yes, it about 2 more years, this will be the new standard or definition of what a RPG is now.

Lol. You belong in a PnP RPG forum around five years ago, bemoaning the effect computer games and movies will have on the hobby and endlessly going over how 1e or 2e where such better additions of *insert RPG here* because you actually needed to use all your different dice during CC and it took a whole session (or maybe two) to role up a character.

Shockingly enough PnP games still exist! And computer games don't appear to have had much of an impact on them! And people are still going over the same arguments and bemoaning etc. today. And will still be five years from now.

Ah, the more things change and the more things stay the same.

Children in Africa think a bread each day is good enough.

Children in USA think three meals each day with fish and meat aren't good enough.

It all depends what you have experienced before.

You think the game is so great because you've never played this kind of game before. Just like when someone who's been living in rural area for half of his life went to a big city, he'll just "woah".

But to others who have played a lot, they may not think it as so great because they've seen a lot.

My first CRPG was Bards Tale and I have been playing rpgs ever since. I think Skyrim is a great rpg.

and if its not the best game then what is the best game of this type cause i want to play a game that is bigger and better than skyrim. so please fill me in.

My goodness, I've seen TES games implied, but not said outright... unless I'm missing something. Ok, her you go...

If you like Skyrim, the closest thing to it is Oblivion. They feel very much alike... seeing that Skyrim is the next chapter.

If you like the looks and feel of Skyrim and Oblivion, try Fallout 3. Many people say it is Oblivion with guns. I didn't think I would care for that idea, but it is just as good as Oblivion... definitely just as fun.

Now I'm going to introduce you to the ancestors of Skyrim. And it's the changes that Skyrim has made from them that makes many of us upset...

Morrowind... my personal favorite TES game. It doesn't look like Skyrim, but it still in a full 3D world. If you get the newer graphics enhancers, it can look just as good as Oblivion. Play it. It's for your own good. You'll thank me later. You can take that to the bank.

Daggerfall... the king of TES. The biggest, the baddest. It was what TES was meant to be. A game-world so big, you will NEVER walk across it. In fact, you will probably never even walk anywhere outside of a city or inside of a dungeon. Over 62,000 miles of world. Play it, live it, love it. You may just die in it before you finish it. And there's no excuse whatsoever to not try it... because you can get it here for free...

http://www.elderscrolls.com/daggerfall/

You will need http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1 to play it, though. Read through these http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Running_Under_DOSBox#Daggerfall_.28free_release.29 also.

If you just want to save all of that work, you could just download http://theelderscrolls.wiwiland.net/?title=Daggerfall_:_DaggerfallSetup_EN. Supposedly, it is ready-to-play without all of the tinkering. I haven't tried it, though, so no guarantee.

As for other games, Dragon Age: Origins is very nice. So is the "Tales" series. Tales of Symphonia is incredible. The sequel is descent... but nothing compared to the first. Tales of Vesperia is quite similar to the first.

While it's not an RPG, Half-Life 2 is AMAZING. Mount & Blade is great if you like large-scale first-person medieval combat. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is also a classic.

Do yourself a favor OP and look up some Let's Plays on youtube for Witcher 2 and Dragon Age: Origins. If your still awake after a couple episodes, go for it lol. It kept me from buying DA:O, unfortunately I did end up getting Witcher 2 before checking it out and reading the forum.

^ I've heard good things about Mount & Blade and it does sound interesting, I might actually try that out sometime.

Skyrim looks good on the outside but it is a very hallow game with features that are dated & nothing revolutionary. Its like having a nice italian roll sandwich with spam on the inside. The roll is nice and looks good but the meat in the roll is lacking.

If Skyrim is not good, then Fallout: New Vegas is. If Fallout: New Vegas is not, then Morrowind.

The only recent RPG I would recommend is The Witcher 2. Great game with something like 41 paths to finish the game. Your decisions in the game really can affect later stages.
I found the combat enjoyable enough and with plenty of advlt humour/dialogue, interesting characters, a great storyline and drop dead graphics on Ultra settings, it`s a great way to while away some time.

I do agree that Skyrim is a great game in it`s own right, it has it`s flaws like every other game, but it`s still heaps of fun. The only other games that have me at 200 hours in, would be past TES games.
I wonder if the people who are enjoying the game the most, are more the types that don`t compare Skyrim to other games, or more so, past TES games...
This.

