Steam Reply about Aussie Steam Unlock!

Post » Mon Apr 25, 2011 4:14 am

Hello John,

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

The release date is determined by the region where you are physically located and is not tied to the version of the game you purchased. The publisher or developer of the title determines the release date for their games. Please refer to the Steam Storepage for this title to determine the release date in your region.

Let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Well that is the reply I got back from Steam explaining why Aussies who ordered through Steam have to wait 3 days to get their Steam version unlocked.

Now I can't understand how unlocking Steam ordered digital copies is a threat to a Bricks and Mortar store. If you are fine with ordering through Steam and can afford the download then you aren't going to buy a box. And if you really want the box or CE then you aren't going to buy through Steam. It doesn't give any advantage to one or the other.

All it does is make people annoyed and turn them away from any future games.

It's a small con for living in one of the best damn countries in the world though.

If it was released early through steam it WOULD pose a threat to actual stores. Why bother buying a hard copy if can get a soft copy 4 days early? There aren't as many people out there after a CE as you think. Just accept it. It's not a world ending issue, you live in an area and it will be made available to you at an agreed upon time (agreed between devs, distributers and customs). By the time you guys get it there should at least be a couple fixes floating around already.

Oh yeh apparently there is a delay in shipping the guide book, it wont be available until the 28th.

After meeting and talking to one of our moderators this summer I must say I'm very impressed with your country. You even have very nice looking money if not practical. But it sure doesn't get cold enough there. :lol:

Go to Tasmania and get an Antarctic blast. Probably still not as cold as Alaska though....

BTW even if you had a physical copy of the game before the 22nd, as you need to register with steam to play, it will not unlock the game before that date (from what I understand).

Please correct me if I am wrong. The only benefit a physical disk has with the current setup is that you do not have to download the game.

That is correct. It won't let you authenticate e until it is released in your area. And you can't play the game until you authenticate it with steam.

Okay here's the MAJOR problem. The game comes out tomorrow in retail stores that's the 21st. So when we all go to buy our copy tomorrow we're going to be told "lol wait until tomorrow" is that right?

No, you should be able to pick it up but won't be able to play it until it is released for your area. You can have the physical copy. It releases on the 22nd.

I meant steam saying that sorry if i wasn't clear. Well tomorrow should be an interesting day as a million people scream in frustration as they find out they can't play until "steam" says the game is released. *sigh* I'm really starting to miss the days when holding a copy of the game disc in your hand actually meant you owned it.

Yep. Well I don't know the time it unlocks but I will ask and try to find out.

I'm well aware of how it will be, it happened last night and it was a nightmare but I'll be here once again along with my great moderator mates and we will try to smooth the feathers. I'll try to serve them some biscuits or beer to keep them calmed down. And this time I know ahead of time that the retail versions won't open until they all open.

If I could give everyone the game right now I would sure do it. :cookie:

Yep, it's the same across all time zones. As was last night. So when Midnight came in NYC, the forum started being crazy, this moved across the states until it was 12:03 Pacific Standard time. For me it was 11PM and in Hawaii it was 10 PM. When it was finally unlocked everyone calmed down all at once but then the problems folks were having started.

Anyway, spread the news what time it unlocks. The more that know and understand, the better off I'll be. ;)

To the Aussies - if you feel that the business practice of being sold software in a store does not work and you feel aggrieved by it then make a complaint to the dedicated authorities such as the ACCC. The retailer may get grief from the authority who then may give grief to the publisher/steam or whoever and it may not happen again. Our laws and authorities in most cases cannot act upon our behalf unless a formal complaint has been made. I bought through Steam so this issue does not apply to me and as such I will not make a complaint based on this issue.

BTW ACCC has no jurisdiction over overseas companies and I'm no lawyer.

So in NZ it'll unlock at 1PM, and in AU at 11AM on the East coast

I think...

I think the people who are going to be waiting outside the games stores at day break will be the most peeved ones.

My local game store didnt even know we were going to have to wait until Friday to play.

I do find it strange Aussies don't get the unlock till Friday (although there are ways around this as many of my friends have already done and are enjoying the game legit on PC) since from what I read the game is officially released in Aus on Thursday not Friday so shouldn't the steam unlock go with it's official Australian release?

It would be like going to pick up a new car and then being told the keys will be delivered the next day.

No it's like picking up a new car, when the salesman left the car keys in the car, and will have to wait till for someone to unlock the car.

Steam = Salesman
Bethesda = Locksmith

If your anology was correct, then everyone one would have to wait, not just the aussies.

It's not just the Aussies. It's half the world. Not that that helps.

It's sort of like having wood and a fireplace but nothing to light it with.
