Is Skyrim that bad?

Post » Thu Jun 28, 2012 1:41 pm

I just read numerous post by angry gamers who were mad that Skyrim was listed as one of the top 25 best open world games of all time. A few of the criticisms that people kept mentioning was that the game was boring, over hyped and a piece of... well, you get the picture. Normally I wouldn't be suprised to hear one or two people criticize the game, but almost everyone who responed to it was saying something bad about it. I haven't actually played the game myself so, I'm just asking for your opinion about the vanilla game, minus mods of course.

I just read numerous post by angry gamers who were mad Skyrim was listed as one of the top 25 best open world games of all time.

I am astounded an amazed that there are actually 25 open world games. I'm only aware of the TES and Fallout 3 + NV that fit that category.

Can you provide a link. I'd like to see what the other 24 games are.

As far as Skyrim goes, I think it is an utterly amazing and wonderful game. I've been playing pretty much since it's release last November and have not gotten bored. Only in the past few days have I started playing some Oblivion again, in part because of nostalgia.

No, it really isn't. It's just that those who don't like it are very vocal about it.

Opinions vary wildly about Skyrim, but I would recommend playing it so you can form your own opinion.

Also, no game is perfect (I'm sure someone will correct me on this though lol)...

To many people complain about really small stuff in the game and it gets on my nerves. Many people say "I don't like beths. because they don't listen to fans" and that's a load of crap, Beths. listens to fans they just can't put everything one person says into the game and that doesn't make them a bad company. I love Skyrim for what it is and I play on the Xbox so no mods, and I still think it is an amazing game.

It's a good game. It isn't perfect. It was overhyped, though. It really was. There was such a huge build up during the release, in fact. It is a very good game, still. Being hyped tons doesn't make a game bad and most of those gamers who got angry were probably extremely angered by the bugs at release, the fact that they themselves were making the hype bigger(which means they were asking to be disappointed), found the game wasn't for them and were not mature about how to say that, or are part of the side of the Morrowind fanbase no one likes. The one that might make churches for the purpose of worshipping even Morrowind's bugs. Never believe a thing that side says until they get cured of that whole obsession.

Those who are thinking they are on that side, you aren't screaming Dagoth Ur's theme song as annoyingly as the anger pill required side of the Final Fantasy fandom acts towards... Well... That game's sephy guy's theme song.

Yeah, there's a crapload of open world games. Many aren't of the TES style, but they may as well be open world. I'm assuming this list confused the term with sandbox, though. There was an open world spy game on one of the old Atari computers.

Here's the link. I think it's a blog or something. not sure. http://www.gameranx.com/features/id/6335/article/best-open-world-games/ There were a few other games that people felt shouldn't have been on the list but Skyrim stuck out to me.

Definitely not. As others have said, the (very) small group of people who are truly upset with the game are just very vocal. Plenty of us have spent hundreds or thousands of hours playing Skyrim. I doubt anyone would do that in a game they consider bad.

Those people that were mad probably just either loved other games or were the type that hated any new ES games but the first 3.

This pretty much. I personally love skyrim. It would be third on my list besides Morrowind and Fallout 3. Oblivion being at number 4.

It really doesn't matter, people usually hate on the #1 game because they were hoping for THEIR favorite game to be #1

It should be noted that many people on here bashing Skyrim are people who have spent hours upon hours upon hours playing the game.

"I've played the game as a mage, thief, warrior, bunny rabbit and can't get into it"

Well, it seemed worth your time enough to keep trying, eh?

It's a great game. But don't take MY word for it...play it for yourself.

It's not bad really just matter of preference, but yeah I've to agree it's over-hyped.

The MQ storyline is not that epic as shown in the hype neither is the Civil War that they hype so much.

But it is still a good game.

I don't know so much about hype, per se - I saw a lot of trailers and the like, and I knew a long time ago that I simply had to get Skyrim, Arkham City and Mass Effect 3 because I love their predecessors - but I didn't keep up with much publicity stuff about what was going to be in the game.

