Skyrim+Steam = Disgust

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 7:44 am

Dear Bethesda,

I am writing this post to simply inform you of how disappointing getting Skyrim (PC) fro christmas has been for me, I am a very loyal customer and have bought every game you have released since morrowind on the Xbox and at times multiple copies of the same game.

However I am now to 4+ hours installation and updating time for Skyrim and have yet to even open the game, this simply is not good enough I understand that as it is christmas it is a peak time for steam and traffic would be a lot higher than usual, but this does not excuse the fact that alough I have a store bought copy of the game I am still uanble to play it after 4+ hours, there is zero justification for this and I am beyond disapointed.

Additonaly blaming Steam is not an excuse, you chose to release your game through steam your responsible.

Im sorry but isn't there like a 50% sale going on right now with steam AND the fact its one of, if not THE biggest holiday of the year? Servers are probably loaded right now.

I think you have just gotten the [censored] end of the stick, my good sir.

Never, in several years of using it, have i had the slightest problem with Steam. I would go so far as to posit that Steam isn't the problem, and it likely lies with either your Computer, your Router, or your ISP.

Its steam, what do you expect. Its nothing but a crap service,. Ever wonder why there are so many steam users, well you guessed it its because of people like this who buy a game and are force to become a steam user just to play their game. Its total crap how can any one defend it??

Sounds like the OP made the classic mistake of not installing the game from the disc and downloading it instead. Rookie steam user error.

Are you joking, its a toss up with a disk too, put a disk in your drive and you are just as likely to end up DL the game from steam too.

Not when you run the installer from the disc you dont. Ive had steam for nearly a decade, I've never had it install a game from the web when I had a disc.

Someone sounds like they have some Steam related anger issues... You wouldn't by chance be one of those who think Steam watches htem while they sleep would you?

Steam is a great service. The ability to cashe a database of your games which can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection was an innovation, and has only served to facilitate gaming as a whole. I've even had them honor games which i had bought previously to them being on Steam, and can now access games like Desiples II without the need to dig the damnable CD out of storage.

Alas, like everything Internet based, too much activity will slow things down. Guess what, it happens on Forums too. Get used to it or invent something better. Takes a little man to complain about something, takes a big man to find a solution.

Yeah I bought the game in the store, installed it from the disk in a matter of minutes and played. I have never used steam before that game and had no problems with it.

@Yeah whatever--Are you new to the internet? This is not some problem that only steam has encountered on days like this. And its not only one sided either, theres ISP and internet types to consider as well. Coming on here having a tantrum while even knowing the obvious reasons why there's an issue right now is just pointless for the OP.

Hows it going being a hipster? Must be great not taking advantage of user friendly services b/c you had one or two bad experiences.

I bought Skyrim non-digitally. I installed it and started playing in no time.

Steram has great deals, it's one click away, all my games are in one place and I don't have to use disks.

Wait, what was that.....a retort. Well, you see kinds sir....it doesn't matter what your reply is.

What I said were the facts and no matter what your [censored] gripe is, milions of ppl see things the way I do.

Yah thats right keep defending this service you people are forkin your money into. You people dont even own your games and dont forget it.

I can play my games any time any where, with out internet.

Yes, but can you play your game from anywhere, without having to lug around a truck full of CD's?

As for owning the game. We do own it, as a matter of fact. There are legal terms in place which require Steam to distribute hard copies of all games in its database should it cease to render online services.

You are incorrect steam owes you nothing, they cant stut it all down tomorrow and there is nothing you or any one can do about it. They are under no legal obligation to let you play your game, read there terms.

Lets get real you may own 100 crappy steam games at any givin time but you dont play them all ( we both you steamer me non steamer play about the same amout at any givin time.)

Steam's availability is not guaranteed and Valve is under no legal obligation to release an update disabling the authentication system in the event that Steam becomes permanently unavailable.

Enjoy your game you dont really own that you paid 60 bucks for.

One last thing, you may think you can play your 400 dollars worth of steam games any time any where with out lugging around a bunch of disk but Steam can take away your availability to play any time any where. ... and they often do when the servers are loaded like above poster pointed out. Sadly this is just accepted by steam users . When servers are loaded and you cant play. a singer player game .

Actually you can if the servers are loaded, but you really can't download well if the servers are loaded (this is true of ANY online downloading, yeah fact of internet life). Playing the game after its installed is not affected by steams server load.

Which is a violation of international digital consumer protection laws, regardless of what the lisence agreement says.

But, clearly, no amount of reason is going to change your oppinion. I'm sure when delivery companies started deliveirng milk, instead of the Daries doing it themselves, people got pissed off too.

Sigh...this is why games are dumbed down these days. Just do this:

1. Install the game from the disk (do not download it).

2. Register / Login on Steam to activate.

3. Exit Steam and disconnect from the internet.

4. Run Steam again and you are give the option to start in offline mode.

Problem solved.

Not that this helps but i LOVE Steam. One of the perks of being a PC gamer. I've never had a single issue with server speed and my games usually d/l around 2mb.

Awesome that Bethesda forced players to install the client. I'd take a guess at the 4 million that installed Skyrim on their pc, half of those are new to Steam, which surely means more crazy offers for a long time to come.

So much for streamlining. I was happier when it was:

1. Install the game from disk.
2. Launch game.
