Skyrim lacks comedy.

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 2:59 pm

Lately I find myself making my own comedy, such as lighting a mammoth on fire and kiting it to a fight between some Thalmor and Stormcloak troops, only for the mammoth to get hit with an axe and turn on the entire group.

That or running into caves yelling stuff along the lines of "HONEY I'M HOOOOOME!" and lighting anything that moves ablaze. Theres a lot of fun to be had in Skyrim, alas you have to make most of it.

It's certainly no Fallout game, where you can get away with things like Liberty Prime and FISTO.

There's humor if you know where to look though. A lot of the in-game books have humorous moments, there's M'Aiq the Liar, Cicero (although I can't stand the guy), Sheogorath (another hit or miss), and a few others.

Crassius Curio still hands down wins funniest character in TES for me.

Skyrim's funny moments aren't scripted, [censored] just happens. I remember in the game jam interview with Howard, he mentioned a Skyrim story he'd heard where an NPC wouldn't leave this guy's house, no matter how hard he tried. He would murder the guy, then when he came back home the guy would be there. Just like doing everyday things in a house that wasn't his. Now that may or may not be funny to the guy playing but I thought it was pretty hilarious.

Aside from that, countless little funny things happen in Skyrim almost every time I play.

The unintended (situational) humour is much funnier in my opinion. An Argonian who thanks me for bringing the stones he needed so bad for his rings, and the next instant he shows me the door "you have some nerve coming here..."

Yeah I miss the crazy that Fallout has but that's what makes Fallout = Fallout and Skyrim = Skyrim :)

Some odd stories if you come across the right book, few pretty funny ones.

It lacks comedy, good job too, but theres plenty of humour. Just visit the jarls court in a few towns. No pie fights but plenty to smile at.

I disagree.

There isn't as much humour as there was in Oblivion, and characters like Sheogorath and M'aiq have lost their charm... but there's still more than enough for a game like this.

I don't think it should have comedy in it.
If I had my way the only humour in it would be dark and distinctly morbid.

But maybe that's just me...

I know I know...it's in the middle of a war and dragons are coming back. But I have only encountered 1 or 2 funny things. One was hilarious! Cicero was with me and I was sneaking up to a bandit camp and all of the sudden he just starts dancing! I just bursted out laughing in my room. Anyways who agrees skyrim needs some more comedic moments? And feel free to share yours.
Skyrim lacks a lot more than just comedy...

Watching Nazeem get told off by the meat seller in Whiterun is pretty damn funny in my opinion. When I first saw it I laughed out loud.

J'Zargo.

The Bard's College quests.

M'aiq has a couple of masterpieces.

I don't believe Bethesda can do subtle humor, it would just come off as something obnoxious like the arena really devoted fan from Oblivion.

Some of their lines strike me as an obvious attempt by Bethesda at humour / meme material... like the 'someone stole your sweetroll' line (which incidentally isn't very funny because it's such an obvious attempt).

Making the guards comic material is a disappointing move for me, Oblivion and especially Morrowind depicted them as serious and intimidating as I needed them to be.

I've never taken that as comedy, that to me is an attempt by the guards to belittle the player character, and entirely in keeping with them being snarky.

That's what I thought.

On topic: It would ruin the atmosphere of Skyrim if the game was absolutely hilarious. I quite like how you have a few obvious jokes and a few more subtle ones woven amongst the serious tone of the game.

I quite like that TES games takes themselves mostly serious. The lack of goofy refences and asinine one-liners is a big part of why I still play Skyrim from time to time.

Well yeah... it's meant to belittle the player-character, but it's also intended to be humorous for the player. The whole http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Sweetroll_%28Oblivion%29 thing is kind of an ongoing joke in the TES series, starting with Arena.

Personally I would like guards in such a backwater province to be untrusting and they get nicer as you prove yourself. They should also have an air of being on their guard and being a bit scared, after all, they (just a few ordinary guys with swords) are facing off against one of the greatest menaces ever to attack Skyrim. They Definitely have no right to be half as cocky as they are.
