Gabe Newell, Valve's CEO, said that there's no evidence that Credit Card information was stolen. He did warn people to keep an eye on their reports, though, and to change their passwords.

Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:

Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

We don’t have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.

While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.

We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.

We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.

I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Gabe.

Yeah but anyone who knows how to secure themselves don't really have to worry. There are always precautions via the merchant through third party software or the merchant allowance limitations on check cards and certain credit cards or paypal.

Because it was hacked once? Heck, why you're at it, avoid anything computer related. Same logic applies.

Or they will in the future not make steam a requirement. Depending on how serious this breach is it might just happen. Of course with my luck they'd just move to origin.

Quoted For Truth. These things happen people, it's not just Steam. Quit digging for reasons to hate Steam, especially when this particular reason effects PCs in general, not just one program.

You may not like it, but online game stores like Steam and Origin are the future of PC gaming. Ten years from now stores may not even sell physical copies of PC games anymore.

Your opinion. I've had zero problems with Steam. So what, Steam got hacked... Once. It doesn't effect me, I change passwords 3 times a week and when I purchase online directly from Steam, I don't store the credit card information.

But you don't need to give them credit card details if you don't buy from them.
