Of course both are Nordic, but the general art design of both is really extremely similar. Heck, one of B&G's characters sounds like he could be the voice of the Jarl of Whiterun (and speaking of him, King Hrothgar has the same throne, and another character wears the exact same style of fur).

Another thing directly copied is a booby trap consisting of some deer antlers tied together dropping from above.

Skyrim is a total ripoff of Oblivion IMO. The setting is different and it has better graphics but the game play is almost identical.

Seriously though. I think the use of the name Hrothgar is a tribute to the poem, NOT the movie.

the film http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0402057/.

Buildings, landscapes, costumes, characters, just about everything.

Pretty much all Bethesda added was mages & dragons.

Want some examples? The king is named Hrothgar, his meeting hall looks just like the Whiterun buildings both inside & out, and one of the characters looks strikingly like a Hargraven...

The Elder Scrolls series has been around a lot longer than that ridiculously bad movie; also, the series is inspired by many fantasy books, films, short stories, art work etc, you could argue that Whiterun hold is completely stolen from Rohan in Lord Of The Rings for example.

Yes and even recent additions such as being able to see your hand while casting spells was borrowed from Bioshock. A big hint is the Expert Destruction Spell, Incinerate. It doesn't matter where the ideas come from as long as it is presented in a fresh and interesting way. Though the game 3D Dot Game Heroes is a great example how shamelessly copying most of an entire game can produce new and unexpected results...

That's because a human being can't create anything original.

You can imagine a Mountain made of Gold, but only because you are familiar with concepts of mountains and gold. You can't invent a new and original plot because it will be based off something you have already seen or read or heard.
Very true. It is hard to create anything truly new and original and although not impossible most writters now I think rely on how they tell the story rather than whether it is new or not.

Everything pretty much takes influence from some place or another whether it's in movies, music or in this case a game and for what it's worth I love what Bethesda have done with their idea

Have you ever played the game Super Mario Bros. 2? It was totally a ripoff of Doki Doki Panic.
Have you ever played the game Trials HD? It was totally a ripoff of Excitebike.
Have you ever played the game Fallout: New Vegas? It was totally a ripoff of Fallout 3.
Have you ever played the game Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball? It was totally a ripoff of a dream I had once.

And the list goes on.
Your dream was a total rip-off of my dream. o.o;

Will someone please I've the OP a history book? And some glasses?

Hrothgar was a real Danish king.
Whiterun buildings are based off of Viking architecture.
And Hagravens are just really ugly Harpies from greek mythology.

None of this is copyrighted material, because the originators all died over a thousand years ago.

everyone gets inspiriation and ideas from other things, where do you get this idea everything has to be "original" ...not much is really original, sometimes original is boring, so you can be original and make cow pie ice cream and it might be original but not good to eat...skyrim is kinda like a combination of disney movies, fairy tales from my childhood, indian jones, lord of the rings etc all put together, it has elements of lots of stuff, thats what bethesda does in their games, thats why they're good, they put their interpretation into a gameworld...and they use familiar themese and ideas, things they know people can relate to and enjoy.

The only 'rip-off' I've seen in Skyrim is Babette, but I still prefer to think of her as just a really unsubtle easter egg.

I don't think you can call a cliche a ripoff.

The eternal child was pretty much cliche even before interview with a vampire.

So? It takes place in Skyrim. Are you new to the lore of the series? Skyrim and the Nords are based on old Nordic culture.
