Some Breathtaking Screenshots

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 12:27 pm

I just found this in them interwebs. It's a subreddit dedicated to artsy screenshots taken from Skyrim.

www.reddit.com/r/Skyrimporm/

The art department at Bethesda deserves three loves. ;)

Judging by part of the link saying "Skyrimporm" I'm pretty sure that porm IS a big no no in the forums. RIP friend.

He's done nothing wrong, the link doesn't contain what I think you think it does. It's simply very pretty screenshots.

For the same reason that carporm or techporm are what they are - pictures of pretty cars or groovy phones or whatever.

It's a different application of the word.

And this is why more people should utilize things like bitly.

I love the site but I will say that it's pretty dumb for them to call it Skyrim porm because that's the first time I've ever heard the word used that way. I know we all have to learn some way, but I'd bet they lost many many potential fans when they saw the title and thought "Ugh, no thanks".

A little subtitle on the page like "It's not what it looks like, honest!" would be enough to clue people in.

Anyway, as a console user who takes (surprisingly sharp) photos by pointing his camera phone at his telly, this is truly a gift from the Divines. The beauty of Skyrim is something which is lost on those among us who see the physical beauty as 'pretty graphics' or 'high end visuals' and assert that none of this is truly important. I began my gaming in the 8-bit 80s so I fully understand that graphics are not the be all, end all (see my teenage rants from the 32/64 bit era) but when you can create living worlds like this you can create beauty, and that to me is one of the greatest things a human being can do. No amount of "I work for Belathor.." can take that away.

From the TVTropes page for http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Sceneryporm:

Scenery porm is the emphasis on luscious backgrounds with great detail, lovely lighting or both. It means that the makers put in extra effort for something that might not have direct influence on the http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Plot. Of course, there are extra points to be earned when the scenery actually enhances the http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Plot in some sort of symbolic fashion.

edit: although, yes.... given some of the mods out there, the general title "Skyrim porm" doesn't necessarily make one think Scenery porm.

There are so many nudity mods for Beth's games that it would be very easy to misunderstand a link like that one.

I wouldn't have either... nobody wants viruses or trojan horses on their PC/laptop. One sure way to get them is to click on a malicious link that takes you to a porm site. You can't bust the guy's balls for being cautious.

Some of those images are so amazing I'm itching to flee from work and to start a new playthrough right away.

I wish I had the mental strength to avoid fast traveling this time around and appreciate all the detail that's put into the world.

In my case, I'm at work...so the last thing I need to do is click on a link with "porm" in the URL...

Holy blankety blank blank!
Those are gorgeous shots. I may have to buy a PC just to play with scenery like that.

Most of those are the result of "ENB"-type post-processing mods. The one I use is http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=4577. Some more nice pics in the image section on that page....

What I'm seeing mostly is average images, and average images using ENB as a massive crutch.

Not to mention surfing porm sites at work is a great way to get fired from your job.

Oh, don't even get me started with those mods. I know of one in particular that doesn't care about the context of threads, and simply moderates on a basis of knee-jerk reaction...

As for the scenery, I'm gonna agree, Skyrim is absolutely beautiful. The first time I saw an Aurora at night in this game I was just breathtaken.

I wish we could get a screenshot feature for the PS3, perhaps an option in the system menu. Those thumbnails on my save files ... some of those would have been amazing screenshots.

One time, I actually saw the mysterious third moon in the sky. Three eclipsed moons in a row with an orange aurora borealis behind them, and no way to preserve the sight. (I was confused for months after that why I had suddenly seen a 3rd moon until I found a lore article about the Khajit that mentioned the apocryphal third moon that was said to sometimes appear during special lunar alignments.)
