Sword Vs Mace

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 6:02 am

I have a design for my new warrior who will be a Paladin sort of warrior and I am looking for some outside opinions. I Know basically everything else I want for my fighter in terms of skills and perks. My main skills will be One Handed, Block, Heavy Armor, Smithing, and Restoration.

The one thing I am in constant debate on is whether to use a Sword or a Mace. I was just curious to see what some people have to say and why they feel that way.

I don't like maces. Swing speed is slow, they "feel" clunky, and they're just plain ugly (in this game at least - and not ugly in use, just "sheathed"). I prefer faster weapons - it just feels more natural to me to use a sword. Everyone's opinion on this is different though.... and my sword pref is likely due to RL use.

I have to say go with the swords, Dawnbreaker is a very good weapon for a Paladin type character.

It has always been blades for me. My heart is broken that there is no more shortswords. - so I modded one to look like it is.

Fair enough, in RL I have tended to favor a shield above all else so I have been trying to find a weapon to compliment that preference. Skyrim gives me an entertaining luxury to play around with some various options.

Yes! I was just going to edit my post saying that very thing.... it's probably the only "paladin-centric" weapon in the game.

There's a mod for a "katana-type set" which has a short-sword variant (wakizashi? not sure now which one it is....) I LOVES me my katanas, you can find the mod here: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=8489

These are all craftable (at Steel, Ebony, and Daedric levels), upgradable at the grindstone, and enchantable.

You hit it on the head. I use the silver wakizashi from that set - it works with the steel perk so it fits right in the steel-arcane smith line.
My spellsword has used that blade (or other silver wakisashi of different enchants) since level 3. Very pleased with the look of that blade.

Heh, preaching to the choir, wasn't I? That's okay, someone else will see the link and find it too eventually. I really love the katana look - graceful elegant curved deadly blade.... and with the 1 hand sheathed on back mod.... MUCH easier to love the look.

Seems the modder might be MIA at this point, but the mod works fine for me (latest patchlevel, no issues). And no, I don't use the nightingale mod - I use the leather armor mod which makes the set similar to TG armor but somewhat recolored.

[And I do apologize for once again inadvertently derailing a thread. I hope the OP will forgive....]

I used to use TG, but if you take the cape off nightengale it ceases to be soo fruity (bad cape) - now it looks like a Dune desert suit. specially without the helmet.

I will stop stealing this threads thunder now.

Go with an Axe. More damage than a sword and faster than a Mace....plus it has a nice bleeding perk you can add.

Lol, I dont mind entertaining side rants Udey. Personally if I were using a sword I prefer a double edged straight blade, good for quick thrusts and a hefty chop, now if only the Imperial Sword wasnt so crazy weak.

i didnt like maces until i tired them, they hit harder and the armor penetration will do more damage over all to the hard to kill targets like anchent dragons and other level 50 beasts. make sure you stack stamina though.

I admit one complaint I have for maces is the decapitation animation. It seems more appropriate for a sword or even axe. Now if I hit the enemy in the head with a mace and it was like fallout 3, his head should explode which in my own sort of twisted mind, is preferred if I was using a mace.

It's not twisted. That's how it is. A sword (usually a 2 hand) will decap. A mace will explode (there's probably a better word for that, but it's late, and I've had a sufficiency of good burgundy tonight, so I'm a tad bit hazy....) There's actually no good reason to have "decap" part of a bludgeoning weapon's abilities, and some very logical reasons why it shouldn't be.

Exactly, I am not for excessive blood and guts in anything but I like more accurate and realistic depictions of injury in combat and I am well aware of what a mace would do to a person's head. And while yes the steel mace does look like the flanged edges are very sharp, I doubt it could decapitate so cleanly. But I suppose I am just nitpicking at the moment.

That's the sort of nipick with which I have NO issue. They should have done something else for the blunt weapons.

Paladins should be sword and board. Maces are for Clerics. :P

Go with a Mace man. The perks are well worth it.

My Battlemage uses a Mace. I like the slow swing of something heavy, it makes combat feel more realistic. Maces are pretty deadly once you get the perks, so I decided early on not to take the Bonebreaker Perks or use enchantments on my Mace.

If you're going the Paladin route then I guess Sword & Board.

Faster is better. Winning fights in Skyrim can be reduced to hitting the enemy before he hits you, because ANY weapon type can be pumped up to where it kills most targets with one blow.

I admit that while speed is important, even the quickest sword strike falls dead against a shield. The fact that a sword can be precise is its main advantage, or rather that its quick maneuverability allows for increased precision, but this is more relevant in reality than in skyrim.

Well, until I got my smithing up there, the Mace of Malog Bal was my favorite - I still carry it an use it occasionally, but now my swords are so good, it does not. Get used much.

I like the speed of attack school for my melee. I actually use two daggers quite a bit, and it works pretty darn good.of course, I have perks to support this style of play, and my armor allows me to that a few hits.

Really, if you like the mace - use it. You'll only be happy playing what you like. Let your character be your guide.
