Sound Volume Issues Thread #2

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 8:41 pm

I had audio really low also if I set at maximum in option menu.
So I realize to go in SkyrimPrefs.ini (in Documents/My Games/Skyrim) and have changed the following line:
fAudioMasterVolume=
For me, the previous value was 1.0000 so I raise it to 3.0000, but also 2.0000 work fine.
So, now I have
fAudioMasterVolume=3.0000

I hope can help anyone.

ok
For me work really good.
I think that maybe some people make a simple error, like I did.
There are 4 zero after the point and not 3.
It's 3.0000 and not 3.000

That doesn't solve the problem for me (P6T).
I'll try with the last nvidia drivers.

Tried to make an easily searchable Topic Title.

Ok I have the game installed via Steam on my PC running 32 bit Windows XP and the game runs great, except for one problem.

The game is just too dang quiet!

The differences between sounds in the game is fine, closer things are louder than further things and such. But I have every setting I can possibly find turned to max and the sound is still about 25% of the rest of my applications at medium settings.

What I've tried:

  • I've changed the preferences.ini files in Steam to turn the masteraudio to 4.00 from 1.00, but that didn't work
  • I've changed my Device Output audio quality testing every setting. e.g. sampling rate/bit rate
  • I've configured my speakers for stereo/ 4.1/5.1 settings
  • I've tried two different sound cards
  • I've updated all my drivers and windows xp
  • I've REINSTALLED THE WHOLE GAME!
  • I've searched for nearly 4 hours on google, steam forums, skyrim forums, etc. for a solution

I know someone out there must be running the game on windows XP and having similar issues, it's just a matter of hoping they will post their fixes.

The only option left that I know of (and the one that I ended up having to use) is to enable Loudness Equalization on the Enhancements tab.

My sound card doesn't have a loudness Equalization setting manager and I'm running Windows XP which doesn't have that option either.

Hi there,

I don't know what sound card you're using but I had very low sound using my XFI-Extreme Gamer card. What solved the issue for me was to enable Smart Volume Management(SVM) in the sound cards console. I think all the sound is driven with mp3 files and SVM boosted and smoothed out the sound where ever it was needed.

If you have a similar setting in your sound card then it may help you out?

Good luck with it though.

Impossible to boost Sound Volume in Game even with G19 Keyboard.

I posted a thread about this same bug. I noticed that at certain points in the game, suddenly my center channel audio drops out and only the left and right channels work, which is strange since I don't have any surround sound set up. Just two speakers and a sub. This doesn't happen in any other game or audio application. Just skyrim. In order to hear what people are saying I have to turn my character to the left or right, put the speaking person at my side and suddenly I can hear them talk. Weirdness.

So I switched to playing with a head set, getting the audio out of a my headphones only and strangely enough that fixed it. But what I realized is that certain environments in the game have an echo effect to the sounds. Like temples and halls. When you talk to characters their voices are all echoey. In my two-speaker set up, the center channel drops out in these locations and only while playing skyrim. It's an audio bug for echoey locations.

The work around until Beth fixes it? Use a head set? It worked for me. Not sure why it works with headphones but not with speakers. I assume it's a software glitch. Beth is accessing the direct sound wrong somehow maybe, but only in locations with high echo.

Look into it, Beth.

This is well known for us on the forums, but apparently not for Bethesda. The PC version got VERY low sound for a lot of computers. Many people are forced to raise their volume to the max or make put loudness equalization on their speaker settings in order to hear things in the game.

This is such a major, general issue that as far as I know most PC players experience. As mentioned above there are workarounds, but it becomes very tedious to constantly change the volume of your computer before starting the game, and then changing it back when closing the game. If we're going to play Skyrim for a long time, it will become even more tedious.

This is why I made this thread. Bethesda are you aware of this? Why hasn't this been fixed? It doesn't sound like that hard thing to do and that much to ask for... to simply have a normal game volume, not 500% lower than everything else on your computer.

Betheda, FIX THE LOW SOUND.

I have Realtek HD too and find the voices are too quiet even at max.
I have no problem with voices, lol, but all other sounds are really quiet... Except for spell (effect) sounds. The sound if casting a spell is 5x higher than everything else.