The Witcher 2 is an excellent game, and imo more deserving of GOTY than Skyrim. Plus, it looks fantastic.

Basically, the only competition (In the same genre and similar gameplay) that Skyrim has is other Bethesda's games (And New Vegas) or, usually, very old games.

Maybe we should issue Bethesda for the monopoly of Open-World RPG Medieval and Apocalyptic games. :teehee:

http://www.divinity2.com/

you're welcome ;p

Divinity 2 is awesome, I played it fully, did every little quest/thing I could in it, around 70 hours of gameplay, but it doesn't have the opennes, posibilities, exploring, number of quests and a whole lot of other things Skyrim has, Skyrim really is on a league of its own.

But you have selected a great choice of game too ;)

Daggerfall will be a great alternative once the DaggerXL overhaul is done. Better graphics, better controls.

Indeed, they can definitely use some polish, but I haven't played a game similar to them yet. Not to mention all of the mods for them. The original Mount & Blade just had a Lord of the Rings conversion released called The Last Days. It's quite interesting! :-D

I hope and pray that is true... and that it is finished soon! :-D

Ps. Daggerfall is not the alternative to anything. Everything else is the alternative to it ;-)

i am new to the whole scrolls games. i bought the game when it got released and have not stopped playing it and i love everything about it. i've never played a game where you can kill something or place something down then come back days later and the dead body of the object you put down is still there if the bandits haven't got there first. you meet people or complete quest for them and when you meet then again days later they remember who you are and what you did for them. i love not being tied to a quest or dungeon i can just leave whenever i want without completing what i have to do. i love the mixed combat and also the companions that follow you and help you out.

but these are only a small point of what im getting at. what i dont understand is why so many people don't like skyrim and all that it has to offer. why are texture pops and glitches in a game so vast such a big deal to so many. and if its not the best game then what is the best game of this type cause i want to play a game that is bigger and better than skyrim. so please fill me in.

Go play Daggerfall and Morrowind and realize what a REAL RPG is. Those games are bigger and better than Skyrim, in all ways RPG.

Baldur's Gate 2 remains the greatest game of all time, for me at least.

this. And that still is true today. It aged extremely well (not at all!).
Number 2 would be Morrowind for me, at its time. Today, I am not so sure anymore. It still is extremely good, but didn't age too well (there is the Morrowind Overhaul 2.0 though...soon).

Fallout: New Vegas is the same type, and better; albeit set in a completely different era.

..Not that this takes away from the fact that Skyrim is a good game.

New Vegas better than skyrim?!? Looooooooool

Yea I agree. CD Projeck may not have at much resources as Bethesda but they tried their best to do a game, listen to their community and provide good support after release(free DLCs and free enhanced edition).

Bethesda have so much resources that they can do so much, but they are so prudent and not even willing to use a new engine.

I was kind of surprised when I saw in spike tv award that Dragon Age 2 was nominated in the RPG section but not The Witcher 2.

thanks for the feedback i do here new Vegas getting talked about quite a lot on this forum so i might invest in that once i've had my fill of skyrim. but don't think that will be for some time yet.

You can pick new Vegas up for £6 on eBay, and there is a reason for that, it's just not that great man, not IMO anyway, that's why you can pick it up so damn cheap.

I've played TES since Daggerfall, and countless other great RPGs, I still like Skyrim a lot, and will play it a lot. I don't think it's comparable to a piece of a bread.

OP, if you like it, keep playing it. Also, experiment with whatever else you can get your hands on, who knows what you'll find that you absolutely love?

The mod Brytenwalda is also pretty epic last I looked.

I'd actually like the horses from Mount & Blade to inspire the horses from Skyrim a bit more.

The only thing that I hate about New Vegas is the linearity of the start of the game... Oblivion, Morrowind and Skyrim have a Tutorial thing and that's it. New Vegas no... It's linear until you enter The Strip. (After going trough Goodsprings, Nipton, Novac, always in that order)

IMO skyrim is goty with dark souls very, very close second.

If skyrim is not your bag, try demons souls or dark souls.

Just be thankful it isn't a comparison to a car accident. In the "if a car maker released a car that exploded and killed you then it would be a crime, but Bethesda can release a game with bugs and people are going to give them GOTY - WHERE IS THE JUSTICE" sense.

Hyperbole is funny sometimes.

It's just nitpicking. Skyrim is a great game, but there's always something to improve or to add, but it doesn't make a game bad.
