Skyrim's competition this week

In the meantime, while I hope that Skyrim reaches those heights, I doubt it will. I think Skyrim ends up taking a respectable second place in games released this week.

Look at the comments. It seems skyrim is getting quite some votes compared to Zelda.

The only game competing for my time with Skyrim will be Battlefield 3 for the insanely amazing multiplayer action. What's MW3?

9.0 being a flop is an interesting choice. A stupid one, you are stupid, is what I'm saying.

Zelda is zelda. They're fine, nothing new or that interesting. I can't trust any nintendo review to be honest. It's all just nostalgia.

This.

Zelda games have been the same since Majora's mask imo. If anybody deserves a 10, its Skyrim for trying more new stuff then others have done in their entire series.

While we wait for the Skyrim reviews and playing the game ourselves, I thought it would be interesting to see how it might stack up against the competition so far.

It looks like MW3 may be a flop, though certainly not in game sales. IGN gave it a tepid 9.0. After reading the review itself, I get the feeling that it should be lower than 9.0, but we all know angering a big publisher isn't good for long-term business. More interesting are the Metacritic user reviews: people are absolutely slamming the game. The backlash is really surprising, and there are very few dissenters. Overall, it looks like MW3 is no competition for Skyrim from a pure gameplay point of view. I can't say I'm unhappy about that, because IMO, the CoD series lost its true panache a while ago.

Zelda: Skyward Sword is an entirely different story. Game Informer doesn't have their review up yet, but their reviewer says he's giving it the first 10 he's ever given at Game Informer. He does mention that the boss battles are truly great and a big step above the usual "figure out the weak point, disable boss, attack three times, repeat" type of gameplay. The only other reviews up seem to be in the 10 range too.

Say what you want about Nintendo or the Zelda series, but to consistently turn out that kind of quality in a franchise is truly remarkable. Hats off to them. In the meantime, while I hope that Skyrim reaches those heights, I doubt it will. I think Skyrim ends up taking a respectable second place in games released this week.

What do you guys think?

TES games have steadily increased their following with each release. I don't see that being any different for this title. The only reviewer I have ever found that seems to feel the same way about games as I do are the folks at G4. I think this title will hit high numbers in reviews and sales.

and the thing folks may not realise (though someone pointed this out earlier in the thread

TES games have legs

i.e. they continue to sell several years after release

whereas the others will not

Frankly, I don't think many people will review the PC version, and honestly, I think it's modding that pushes these games beyond the 10's...

But honestly, though I can admit that this latest Zelda looks great (in terms of gameplay), I hate the happy go luck feel they've adopted for the series. When I initially played the NES, SNES, and even the N64 games, I thought the game would eventually go in a darker direction. I though what TES IS, is what they aspired Zelda to be... I was wrong I suppose.

The main console versions haven't gone in a happy go lucky direction. There is no consistent direction, actually - Majoras Mask, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword. Super dark, less dark, darker again, now it looks less dark again, though I don't think that means there will be a lack of emotion. Plus, the gameplay is what matters most, and I've never been disappointed.

Come on guys, read what I said. There are a lot of user posts on game sites really slagging on MW3. I also think that IGN wanted to go lower than 9.0, but that's like business suicide for them. Go look at all the games IGN has given 9.0 and above to, and tell me that all of them absolutely lived up to that score.

That's probably true for every game that's ever been released. Recently, Uncharted 3 got blasted by long time players for gun targeting problems, BF3 got panned for its Origins DRM scheme(look at Amazon scores for PC version), and now it's MW3's turn. I guarantee you the forums will be filled with Skyrim hate by people having technical problems or because of disappointment in some aspect of the game that was overhyped.

MW3 seems really terrible. Saw a few videos about it on youtube, rehashing and crap, silly sloppy lazy work. xD

Anyway, Skyward Sword will definitely be an awesome title, all Zelda games have been awesome so far and this one will too. But a few years from now I think Skyrim will be in a healthier state. Skyward Sword will have no match against the huge amount of replay value and modding for Skyrim.

MW3 apparently had 9 million pre-orders. Doesn't sound like a flop to me.
