sneaking around like the sneak you are

Post » Sun May 01, 2011 7:44 am

in fallout 3 the sneak skill was completely useless...i have no idea what they were doing with it. if u can successfully sneak close enough u might get 1 shot in before you get spotted and even at 100 sneak, you still can never sneak right up to the enemy.

anyone know if they will change the sneak skill at all? i wouldn't mind if it was completely removed, but i already saw its still in. fallout just doesnt seem like the game to sneak around in

I think you're confusing sneaking with turning invisible.
Ofcourse you're going to draw attention when you shoot a gun.

sneaking is moving around silently, not turning invisible. That's what stealthboys are for

ahhh, you're Doin' it wrong, Sneak was crazy awesome. Pickpocketing frag nades into people's pockets was awesome, and you need the perk Silent running FOR SURE, and stuff like that, without silent running it's like you have bells on or something.

Rather than use sneak to get right up close, I'd use it to get to the most opportune spot for me to start a fight (things to hide behind to dodge shots, or a good sniping position etc.).

When you sneak you actually have to step quietly and slowly. I think it worked quiet well.

I actually thought Sneak was really powerful in Fallout 3. It was a great way to set up mines and such before an encounter, and Sneak criticals were pretty devastating. In fact, Fallout 3 was the first Fallout game I used Sneak very much in...I didn't find it as useful in FO1/2.

I thought sneak was very useful. Apart from sneaking around, I used it to RPP peoples outfits, since I really dont relish the thought of KILLING an NPC just for their clothes (Like one of those spiffy Tuxedos those White Glove chaps have on, and those masks :D)

Sneak is hard?

100 Sneak, attainable by level 10, then the Chinese Stealth Suit, then dump a few points in Small Guns and REpair(75 works), then grab you a silenced weapon. The game then becomes a point-and-click adventure game not at all unlike the originals! No skill involved on your part, just click on your opponent and see his head explode.

I used sneak constantly. Come across a raider camp, sneak into position, let forth the dogs of war (and I'm not talking about dogmeat). Combined with stealthboys and that is pretty much how I played Fallout 3. If I couldn't sneak in, then I'd long-range with rockets or fatmen.

eh..ive tried all this stuff before, i replayed the game many times with many different builds....maybe sneaking is fine, but compared to the other skills...it aint nothing

and no im not confusing sneaking with turning invisible. im talking about sneaking and yes i understand how it works, doesnt change a damn thing

i love sneaking in games like oblivion and stuff, but this just isnt my kind of game to be sneaking around, whatever.

oh and @Testecul i never said it was hard i just said it was useless and lame

Interesting. I found the ability to one-shot just about any enemy with impunity to be pretty powerful...almost to the point of being too powerful, but everybody has a right to their perspective.

I didn't find the sneak in Fallout 3 as effective as it could have been. I had sneak at 100, silent perk, and still as I tried to hide and get close, I was spotted very easily. And if I hung out for a bit, and nobody found me, a couple silent steps later, it was a caution again. Like nothing else makes noise. One little rustle and the group of enemies know it wasn't one of them, that they would start looking for me. "Come out, come out, wherever you are!" How do they know it wasn't just the wind? Or their buddy? Must have very high perception or something.

I pretty well ended up using sneak as a secondary perception, if I didn't see the enemy first, I knew they were near when I got a caution.

@monster528- I think we would have to see how exactly you are sneaking in order to get an idea of why it seems to be, in your words "useless and lame"

Personally I found it amazingly effective (sneak playthroughs were my favorites :)) and by reading these other posts it seems to have worked well for them to.
I think you might be doing something slightly different, what enemy, what perks did you have, what weapons and armor were you wearing, etc.
You can look up the sneak skill and check all the factors that associate with it in FO3 to see if there was something there that you may have missed to make the skill seem "useless and lame"

The vast majority of characters I had were sneakbased ones and they were definatly the more powerful, so if anyting I believe sneak crits should be nerfed slightly. By level 20 I one shotted most things except behemoths.

I had to laugh because when you said you think it should be nerfed slightly I already spotted 2 extra perks in the game making it more powerful

I used sneak a lot on my first play through. I played a lot of quests out of order so sneaking was my best option. Later Fawkes made it impossible unless I parked him somewhere first.

Me: "ok I'm going to sneak around behind........"

Fawkes: "RAAAAAAAGH HA HA HA" *whips out Gatling laser"

Me: "Dammit Fawkes"

Seriously, it was like trying to hunt with a tone deaf rock band.

Fawks is the best companion for a sneak character in FO3. All the agro goes to him and the enemies don't see you in many cases until you pull the trigger. With the perforator it was like shooting fish in a barrel.

Back on topic. Sneak was the most powerful skill in FO3. With 100 sneak and some dark shadows raiders, super mutants and enclave can walk right past or even bump into your character if you stay still and never see you. Stealthboys and CSA wasn't even required. It's one of those skills I expect to be nerfed hardcoe in New Vegas. If not NV won't be all that much harder than FO3 was.

Head be gone brought to you by the sneak skill. It may not be your style but I assure you it is neither useless nor lame.

Useless? With 100 sneak I could reverse pick-pocket and grenade in to the pants of every raider in Evergreen Mills.
