This week I have truly realised that the general gaming population is [censored]. Somehow, skyrim, a massive 300 hour open world game with oodles of atmosphere, style, and beauty, against a annually rehashed first person shooter of which every iteration is a slight improvement from the previous years offering.
I am actually suprised that some game developers are even putting their lives on the line with risky, albeit creatively amazing games, when crappy unimaginative first person shooters that have been developed for no more than a year sell billions
Ive known this for years.
Once upon a time gaming was more niche, and was considered somewhat geeky. The gaming population had a level of sophistication, and dare I say it... taste. Not that this was 100%, but definatly a significant portion of the community.
Then gaming became more popular, which was initially seen as a good thing. But with the influx came hoards of 'jocks' and the brain dead. Companies then started gearing games to these newcomers, instead of to the existing customers, despite the fact what they HAD been doing attracted the new people in the first place. Soon 'streamlining' and 'accessibility' were words to be feared and reviled, and innovation and change were put to the side so that every year a new dumbed down FPS could be marketed to the brain dead.
Not that I dont play some FPS's, but the industry is in a dark place right now as far as Im concerned. With dumbed down gaming, and expensive DLC that does very little.
Thankefully Bethseda is one of the last bastions holding against this darkness.
