Sword Vs Mace

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 7:01 pm

Well, until I got my smithing up there, the Mace of Malog Bal was my favorite - I still carry it an use it occasionally, but now my swords are so good, it does not. Get used much.

I like the speed of attack school for my melee. I actually use two daggers quite a bit, and it works pretty darn good.of course, I have perks to support this style of play, and my armor allows me to that a few hits.

Really, if you like the mace - use it. You'll only be happy playing what you like. Let your character be your guide.

This is true. We all like to tout our own playstyles when asked. But Delta 1038, you should do what YOU feel "right" doing.

I don't take weapon-specific perks so I never saw a need to focus on one weapon style. That said, I find I prefer maces/warhammers over swords/greatswords. However, I dual wield with a dagger in the off-hand. Even with 2-handers, I'd rather have the deliberate increase in damage over a slight increase in swing speed.

I didn't find the boost from the perks offsets the restriction on weapon selection.

Sword. Mace seems so...easy. It seems to me that maces are for the dim-witted, the shock troop soldiers, or the savages. Two of the three are things I don't want to be and the shock troop soldiers...nah, I'm an assassin.

Swords for the win! Anybody can use them but only a master can perfect them.

Ha. I run with maces on my stealth characters too. Nothing like sneak attacking and bashing somebody's head in (or knocking it clean off their neck) with Molag Bal's mace.

To each their own.

Does the Mace animation actually knock their head off? :P

Dunno about the mace animation, but I have to say the sword spin-and-slash finisher is pretty damn cool.

Yeah, that one is bada$$ too. Dagger has a similar one. ...and they both have one wherein they stab Falmers in the side of their neck/head. :o

The really NICE thing about the 1 hand sword finisher cutscene is that it's less than half as long as the other weapons.

I've always been partial to having my Paladins wield one handed Axes. Just something about axes that fits with those type of characters for me.

Am I the only guy rocking duak-wielded axes? Looks badass and the double power attack is devastating. Quicker than a mace, more powerful than a sword.

Mace wins against armored enemies, but a sword is much more beatiful imo.

People spout this, but what really has armor? I mean bandits have it, but even then it is a low rating-low quality armor, so the % reduction to negate cannot be high.
Does a list of what is armored and what is not exist?

Swords if you ask me.
Maces are somehow too warrior priest-like.
Also, I find Dawnbreaker to be a perfect paladin weapon.

Maces have the most damage per hit, but they are slow. Sword on the other had are the fastest, and with their perks do nice critical damage too. Maces perks aren't that useful due to the lack of armored enemies (some bandits, dragons and chauruses are pretty much all there is). If i had to choose between them, i'd go for the swords.

And since you can get the Dragonbane sword, that one less mace target :hehe:

My Battlemage uses a Mace. I like the slow swing of something heavy, it makes combat feel more realistic. Maces are pretty deadly once you get the perks, so I decided early on not to take the Bonebreaker Perks or use enchantments on my Mace.
Mine too. I never did find a sword that was stronger than his orcish mace, so I didn't put any points into swords. Kinda weird having my first character be a blunt user, but I just couldn't find any nice unique swords and didn't find out about Dawnbreaker until after I'd finished the main quest.

He was a former ordinator though, so I suppose using a mace was fitting.

He did occasionally use a spectral ghost sword, and I loved the impaling animations, but that was more of a back up weapon.

Although maces have been used throughout history by Knights, the use of a sword is far more common.

They are faster, better looking and just generally more appealing to use.

I'd use a sword. Can't think of any time I'd use a mace really. Ugly things.

I have a design for my new warrior who will be a Paladin sort of warrior and I am looking for some outside opinions. I Know basically everything else I want for my fighter in terms of skills and perks. My main skills will be One Handed, Block, Heavy Armor, Smithing, and Restoration.

The one thing I am in constant debate on is whether to use a Sword or a Mace. I was just curious to see what some people have to say and why they feel that way.

Personally, I go for Swords. Mace's do much more damage than swords, but that is countered by the speed of the sword swing when compared to the speed of the mace swing. When swinging a mace, it feels simply too slow for my personal tastes (though I do like the results when damage is figured ;)).

But for my money, even my straight out Warrior-tank goes with Swords.

What an opponent uses doesn't give the same amount of protection as the player-characters armor. It's possible mudcrabs have armor, for example.

And well, the biggest thing that has a lot of armor is dragons.

Yes- you are repeating my question when you mention "possible" armor. I was wondering if the gameguide (i dont have it) says who/what has armor. If few/none have a significant amount, then the perk is not meaning much.

Dragons do have armor? If this is confirmed that is + for the mace, but not a negative for the blade as there is that dragonblade weapon that is about hands down best at dragon-fragon.

For damage, daggers are the best option. Then swords, then axes and finally maces. This is all to do with swing speed, but unfortunately daggers don't benefit from one hand bonuses, so swords may be superior in some aspects.

But dual wielding with a dagger in the left hand and mace in the right is the best option for damage, as the dual attacks speed is dependent on the left handed weapon. But you can't go far wrong with swords, at high level the damage difference between them and maces is minimal.

But for rp purposes, I'd suggest board and mace as it fits with the 'paladin' character, in my opinion.

They don't benefit from enchantments and potion boosts, was a little unclear sorry.

They do benefit from the armsman perk though, and other 1h perks. A few daggers are bugged, the blade of woe doesn't benefit from the dual flurry perk and all versions of the ebony dagger attack with the speed of a sword. Also the skyforge steel dagger can't be improved.
