*Spoiler*Comnts on the Gameing Union Interview

http://www.gamingunion.net/news/gamescom-fallout-new-vegas-interview--2720.html

Spoiler
I think that a lot of negative feeling towards Fallout 3 really came from the fact that you start out with bad weapons that you are bad with. So we thought, 'Ok, how about we start out with decent weapons that you're pretty good with.' And it just goes up from there.

So, when you start Fallout: New Vegas you have a Varmint Rifle and a 357 revolver, and a 9mm laser pistol and they feel good to use. They don't feel super strong but they feel reliable. You feel competent using them, not frustrated. And then, as long as you keep advancing your skills, the more powerful and cool they'll feel.

Edit note,
And yes, I think the interviewer transcribed something incorrectly. There is no "9mm Laser Pistol".

Generaly I dont have a problem with that (well apart from the fact that the
Spoiler
.357
is going to be a lamegun and not a real handgun (Bascialy its the newbi anti DT gun but then its compeating with guns like the 12.7mm for the tital of hand cannon so on average it balances out)

Letsd face it the odds of anyone on any playthrough still useing whatever guns you get your hand on during a normal plathough in level 1 is non existant (unless you luck into one of the"endgame uniques" right away)

It appears to be a gripe that you're going to start with half-decent weaponry, near as I can tell. I'm not sure I really see the complaint. If this were a Quake or something with a total of 12 guns maybe, but with the number in the game I don't see finding "bigger and better" stuff to be all that problematic, alongside being able to modify weapons (including, presumably, the starters) to improve them along the way.

The .357 seemed pretty decent to me when I used it at PAX. Took down a Powder Ganger in 3 shots.

I think he's trying to say that the guns you start out with are cool guns but because you start out with them they must be low lvl and will become useless quickly once you find another gun of that type and he will become a sad panda because he likes the .357 or somethin like that, not completely sure a little confused myself lol

If thats the case i disagree because for one he says the more you advance your skills the more powerful they become(same with fallout3). Which seems like a no-brainer because I used a silenced 10mm pistol from the beginning of my playthroughs all the way up to the end. I don't really see the problem here...lol

Not to mention weapon mods which will increase the "lifespan" of all the guns lol

Don't worry you can use the .357 for as long as you want :)

Laser pistol to start with? You actually sound like you'll have a good bit of cash if you choose to sell off your starting gear.

He's just talking about some weapons that the Doc gives you. So its not as much a spoiler as it is information.

It does kind of bring up a good point. I'd like the Laser Pistol to be more powerful than just a beginner weapon. Hopefully it's more of an Early to Mid game weapon that is powerful but extremely rare in the beginning of the game. Mods should extend the weapons' life spans, but that can only carry them so far. I'm kind of disappointed about the .357 being an early game gun as well. I guess we'll have to wait 36 days to find out.

I dont realy have a problem with a game starting you out with a decent setup from the start. my old P&P games I had no problem with starting everyone off with a minor magic item or two or even a full Glitterboy Power armor.

Im surprised noones comented on the "9mm lazer" Im kind of hopeing that means that we will see a bit more than the Generic "Laser pistol, Laser rifle, Plasma pistol, Plasma Rifle, Galtling lazer, alien pistol, alien Rifle," yawnfest that is the entire energy weapons catagory when compared to the literaly overflowing pletherasaurus of Balistic mayhem thats avalible in guns, Im wondering if we are going to see a bit more variety with thoes as well.

I'd like to see some of the energy weapon models from Fallout 1/2 coming back and actually being pretty powerful near end game. I barely used the Laser Pistol at all.

Maybe Doc Mitchell asks the PC "So what weapon are you skilled with?" and hands you one that you say you like.
Once you've been given an item the others he had to give you will disappear from his inventory just so that if you kill him you don't get an instant great loot.

I'm sure I read somewhere than you got some items from start-up depending on your answers to his GOAT-equiv test thing. E.g, your tagged skills.

Definitely cannot find the link for it, which is annoying. :brokencomputer:

But you could be right here.

Actually, you always start out with the 9mm Pistol. You can steal a Laser Pistol from his house. I read it in a preview where the player mentioned that they were using a Laser Pistol that they stole from Mitchell against a Giant Radscorpion.

Starting weapons based on your skillset would be a welcome change... But I don't care, because I will be getting an awesome shotgun and some awesome armor instead of a jumpsuit and pistol anyway.

If the 9mm lazer = Varmit rifle it may just be there way of making you able to use an energy weapon from the start.

Bascialy when you started (for real) in the vualt, you start with:

Some Basic first aid supplies
a BB gun, Lets face it at best it let you save on ammo for the 10mm if you used it Vs RadRoaches. but it is silent so you could use it to save ammo and deal with thoes pesty Radroaches and bloatflys)
the option to take a Decent Starting handgun that lets you take out the guys in starting body armor fairly easily (the 10mm)
A starting mellee weapon (the baseball bat)

and then all the usefull loot you could pick up before you exit the Vualt

This time around it sounds like you get to start with
a Decent Starting handgun that lets you take out the guys in starting body armor fairly easily
a Varmit gun for taking out. . . well lets be blunt, the New Vegas version of Radroaches and Bloatflys (TBH people around here STILL refer to anything that fires the 5.56 nato round a mousegun)
a "9mm Laser" that may just be a swap for the Varmit gun for thoes wanting to go the "energy guns" route instead of "Balistics"

If the artical that was describing the "new Vegas Start" is right you also get a mellee and unarmed weapon that you can pick up as well but thoes may have been "Borrowed"

Some of the older reviews seem to indicate that your starting Kit may have been modified by your skill selection (Ie a high med skill = more stim packs, a higher barter = more basic ammo and so on) which has me wondering if the "Preorder starting kit" defacto replaced that idea.

So, when you start Fallout: New Vegas you have a Varmint Rifle and a 357 revolver, and a 9mm laser pistol and they feel good to use.

Awesome.

I do love me some energy weapons, thankfully Bethesda made them more of a full playstyle choice rather than a pain in the ass to find like in FO1/2.

I've said it before and I'll say it again! I want to start with nothing and earn those weapons, so I really hope the starting weapons and armor are 1. weak or 2. low durabitly. I don't mind having a taste of powerful weapons but if they start with uber weapons at the beginning then it ruins that wasteland experence for me.

Its simple realy and fairly obvious baqsed on all the previews.

No matter what you start with a set of simple starter guns and supplies. Things like stim packs and food and simple armor.

Your tagged skills and maybe even your traits not to mention the preorder bonus packs give you MORE. The 357 magnum is very likely given to anyone tagging guns. The varmint rifle and 9 mm pistol are likely universal.

There is likely a universal low end laser pistol and a higher end variant if you tag energy weapons. Same with explsoives and so on.

I expect if you tag medicine you get super stimpacks and maybe a doctors bag.

If you tag survival you likely get food and whatnot.

If you tag repair you likely get repair kits and stuff.

So on and so forth.
