Sorry Bethesda - but Forbes has a pretty good article about

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 4:59 pm

I don't care what other people think, it is a console defining game for me. Computers are for MMO's and RTS.

360 - Skyrim, FIFA multiplayer
Xbox - Halo 2 Mulitplayer
64 - Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye
SNES - pick a Square game

What are computers for? I'm not following you. You're also very narrow-minded in your definitions

Games, more than movies, are biased based on people's preferences because of the level of involvement of the user. If you're style of games, and how you critique them, jives with the reviewer on many different types of games, then you can follow their recommendations wholeheartedly.

This reminds me of the review IGN did of the original Halo. They got absolutely blasted when they gave Halo an 8 out of 10 which was far lower than the industry average, which was about a 9.5 out of 10. That reviewer focused heavily on the single player aspects of the game commenting on things such as repetitive level design and a B-movie script. Now, if you play Halo for multiplayer, you'd be inclined to give the game a higher score, but if you play more single player, you'd probably agree with the review. Now, let's not talk too much of your opinion on Halo in this forum because I'm just trying to make a point.

Now with Skyrim, if you focused solely getting a riveting story and complex combat mechanics, then you'll likely side with the reviewer. Now if you're concentrating more on the RPG aspects and immersion, then you'll likely give it game of the year.

My point of this whole rant is that it really is pointless to get worked up over game reviews, regardless if it's from Forbes or IGN.

I still have Deus Ex sitting on the shelf.. Played a little, but will get around to it later. Liked the first one a lot.

That said, while I kind of like those type of games, I have a hard time believing it'd ever be game of the year for me -- For one simple fact. I don't care fo guns/gunplay too much. I'm a little bored with the idea. I play them, but it's not exactly... umm.. conducive to my "fantasies" or whatnot. Out of 2011 releases, I'm fairly sure that I would rank Dragon Age 2 at least in top 5. Just because I'm a sword and fantasy nut. After that, I rank racing games pretty highly too.

And my point is, everyone's got their own little thing. It doesn't matter what some mag says is game of the year. That's silly. How do I even know what that guy even likes to agree with him?

How can I get more immersed in Skyrim when candles burn in places that haven't been touched in centuries? Or how I can crouch right in front of a guard and keep bumping him and not be detected? And like the points he made with becoming a guild leader when everyone in the guild has known you less than a week.

There's soooo many things that breaks TES lore in Skyrim. But I still play and like the game. Just not overly impressed nor do I feel like it ever reached or will reach its potential. Just seems like Beth focused too much on how pretty things are, and spent too much time on technology rather than actual storyline and lore. Sad.

No one seems to recognize what you’ve done to save the world ...

You see, this is what Obsidian got right with New Vegas. If you can't make the game "feel" right - if there's really NO change in the world after you've made some huge accomplishments by the end of the main quest and done things that WOULD change the world or the world's attitude towards you... then end the [censored] game.

He's absolutely right about the guild questlines, I've always thought that about Elder Scrolls games. It's always YOU that's saving the guild, it's never the guild as a whole that's working together. And the way you ALWAYS end up advancing to the highest rank is also silly, especially since they did away with requirements (being the head of a mages guild when you can't cast spells for example).

Meh, another dumb article, all you have to do on this forum is link what some silly website has to say, and boom you get a hundred responses.

None of it matters, no one's opinion is worthwhile except your own. It just get's old after a while, these topics, and instead of responding, by taking sides and what have you. It just doesn't matter.

If you enjoy it, great, you found what your looking for!
If not, well don't fret! There is a whole world of games out there for you!

Just leave it at that...

I wonder if some people here seek consensus opinions and "wider" objectivity on everything.

"Hey guys, what's the standard way to wipe your butt? Wadding or folding? ... Oh, it's folding then? I always wadded. I guess I'll change my habit to be like you then."

"Hey guys, I like apple pie. What's better.. apple pie or peach cobbler? Oh peach cobbler? I guess I should agree. Damn you apple pie!"

Does sneaking become that ridiculous if you don't put any perks into it? I ask because I plan to play a totally stealth based character next but that kind of absurdity would ruin it for me.

My current character uses stealth as well but I havn't put any perks in it and it seems about right. I get spotted quite easily when they get close and I can't sneak in daylight.

I'm not saying I think "just don't do that then" is an excuse for them to put a game breaking mechanic in the game. I'd much rather they fixed it themselves, but since they're not likely to do that I'll have to know how to miminise the sillyness myself.

Gee, thanks. Now butt wiping and peach cobbler will forever be associated in my mind.

Yeah, I did write a bunch of gibberish. I believe Skyrim is a milestone game for the 360 (console generation). Somehow in my head I had a comparison between Oblivion ---> Skyrim and Mario 64 ----> Ocarina of Time but I didn't know how to word it. The PC comment was unnecessary.... I guess it was a preemptive strike for when thy PC people inevitably complain about how Skyrim was built on the LCD platform.

"with my ultimate Game of the Year being Deus Ex: Human Revolution"

This is when I stopped reading.

Also, Portal 2 shouldn't be on the list. Great game, but not much different than its predecessor. It's more of a game to cash in on the original's fame, more than an actual successor to it. Same with pretty much everyone else's "top picks", including Deus Ex, Uncharted 3, Saints Row, among others. Batman is the only other qualifier besides Skyrim because it gave a much needed update (That being an open world).

Also, I think Skyrim watered itself down so it could immerse you more. Swinging your sword in the sky 50 times at an enemy and not connecting just because of your stats doesn't really svck you into a game so much.

By my reckoning, any game that I play the most in one year and enjoy the most in one year is my game of the year. Forbes may argue that other games have better polish, but polish is a single aspect of a videogame. You can have a tightly polished gem novelty game, which entertains for a single day, like Portal 2, but that's not GOTY material because it's not enough of a well rounded game to deserve GOTY. Games are made of many components, if you neglect important components such as value for money, you cannot hope for a GOTY award. But then again this is Forbes right? What do they care about how good value a game is, they can just go around buying all sorts of games most of us would consider rentals.
