Sovngarde- Nords Only?

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 7:37 am

Funny that when I killed Alduin in Svongarde as a Bosmer Tsun said he would see me again at the end of my days then.

Well, whan you're a Bosmer you are by chance also one of the greatest heroes of Nord legend. I think they do an exception in your case.
But I've only seen Nords and Nedes there, so I think there's something to it.

Nordic God "Shor"? damn, Sovngarde seems to be even more of a Valhalla rip off then it did before i heard that.... "Shor"...?

Well seeing as the Nords are obviously heavily based on the Viking era Norse, it's not that surprising that they have a Valhall...

Shor never made me think of Thor either to be honest, he has nothing in common with him other than a similar name. He is more like Odin in the sense that Sovngarde is his hall I guess.

If it was, then only one race could complete the MQ in this game.

Yes, but the setup presented in Skyrim is by no means "Normal." Traditionally, people Nords get to Sovngarde by death in battle. The Dovahkiin gets in via Alduin's Portal, without dying.

I'm asking if this is specifically a Nord-only afterlife (non-Nords need not apply) or just an overwhelmingly Nord afterlife (anyone can go, but most non-Nords simply lack the knowledge/beleif that Sovngarde is real, so they don't find it post-death.)

Went through some of Tsun's Dialogue. Not sure if we can count him as the spoeksperson for Shor, but he does seem to indicate option #2 without counting his last bit of dialogue to the player.

Spoiler

"The Whalebone Bridge he [Shor] bade me guard and winnow all those souls whose heroic end sent them here, to Shor's lofty hall where welcome, well-earned, awaits those I judge fit to join that fellowship of honor."

"Living or dead, by decree of Shor, none may pass this perilous bridge 'til I judge them worthy by the warrior's test."

Note that he doesn't have any race-specific dialogue, so it indicates that he'll let anyone into Sovngarde who can beat him in combat. This doesn't mean there's not some kind of filter that prevents non-Nord souls from reaching the foothills of Sovngarde, just that he doesn't consider race as a factor for entrance.

There for wiping the complimentary mint on your pillow of your face cos's you drank to much of the complimentary beer and didn't know it was there until you woke up.

I dunno if I'd want to go to an afterlife that allowed hangovers.

I remember they told me they look forward to seeing me back in sovngarde after I finish my life. Since they didnt mention they were giving me special treatment (me not being nord), I took it to mean that any race can get to sovngarde if they live right.

Yeah, but that's like saying a Christian can get to Nirvana. Maybe one or two could, if it even occurred to them.

I'd prefer an afterlife with hangovers than one that didn't have booze

Could really argue both ways with this.

-Lorewise any race could have been the reincarnation of Nerevar so race clearly doesn’t matter for the soul.

-That said Shezzarine is historically portrayed as an uber elf killing man in all known incarnations, so it seems that race does matter to Shor.

-The only reason Lorkhan/Shor supports men over mer is because men are his greatest worshipers and mer are his greatest enemy. Thus it is religion that is the deciding factor NOT race, so there is no reason why an elf that embodies Lorkhan can’t go to the afterlife plane of his aspect.

In my humble opinion:
I would say that any race can go to any afterlife plane. Even a Dunmer can have a Nords heart after all.

Nirvana isn't a place...it's a state of existance, or a state of soul, depending on what teachings you read.

Seems to answer my question, lol.

Only reason I asked was because I'm struggling a bit with a playstyle that can match up with gameplay aspects. Thanks for the answer, though- I think I have it now.

*briefly casts Summon Zombie on the thread*

Not sure if anyone will read this, but I ran accross a Transcript called Sovngarde: a Reexamination, and it pretty much says that Nords only go to Sovngarde.

Sovngarde, Shor told him, can be entered by any Nord who dies valiantly in honorable combat.

This pretty much cinces it, unless Rolf or whoever wrote the book mistook "anyone" for "Nord." And before you say anything- if he really wanted everyone to go to Sovngarde, why would he only say "any Nord" instead of "anyone"?
