Skyrim without fast travel... 002!

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 3:53 pm

I try not to fast travel either. But sometimes it gets too tedious. So, I started my own way of limiting fast travel. When I start a quest, I will not fast travel, but once I finish the quest, I will fast travel to my next location to look for whatever new quest I can find. I've done this mostly with traveling to high hothgar, finding where my next shout is, then jump off the mountain and run to where ever I need to go, find the word, then fast travel back to high hothgar.

I fast travel from Dragonsreach to Whiterun. Don't see what the big deal is. Life is too short to backtrack dozens or even hundreds of times. Let's not, and pretend we did.

When I want to travel and explore, I surely will. And I'm sure I'll be able to carry stuff at the time. Little is more annoying, for me, than being over-encumbered. Worse yet, when there is an item laying before me that I want.

This no fast traveling has definitely added to the Skyrim experience for me. The game is just so scenic and gorgeous. It makes it more challenging too because if I wanna buy potions or cure a disease I usually have to travel to a city.

It was good at low level because random encounters were challenging, now I just can't bear the thought of walking the distance.

I picked up Skyrim again after a two-week break, and decided to give the "RP, no fast-travel, no skill-grinding" thing a shot on a new playthrough.

I can no longer commit to using fast-travel, even if I want to end the quest quickly. Not even on my first character. The most I'll do is use the cariages in the holds.

I walk everywhere. I always have in BGS games. I don't even run unless I'm trying to avoid being someone's dinner. I don't think you realize how much effort goes into making these games unless you take time to notice the details.

I am still at it and to be honest I am enjoying the game more than I thought would be possible. You get used to it.

So how do you do say a DB mission that sends you to the Easternmost point on the map, you'll be there for five seconds then get called straight back to where you came from, if you honestly play like that then walking that distance would take a good few hours. How many missions have you completed since Nov?, like 6?.

I did start off just exploring by running everywhere but with all the back and forth missions it quickly stopped being feasible, I was spending the whole afternoon on the game and only completing one or two missions. I have multiple characters and playing like that it would take me years to finish all the quest lines, I have so many other top rated games still to play that I really don't want to be stuck on the same game for years because of some artificial limit I've put on how I play it.

From the Bridge at Ivarstead to the chest at the entrance to High Hrothgar just took me 5 minutes and 1 second walking and running and not stopping to get eaten, seriously what is all the fuss about that?

There isn't any, that's an easy journey.

We are talking about trips that start you at one side of the map, take you to the other side then have you trekking all the way back to where you started. Those are the journeys that encourage people to fast travel.

I wasn't talking directly to you or even indirectly Cloysterpete. I was making a reference to having seen so many others so many times complain about this individual journey. Your point is well taken and valid so as and when I have to do what you describe I will make a point of documenting it! :)

i have a recall spot. i drop something bulky, like a pot or a kettle in a location. that's my mark. i'm only allowed to fast travel to that spot. and i call it recalling :)

but other than that i walk (well, sneak) everywhere

Is Skyrim the 1st TES game to mark dungeons as 'cleared'-Without fast travelling do you bypass them,or do you travel like in a search pattern? By using 'cleared' aren`t the programmers suggesting that people fast travel?Aren`t they saying that there`s no point in going by them again?

Well, typically I have more than one quest going at the same time, so there's usually more than one objective to meet in an area. Also, I'm not trying to burn through the quests. I don't mind if it takes me a whole session, or even two, to walk from one end of the map to the other. I have various encounters along the way, typically stop in one or two dungeons or other locations that I want to explore, etc. I just happen to enjoy walking and taking in the sights and use the time to think about my character's objectives. And I will occasionally use the carriages if I think it fits my RP better. I've used them about seven or eight times. That's usually only when it seems like the quest is urgent and my character would want to get there as fast as possible.

Of course, I'm not saying anyone else has to enjoy playing this way. If you'd rather be doing other things, by all means don't let other people hold you back.

My main character had over three dozen completed quests last time I checked + countless side quests. It really doesn't take as long as people think, since you're rarely doing only one quest at a time. I usually advance/complete 2-4 quests in each location before moving on.

I did not fast travel until I had discovered every location on the map... and yes I do mean every one. It took me right at 225 hours of play, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

There are times when I need to go to the college so I'll just FT. I mean, who wants to walk in snow for 20 minutes besides the fact that there isn't much happening in that region with settlements or camps.

I don't think there is a right way or wrong way to play, nor a 'better than' way that many people like to imply. I simply did every questline on PS3 through fast travel so I could see the story, and now on PC I don't have to fast travel because I am no longer in a hurry. I am now role playing the quests the way I want and it feels pretty good to get lost in the fantasy.

I recently walked from Markarth to Riften, just to see how long it would take. I stayed in 3rd person to keep it to an actual walk. I had a few combat encounters, including one dragon. In the game it took about 28 hours. In real time, just under 2 hours. No, I don't know if I would do it again. I wouldn't have with that character, who usually FT-ed everywhere. I probably would with a high-RP character. Riften to Markarth and back could be its own little epic journey that'll have songs written about it.

I usually don't fast travel.

But of late I've found that there is little to no point making the trek. There is nothing to see on the way most of the time and the half a dozen wolves that attack me only to be pimp slapped across the map is more annoying then anything.