I will say that it's one of my favorites, and belongs on a fairly short list for all-time favorites. I think it's better - even accounting for improved technology, etc. - than Oblivion by a long shot, just for the awesome aesthetic sense that goes into the game. Sometimes it's fun simply to explore, other times it's just fun to fast-travel right to the objective and start cracking skulls. The feel of the game's melee combat is so much better than Oblivion's that it isn't even funny. I'm about to start getting into mods for the next playthrough, and I never bothered modding Oblivion.

Simply a great game. Yeah, bugs are annoying, and I can agree with some of the complaints, like the loss of spellcrafting, the pointless dullness of marriage, the apparent uselessness of the entire lockpicking tree - but all that said, it's simply a great game.

60% of the games shouldn't have been on the list. Alas, most open world games are less known because many were old games that were extremely experimental. Like that spy game I mentioned. It let you destroy entire buildings(long before any FPS series could even boast about that crap) and despite being well... An 80's or early 90's Atari computer game, it was pretty open ended. I haven't played it, but what I have seen makes it seem pretty cool. The inFAMOUS series and every superhero freeroam game ever made is not open world. It is a lesser form of sandbox in most cases, and this isn't always bad, but it gets very tedious for some. The inFAMOUS series also made svcker Punch kick Sly Cooper out of their interests, so kinda angry about that.

Ultima VII was open world. Just not TES open world. The list mainly had sandbox games, though.

Pros: It's pretty. There is amazing attention to detail in some parts of the game. There is really good writing in parts of the game. There are areas that will take your breath away the first time you visit them (you can tell what they are because special music plays when you enter that area).

Cons: After 6 major patches and 7 months, there are still parts of the game that don't work. There are really big chunks of the game that feels as though there was no thought given as to how they would (or should) fit with the rest. There is really bad writing in parts of the game.

I recommend letting go of any expectations that you have of playing a RPG. Everything is on rails. Pick the right rails and avoid the others and you can have a very enjoyable 200 hours of game play. Try to actually role play, or start off down a path thinking that you'll have choices later on, and you're bound to end up frustrated.

If someone tells you that they love Skyrim or proclaim the Todd Howard is a god, the odds are they are a tweener being exposed to their first Elder Scrolls game. If someone tells you that it svcks, the odds are they were hoping for a real RPG and feel they got shafted. I hope that helps.

If you think about it, GTA IV isn't truly open world. Your locked out of 2/3 of the map in the beginning, where as in most open world games you can do whatever you want right out of the gate. List is bad anyway, no Oblivion or Fallout New Vegas?

I role play in the game, and actually can. Oh my Akatosh. I must be doing daedric magic!
Sarcasm aside, I really do find Skyrim more fun to roleplay in. Not sure why. Call me a moron, mentally handicapped, or say I have no IQ. I can understand why you feel the way you do and am saying that in a non-passive aggressive way. I would have loved for it to have more features that it should have had, but what happens happens.

Most of these people probably bought into the hype, by the way. Or do feel the way you say. Or want to invade Russia while naked. I don't know.

I prefer Saints Row 2 myself.

I'm reading through the site, and much of it and the stuff it links to use a very naughty form of journalism. The kind where they says, "Doctor Oz is really a wizard!" and it turns out, they were using what I dub "Desperate Journalism" to get you to read their article.

This site has a habit of being a hype machine and so does the sites it links to. It is claiming Max Payne 3 is better than the first one. (or second one if you played that one. I can't find the second one.)

Agreed. In spite of Skyrim having certain features removed I can't help getting svcked into the game...roleplaying just "happens". I'm reminded of this fact every time my heart pounds when fighting a difficult enemy, when I wonder whose whispers and muttering is echoing in the distance in a Draugr crypt, and when I just stand there admiring the gorgeous landscapes and listen to the wind howling in the mountains. (ok I might've embarrassed myself somewhat by admitting all that, but felt it had to be said...)

But..invading Russia while naked sounds like a death wish.

I haven't heard about role playing a bunny rabbit, but I have heard about role playing a bear.

Wearing all fur armor and standing in a river and catching salmon all day.

Can GTA let you do that?

Skyrim is awesome!
