack is exceptionally beautiful and I like the art style and general look of the gameworld (could do with a bit more color, however), but what does it achieve as an RPG that's so great?

that would be cool, however, if i had to choice just one formula it would be beth. The flashy citmatics from bioware get sooooooooooo old even by the second playthrough.

So to answer the OP question i say YES it has to a certain degree.

Not really, although since I played Morrowind I have a tougher time enjoying linear games.
