Skyrim is a ripoff of

the film http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0402057/.

Buildings, landscapes, costumes, characters, just about everything.

Pretty much all Bethesda added was mages & dragons.

Want some examples? The king is named Hrothgar, his meeting hall looks just like the Whiterun buildings both inside & out, and one of the characters looks strikingly like a Hargraven...

That's because a human being can't create anything original.

You can imagine a Mountain made of Gold, but only because you are familiar with concepts of mountains and gold. You can't invent a new and original plot because it will be based off something you have already seen or read or heard.

Nothing is original, especially that film. Except maybe Laurie Anderson's first album. Very original, but no one actually wanted to listen to it. Not familiar enough. Beowulf (the poem not the film) was a big influence on Tolkien. Should we complain about Lord of the Rings being unoriginal?

There's a difference between finding inspiration in other motifs and blatantly ripping them off. Educate yourself on what those differences are because you clearly have no clue.

Seriously? You are aware that Skyrim is based in Norse history and that Beowulf was Norse too right?

I knew I had seen that sentence structure before! Thanks for clarifying!

EDIT: @ Frisian: I think the Queen might be an Orc. They look strikingly similar.

Any setting with a medieval northern European theme is going to look similar. Both Skyrim and the movie are inspired by the same Scandinavian culture, so naturally there are some similarities.

Why isn't anyone talking about how Mists of Pandaria is ripping off the P.F. Chang's Chinese restaurants?

So, Beowulf was a self-hating Dragonborn Dark Elf werewolf who shunned his destiny and joined the Dark Brotherhood? Dang. You should have mentioned spoilers then, cause I haven't seen that movie yet.

Good so I'm not the only one having no luck finding those... The guy who posted this thread is kind of a fool...

Are you... serious? I mean by your logic, conan ripped off barbarians, and the name of Conan stuff was "CONAN THE BARBARIAN" Please tell me what kind of region we are in in skyrim, and what kind of region they are in in Beowulf. Nordic and Norse. Do you know what people from either of those regions are called? Nords.

Have you ever played the game Super Mario Bros. 2? It was totally a ripoff of Doki Doki Panic.
Have you ever played the game Trials HD? It was totally a ripoff of Excitebike.
Have you ever played the game Fallout: New Vegas? It was totally a ripoff of Fallout 3.
Have you ever played the game Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball? It was totally a ripoff of a dream I had once.

And the list goes on.

Also, I didn't see any thing in Beowulf that may possibly be a Kinetically-Interlinked Nirnian Multi-User Exoform from the ninth era.

Beowulf may have been the main inspiration for Skyrim but Skyrim doesn't rip it off. If it was ripping off Beowulf then it would have the exact same story and characters but with slightly different names. The only similarity is that they both have a Nordic setting!

I saw a history channel show about Vikings, talk about ripping off skyrim. They were even using axes!

I think from that picture they are wearing armor in that film too! Unbelievable plagiarism from Beth, shameful. Invent a new form of body protection or dont put it in at all. Bloody lazy .....

I find this topic to be thrilling and informative. Thank you for making me aware of the similarities regarding two distinct features of the same genre of particulars. This has been a very good read indeed. Thank you for taking the time to write it, I'm sure others will agree.

Skyrim is a total ripoff of Oblivion IMO. The setting is different and it has better graphics but the game play is almost identical.
