so if skyrim is not great then what game is. cause i want to

Skyrim is amazing. It has a lot of problems, but they don't keep it from being a great game. Well 1.2 did, but that was a typical Bethesda Clustercluck and they fixed it uncharacteristically fast.

i love Mount & Blade warband. I would definitely recommend that. I cant say its better than Skyrim, but its very engaging in its own way. Its depth will surprise you.

thanks for the feedback i do here new Vegas getting talked about quite a lot on this forum so i might invest in that once i've had my fill of skyrim. but don't think that will be for some time yet.

I strongly suggest playing Fallout 3 before New Vegas. My personal opinion is that FO3 had a much better story line and DLC. New Vegas improved on some things, but I felt that it paled to the story of FO3.

If you like Skyrim, you will be very comfortable in FO3.

The problem for me here is the connotations of the word "game".

If you treat Skyrim or Oblivion etc, even Fallout 3 or New Vegas, as a "game" you will just not get it.

The story just will not live up to expectation, in writing or pace or length, depth, breadth whatever the hell you wanna call it. The NPC,s are gonna be shallow and repetitive if you are relying on them to fulfil a role for you other than a place to go to shop, get the next waypoint or a little tiny bit of exposition in a short story. They are not in the world for you, they are there for themselves.

And that is the point I dont see much here. Skyrim is not built around your character, it will go on regardless of what you do or say, same with fallout. If your approach is one of doing all the questlines, getting the tougest gear and "beating" everything than you really are going to miss out on the thing that does make this series so great. And it is a simple thing really, you are handed a world. Go and play with it.

You dont need to be led everywhere, shake off the hand that is trying to guide you (through story and 'completionism') and pick up what you want when you want. Dont rely on the world to make it happen for you, just get in there and live a virtual fantasy life within the available structures. If you look at it like an undirected world simulator, which is trying like crazy to get away from it's software and hardware limitations, which is causing a few issues I must add, then you can hopefully burst out of the "game" mentality and into something completely different.

I am not sure there are too many other series that allow even the remotest possibility of this. Most other stuff I have seen has been very story driven, and it's whole structure has been one of tunnels and funnelling into 'unlocking next area' kind of stuff. I play shooters for that kind of ride.

that being said, I think fallout 3 is my next 'goto' game, then Oblivion with a juicy selection of mods. Or Zork...now there was a game you had to think about.

Skyrim is great, but sadly AAA-titles tend to disappoint one way or another these days, because we've come to expect so much and developers are under so much pressure from fans and publishers to make a great product in a short time.

I was going to flame this but well, its just your opinion..

Just buy Skyrim, its not that horrible. Everybody just compares it to older games what they played before Skyrim and they remember them better than what they really were(even thought those games did some things better than new games), its like in WoW where people say that cata is unbalanced in PVP, well its much better than vanilla, TBC, and WOTLK, but they just don't remember that.

Skyrim is a great game, but a mediocre TES game.

I play TES for the amount of choice I'm given, a lot of which has been cut out in Skyrim and the magic system is nothing if not a hollow shell of its former self right now. My favorite TES game so far is Morrowind and 2nd is Oblivion with Skyrim claiming 3rd spot. But I can only wait and see if that will change after I finally get around to playing Daggerfall.

I've played TES since Daggerfall, and countless other great RPGs, I still like Skyrim a lot, and will play it a lot. I don't think it's comparable to a piece of a bread.

You clearly missed the point. I never compare Skyrim as bread nor fish and meat.

It's just when you first experience something new you'll usually be amazed by it. Like once I went to Toys R Us and saw a kid's parent pointing to a FIFAxx game on PS3 saying how "real" the players are and how great the graphics is.
But everyone who have played their share of games, especially on PC, know the graphics in FIFA is just fine, but not great.

For many players new to the elder scrolls series or even RPGs many things in Skyrim may seem unbelievable to them. I once heard a friend saying how amazing that one can stripe all the equipments of dead foes. But anyone who has played more than one TES game would probably not surprised by that.

When you experience more, your standard will also rise. Of course for some Skyrim is still great. But it is UNDERSTANABLE(contrary to OP's idea of cannont understanding) that many others will find the game not so amazing.

Kids in Africa find having meat in the meal amazing.
Many kids in USA probably not so. But of course there will still be a lot kids in USA who find the meal great.

I'd actually like the horses from Mount & Blade to inspire the horses from Skyrim a bit more.

