Skyrim Fail #140: Diseases

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 5:26 pm

Daggerfall had about 18, but they were capable of killing you! :vaultboy:

Oblivion and Morrowind had about 25, but they couldn't kill you. :sadvaultboy:

Skyrim has... 7. And most barely affect you. :cryvaultboy:

I wish diseases were capable of being deadly like they were in Daggerfall. Although you wouldn't die in Oblivion or Morrowind, getting sick was a major hindrance to you because it could severely lower your stats. The only bad disease in Skyrim is Rockjoint, but other than that they are overly mild. Disease was never a massive feature of TES games, but I wish they had as much impact as they did in Daggerfall. It made all diseases sort of like contracting vampirism in the newer games, in the sense it gave you the challenge of curing yourself quickly before tragedy occurred.

I'm aware that many people wouldn't like the Daggerfall disease system, but I think the Morrowind/Oblivion system was still a nice addition to the game without causing undue frustration like the Daggerfall system might have. I don't like diseases in Skyrim, simply because they don't really add any new dynamics to gameplay or roleplaying like they did in previous games. They felt a bit tacked on IMO.

My solution would be simple, add some more dangerous diseases in with a DLC, just like they did with Oblivion.

What do you guys think? Discuss! :starwars:

I like the idea of diseases, since you can absorb them with spell absorption. Skeevers just recharge my mana when they hit me. :(

Would also make you think more carefully about your journeys if you never fast travelled anywhere. Deadly disease in the middle of no where would have you freaking out. Would have been good if you could have gotten Frostbite somehow in Skyrim.

Oh... I can assure you that spell absorb also absorbs poison, slowing from frost spells, and any other spell-like effect. It even absorbs perk effects like Shadow Warrior and Quick Reflexes... whoops! :)

I would like some deadlier diseases added into the game via an expansion/dlc, but I would also like a hardcoe mode that forces the need to eat and sleep and turns off essential status on NPCs save for kids of course.

Yeah, I could always go for more diseases. Maybe some modder can add in the common cold. Active Effects: Cannot Shout for 3 days.

Just no astral vapors every time I had a character contract it I couldn't stop laughing because of a mod that made your character fart purple smoke every time you caught it.

And half of the titles are movie references, dialogue from Star Wars, or the names of old songs.

I love making threads, but I'm running out of Star Wars dialogue relevant to features in Skyrim. Until I think of some more Stars Wars thread titles, I shall continue my series of negativity.

Strange thing I've noticed is that, in my imperial, Nord, and Thalmor playthrough, It was just the Nord that was getting rockjoint from beasts. Is this a trait of the Nords? It certainly isn't listed as a race specific trait.

Something I can agree on, there is tones of times (Well 4) where I got a diesese from something or other without noticing and played for hours until I went back to a town to sell loot and they mentioned something about me being sick and not to give it to them. Other wise I wouldn't have even noticed the sickness in SKyrim.

ahhh Daggerfall

You are not well and may not survive a prolonged journey

"We'll just see about that"

*Game Over Screen*

Yes deadlier diseases are needed

In the past games you can cure disease easily with a spell. Which is non-sense really since you can immediately cure yourself and go about your business.

Skyrim diseases are more dangerous simply because they debuff you until you get back to town or has a cure disease potion handy.

However, I feel that they could have done more for a better disease system. They could have made disease have 10 stages where penalties get worst at each stage, unless cured magically. The recovery stage is reach after stage 10 and penalties get better at each stage until stage 15 where the disease is removed and you are granted immunity from it permanently.

Daggerfall diseases will kill you if left untreated;

Morrowind diseases are separated into different types on severity.

Chances are diseases are being phased out in streamlining efforts and will be removed altogether in the next game?

I had the same thing happen. I spent hours with witbane before I realized I had it. I want diseases to be at least somewhat of a burden to the player, not something that is literally unnoticeable.

I'd like diseases to have an incubation period like in daggerfall; and progressively worsening symptoms if left untreated. That way, not noticing the diseases will be dangerous.
After all diseases are suppose to be detrimental to your health

They might as well, since right now they're kind of pointless. Same for traps.

Don't forget to mention trap springers are kind out of place too, if you generally are sneaking or walking/moving semi cautiously you can stop in time to see the traps harmlessly go off in front of you. ;)

They really dropped the ball on drugs and diseases. Seriously, 7 diseases that barely affect you? And what about skooma? That [censored] was DEADLY back in Oblivion! Yeah, you got tweaked off of it, but it permanently damaged your intelligence. As someone who was an Altmer Mage who turned to crime and the bottle, I couldn't go to the Divines to heal my 0 intelligence.

Ditto on the drugs and diseases

I'd like diseases to be varied, from a minor annoyance (slight decreases in skills) to gradually debilitating to the point of paralysis (gradual draining of stamina, magicka, or even health), to downright deadly (also gradual, but damaging health to the point where it's 0/0)

Cure disease potions are kinda abundant in Skyrim too, unlike in Oblivion or Morrowind (or at least, that's what I noticed). I'd like it to be rarer, or have different diseases only curable by different ingredients

Blessings of the Divine should also not be too prevalent as a form of treating all diseases

As for Skooma, or even alcohol, why not have more permanent effects, depending on your stamina (i.e resistance to addiction)?