Loudness equalization is what works best for me (it also makes beautiful water, river, wind sounds that are otherwise quiet more audibile), but it's tedious to set it each time I play the game.

Same issue here. External Creative HD soundcard.

The game's audio is way more quiet than any other sound in e.g. youtube vids, music, or even window's 'bings & boops'.

To those experiencing this problem, what speaker configuration are you using (Headphones, 2.0, 2.1, 3.1, 4.0, 4.1, 5.1, etc.) and how is it attached (direct anolog from sound card, USB, S/PDIF to receiver, HDMI to receiver, etc.)

Not any better on xbox, at least not on my TV. I gotta either turn my side to the person to hear them or i miss what there saying. I had to put subtitles on so i know whats up

This guy right here without a question has his Xbox set to a surround sound setup but does not actually have a working center channel. If voices are low when looking straight at someone and normal when off to the side, that is guaranteed to be the answer. I suspect others may have a similar problem.

I'm using a 5.1 desktop speaker system connected via anolog to my onboard sound card and everything is fine. The default audio balance is a little bit off for my tastes, but I was able to get it exactly where I'd want it with minor adjustments in the audio menu.

Stereo. I tried other settings but didnt help. Not sure what you mean with how is attached. I think I got anolog, front speakers out.

I get very low volumes with voices, and other weird voice glitches and bugs depending on how far away the NPCs that are talking are from me. The volumes of the voices are so low that I have set the voices at max with all other volumes at about 5-10% and I have to max my computers sound output to full, and my stereo receiver to almost max volume.

This is definitely an issue. If you go master volume 4.0 it makes all the sounds come out the same so even if I have sounds effects turned down and voice turned up, they sound really audible compared to me sheathing my warhammer or sword. Not sure if going back to 1.0 master audio will do anything. It's been an issue since day 1.

Neither myself nor any of my many friends currently playing Skyrim (on a variety of different [desktop] PC builds) have ever experienced this problem. That leads me to believe that the problem is a specific hardware/software issue for individual's computers, perhaps manufacturer specific, soundcard specific or laptop related? I know that in the past Beth games have had issues with a variety of codecs so if everyone having the problem were to include their DxDiag we could possibly come up with some common denominators (don't forget to add

immediately before your DxDiag and
immediately after.

We can't really expect Beth to be able to correct hardware issues, that would be like asking a publisher to reprint books because some people's eyeglass prescriptions don't work well!

Edit: Wow that certainly didn't work very well! just add spoiler in brackets before and /spoiler in brackets after.

I have a rather low volume in Skyrim but usually my windows main volume is set around 20%. I just increased it to ~60% and the sound is fine. Just have to remember to turn it down before watching any videos on websites. ;)
Sound quality is ok. No problems with either music or voices.

I'm using an old Creative Audigy 2 sound-card, and Windows default audio format is set to 16bit, 48kHz (DVD Quality). Game runs fine with that.
I also have a Realtek HD Audio chip on the mainboard but hardly ever use it. Haven't tried how that sounds with Skyrim.

I don't have the issue but I've witnessed it with a PC of a friend of mine. Disabling EAX from the soundcard control panel helped quite a bit. Doesn't look like a volume issue to me, it's more like a spatial sound issue, i.e. every sound which is supposed to come from a source far from the player is heavily softened. You can tell that the sound volume is pretty normal when you get hit, your grunts and moans are at a *very* high volume compared to the other sounds.

For the record I haven't had this issue. Playing on Windows 7 Pro x64 with a Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer sound card. My audio output is set to 5.1 surround via the anolog jacks, but I'm not having the issue when I use my headphones either.

How to put this ....

A thread like this ..even with a poll is not really helping the DEV's. If everyone would Post there specs, and what they have tried that would help them. What setting there sound is set to . This might help.

I have great sound. while in the game i smile because i have to turn and face people (like in real life) to hear them better, as their voice moves from ear to ear. Ambient sounds in dungeons are great. I get Echo . I Really like the sound in this title.

So my specs.

