Sovngarde- Nords Only?

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 8:22 am

Aside from the hint at the end of the game about the PC going to Sovngarde one last time, is there anything in the lore about this?

Specifically, is Sovngarde closed off to non-Nords or is it just a case of "Well, we'll accept anyone who can prove themselves, it's just that Nords tend to be the people who know about it." Or is the lore just "This is what Nords belive"?

Yes. Nords only. It happens to be a place of afterlife created by or for the Nordic God Shor.

Nirn is the Gray Maybe, the place of possibilities, and as such, I'm sure there are non Nords in Sovngarde whom have been granted this honor, much like cases of vampires being cured of their affliction. Specifically, I've never heard of any particular case, but rest assured, there's someone up there that is not a Nord.

It happens to be a glorified version of hell. Shor as we know it, is a god of the underworld. He is Hades (in Greek Mythlogy Term) of TES world.

Isn't Sovngarde a plain within Atherius reserved for the Nords?

The brave and honourble that fell in combat would be hand picked by Odins warrior angels the valkyres, and be brought to Odins hall of Valhalla were they would feast and drink alongside Odin himself until the time of Ragnarok, when the the mortal men (einhjar) would fight alongside the gods in the battle that ended the world.

thats what i remember of the legend atleast.

Lol. As a non-Nord I don`t care. Just as I don`t care about a friend whose religion is completely different to mine and so he`ll end up in a different `Heaven` to me in the afterlife.

I`m not like, `oh, wish I could go to his heaven.`

Even if his heaven features complimentary lemon-scented moist towelettes?

It's for good Nords. Bad Nords get sent to Winterhold.

It's not reserved for Nords, it's just that only Nords believe in it, and only Nords want to go there. So only Nords get in.

Shor is a dead god, so it's Nordic belief that creates it in the first place.

You're telling me? When I saw the guy guarding the entrance I was like "Wassup Heimdall?" And The Whalebone Bridge? More like the Rainbow Bridge buddy. I still really liked it though, probably my favorite place in the game.

He is also called Lorkhan by Elves and Shezarr by Imperials. Those are more original names.

You though of him as Heimdal? Hmm, didn't remind me at all, though he serves almost the same purpose when I think of it.
Sovngarde's almost as close you get to Valhall (the Norse name, not that Valhalla bullcrap) you get.
That would be the realm of warriors of valor and a sort of "heaven", the hell variant would be the world of Hel ruled by Hel, who is sister to Fenris, Midgardsormen and Sleipnir, and the daughter of Loke.
Gotta love Norse Mythology. :P

Why would those be more original names? Lorkhan and Shor are both names that predate history. Shezarr is actually a recent invention.

Lol, sorry I just hear ValhalLA so much it stuck. I think it's also Valhall in German.
As for your last point; :foodndrink:

Oblivion (specifically Mehrunes Dagon's realm) is more reminiscent to Hell.
And Hades (the place) is not a burning flame-scorched hell, only the pit of Tartarus. Elysium is where good people go and it is a paradise

Agree with you on most things but Mehrunes and Molag Bal seem more like Satan.

Funny that when I killed Alduin in Svongarde as a Bosmer Tsun said he would see me again at the end of my days then.

If it was, then only one race could complete the MQ in this game.