Hahaha, I would like the entire combat system from Mount & Blade to inspire all of the TES games :-P
Just make the animations and controls more fluid, and it's good to go! :-D

Skyrim is great, but sadly AAA-titles tend to disappoint one way or another these days, because we've come to expect so much and developers are under so much pressure from fans and publishers to make a great product in a short time.

I at least expect developers to maintain the level of their previous titles. That seems to be more of an extreme expectation these days, sadly.

And if they truly are under such deadlines, that's all the more reason to not reinvent the wheel. Just supercharge the engine, put a spoiler on the back, and give the old game a fresh coat of paint. All would be good then! :-D

Haha, very close. It seems that modern developers would think the following is more correct...

"If you can't go the wrong way, any game works."

My goodness, I just bit into my first Daggerfall dungeon last night. I was sent to hunt a were-creature. I have a silver flail, so it shouldn't be a problem, right? Well, after clearing the first few rooms of this MAZE, I come upon a harpy. I soon learn that NOTHING I am carrying can even injure the thing. So I resort to something I NEVER have to do in Skyrim... RUN AWAY!!! I end up getting cornered with low health, and my only means of escape is to fall down through a hole in the floor. It got me away from one of the harpies, but I end up in a multi-level flooded room with catwalks... and completely cut off from my escape route. Now I'm stuck, completely lost, with only a sliver of health, surrounded by rooms full of imps. And I still have no clue where that were-creature is.

Daggerfall is AMAZING... even if it is killing me :-P

i am new to the whole scrolls games. i bought the game when it got released and have not stopped playing it and i love everything about it. i've never played a game where you can kill something or place something down then come back days later and the dead body of the object you put down is still there if the bandits haven't got there first. you meet people or complete quest for them and when you meet then again days later they remember who you are and what you did for them. i love not being tied to a quest or dungeon i can just leave whenever i want without completing what i have to do. i love the mixed combat and also the companions that follow you and help you out.

but these are only a small point of what im getting at. what i dont understand is why so many people don't like skyrim and all that it has to offer. why are texture pops and glitches in a game so vast such a big deal to so many. and if its not the best game then what is the best game of this type cause i want to play a game that is bigger and better than skyrim. so please fill me in.

Keep in mind there are millions of people playing and a vocal minority complaining. This is typical of any franchise game but the number of games purchased (and continuing to be purchased) and all the stellar reviews is a pretty good indication the people that do not like skyrim are a minority.

I love it myself but I have played all the TES games so I do understand the complaints and sympathize. That said, people need to understand things change and you need to appreciate what the changes bring to the table rather than endlessly searching for what you appreciated in the last game.

Alot of games mentioned already.
Surprised no one brought up KOTOR.

Also, granted if you go back and play some of these games now, you will be looking at out dated graphics so it will through you off. At the same time you will realize how much more in-depth alot of those games are compared to Skryim. You would think it would have been the opposite though but no, its not. This is i think why alot of people are let down by Skyrim and feel its not even an Elder Scrolls game itself.

Dragon Age Origins was a great game. Then Dragon Age 2 came out rushed & sold on the hype of Origins. That is what Skryim is to me, hyped off the TES name & past games like Morrowind & Obilivion. So much expectations but people were blinded by the graphics and such ( which on PC aren't even that great, the yhave to be modded in ).

Now depending if you play PC or console, I guess I could see Skryim being a great RPG for console. Frankly though, its not even GOTY. Go play FO3 or FONV and graphics aside, you will see how hollow Skyrim is compared to them. There just is no immersion in this game :(

So a list of games...on PC

Witcher 1 & 2
Stallker
DA:Origins
KOTOR
Morrowind
Oblivion even
Dues Ex
Hitman series ( great game and can kinda be in the rpg category )
Mount & Blade

I liked Morrowind the best, because it had more skills, spellmaking, superior enchanting system, and more available choices overall. Skyrim just has better graphics, physics, and animations (thats it... oh and I guess dragons).

Some people don't like non-linear open ended games, they prefer games that don't let them have any choice and always tell them exactly what to do.

Skyrim is a very big game, It's easy to see why it might overwhelm some people who aren't used to playing games like this.
Most of the people who don't like it are the people who like these games.

To OP: Its an Internet forum about a video game. Complaining and suggestions are expected. Happens on every forum.

Baldur's Gate Saga comes close second.