Asus Zonar DX2 (Using the Original 2 year old drivers) Because the WHQL certified latest driver wont let my computer Sleep. :snoring:
Connected to Logitech Z-5500 (1000 watt peak) 500 watt RMS. 6 channel Direct connection. (optical is going to TV).
Sound setting in control for Speakers was (Lowered) to 44 k (cause the Game needed this) BUT going to try the new 1.3 patch and 96000.
Using 5.1 ( I hear sounds behind me and all around)

The sound is equal to what ever I have running...IE: if I load up an internet Radio station,or Winamp and adjust to good listening level , then start the game the sounds are equal.

So just posting ..I have low sound ...and not giving a DX report or any info on your system will not help get this fixed.

Edit: yes all 5.1 channels are working. even my Sub...

Skyrim's volume is low in general, even with in-game volume options maxed. I've had this issue since launch. I'm on Windows XP SP3. I have a Realtek sound card, and I normally have my speaker configuration set to headphones, with my headphones plugged in on the front. My Master volume and Wave volume are both set to about 50%. This setup works perfectly for most other things.

But Skyrim is too quiet, even with Master and Wave maxed. I can "fix" it by setting my speaker configuration to 5.1 surround sound. Without changing any other settings, this makes it sound louder. But it still sounds a bit off.

Here's my DxDiag if it helps.

If you are experiencing low volume and you're listening to stereo speaker setup or headphones use the following settings as it seems Bethesda is not supporting stereo channel mixing correctly and it's NOT a specific hardware related issue:

---------------------------------------------

Realtek HD onboard interface:

You plug the speakers or headphones to the "black" (if using speakers) or "green" headphone jack as usual and choose the appropriate speaker config you have in the plugged in device config list. Then set the speaker config in the Realtek HD audio manager to 5.1 speakers and enable both the "Full-range Speakers" settings; "Front left and right" and "Surround speakers". Now verify that you get sound out of all channels played in the "auto-test". You should be able to get a sound from all channels except the subwoofer with that config.

Other soundcards:

If you're not using Realtek HD onboard sound you can probably still find the same configuration in the soundcard drivers somewhere (NOTE: X-Fi users NEED to go via windows control panel as the driver interface speaker config and windows speaker config AREN'T the same and not linked to each other) but you can of course also just adjust it through windows control panel like this too:

Step1: http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/5456/speakerconfig1.png
Step2: http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/3153/speakerconfig2.png
Step3: http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/792/speakerconfig3.png
Step4: http://img804.imageshack.us/img804/228/speakerconfig4.png

--------------------------------------------

Also using 24 bit / 44100 Hz bit depth / sample rate playback results in slightly higher output volume and best possible quality for this game. On Windows Vista/7 you can choose this in the speaker properties and "Advanced" tab.

Seems like Bethesda needs to address stereo channel mixing of this game, above config works wonderfully for me though both delivering normal volume levels as well as very nice sound quality and positioning even as a headphone user.

*raises hand*

Constant low volume here. It's like Skyrim is sitting with its bum on the mute button--the Bethesda logo sound is at what should be a normal audio level for my system, and then the overall volume drops by 50%. At least. Volume sliders are all cranked up to max in game, and the first time I played I could literally only hear every third word of the dialogue, and nothing else. And that's only if I strained my ears.

What's fixed it for me, in bandaid fashion, is toggling Loudness Equalization on every time I want to play the game.

I'm 100% convinced this an issue with Skyrim, not my sound set-up. I currently do a lot of transcription for a living. That means I need to have good quality, high volume sound on both my headphones and my speakers--so I can hear the audio I'm transcribing and not make errors. So...please trust me when I say that I know my sound settings. They're meant to be audible no matter what.

Everything else on my system: system sounds, IM programs, iTunes, other games are all fine without needing to make adjustments. Heck, with most games I usually have to turn the volume down to keep them from hurting my ears. Skyrim is the polar opposite, even when running concurrently with, say, iTunes--iTunes will absolutely drown Skyrim out if I don't have Loudness Equalization on.

I have Realtek HD onboard sound through my motherboard (Asus P5Q Pro). Headphones are a Sony dynamic stereo set, model number MDR-V150. Speaker config is set to stereo, 2 channel, 24 bit, 96000 Hz. Windows 7 x64 Professional, if OS should matter at all.
