Textures quality

If you think gaming is all about the graphics then your doing it wrong.

Pretty graphics are pretty but that's not why I keep coming back to a game.

I think Not Announced was supposed to refer to Fallout 4 and May Never Be was supposed to refer only to ESV.

I'm hoping ESV comes out before too long though.

If my wishes come true Obsidian will do such a good job that Bethesda will have them, with a few Bethesda guys, work on Fallout 4 (probably set back in the East Coast) while Bethesda gets to work on ESV taking lessons learned from New Vegas and criticisms of Oblivion into mind.

Pretty much exactly this.

if bethesda was smart..... they would say.... wanna make another fallout......

No, if Bethesda was smart they would make another TES game, as it's been four years since Oblivion.

Also, according to http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-08-16-bethesdas-todd-howard-interview?page=1, their next game will be released shortly after its announcement. Having three Fallout games in such little time will piss off a lot of people, including most of Bethesda's fanbase, the TES fanbase.

Well the IGN guy was probably playing the PC version of the game which has better graphics than the 360 version.

...and PS3 version, AND PS3 VERSION!!!!!!!

Stop making us PS3 users nonexistant or an afterthought, people, please?

We rarely get mentioned.

The PC version has better graphics than the 360 version and the PS3 version.

Why is their so many that only needs good graphics?
its just shut up. and let them do their job.
the graphics in Fo3/FNV are fine. and is graphics the only thing that you like in games? like, im usually playing Quake whit my friends and the graphics svcks but the gameplay is pwning. And also i found in an article that Bethesda is making a new engine possible for TES V :) or Fo4, happy now?!?

Dear devs, please answer. Did you really have skills to draw quality textures?! Your current textures from F3 and coming F:NV is really really ugly and looks like work of a child who get first impressions when using PhotoShop.

Please make your textures look like they must - realistic with very good quality. DONT BE LAZY!!!

I agree with you.

The engine is a piece of garbage. Deal w/ it

Oh really? Take a look at some of the mods before you say that.

Your kind should stick to an art gallery.

Art gallery? You should stick to playing on nintendo 64's.

1. Do better, please, before you start [censored]ing.
2. It's not their fault, there's no way the whole thing could be switched to another engine in two years and still be a good game.
3. Most of the pictures have been from alpha builds, a lot of objects are just placeholders.

Personally I'd rather have a deep and immersive role-playing experience then the best graphics ever. While their are better engines out their, the truth is that huge open-world games like New Vegas will never be compatible with what is considered the latest and greatest graphics. Those will show up in FPSs and adventure games and such.

If you only care about graphics in your games, save your money for L.A. Noire, supposedly it's very groundbreaking visually.

Alpha builds? There's 2 months left yet they just copied the same things from fallout 3. It's not "their fault" LOL. It's called "lets hurry and make a game" like what happened in modern warfare 2.

Why is their so many that only needs good graphics?
its just shut up. and let them do their job.

Why are there so many? Wow, take a look and see. If people didn't care about graphics then we should still play on the Atari jaguar. Guess what? We don't, that's why there's something like the "ps3, xbox360, custom rigs". At least make some NEW TEXTURES, not new models, not new monsters, give us something that doesn't look exactly like fallout 3 or just update the textures.

Stop defending the game and take a look at http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12056. As a ps3 user, I'm extremely disappointed and don't say "that's why you buy it for the pc" because I prefer the ps3 for gaming. The engine can handle it so this is not a first day buy for me, I'm going to wait till some special sale.

Good luck getting that to run on current consoles, considering you need a high-end PC to run those texture packs with a good framerate.

Of course it's TESV, anything else would be unlikely. For more info, you should check out the TESV speculation thread.

There's a lite pack which my friend had downloaded for his laptop. Looks better than what we see in NV and has a decent framerate considering his computer only has a 8600 gt and duo core.

Bear in mind that the consoles are 4 years old, and mid-end at launch, and suddenly that 8600gt doesn't seem so bad. Add in the fact that you're not reading from a slow-ass CD but can stream from a HDD much faster, as well as provide a lot more RAM (because who DOESN'T have more than 512mb these days?), and suddenly that laptop doesn't look so bad. When people say console hardware isn't very good, they're not joking around - the textures are about as high-res as they're going to get with that engine and hardware.

4 years yet they can still play on higher resolutions. Take a look at all the high end games - heavy rain, lost planet 2, killzone.

How hard is it to change or add a little more higher resolution texture? The textures are about as high res as they're going to get? I don't think so, if you can change the games textures and play it on a crap laptop, why not do it or at least improve it for the whole game. Console hardware's have enough ram to run and render the new textures because like I said, it doesn't have to be the "full retexture pack", it could just be the lite pack where consoles would be able to use.

Using the same textures is disappointing, moreover it's been 2 years.

Because the engine can't do it. It loads every texture into memory when needed, you can probably see why this is a bad thing when it comes to higher resolution textures.

It all boils down to, the game lags anyway. The PS3 can barely play GOTY. Adding additional strain ain't gonna happen.

The engine can't handle it yet it works with pc's that have nearly the same specs as a ps3. Additional strain? Then what about all the other nitpicks in the textures of things such as trees in NV? Maybe it doesn't need to have a higher resolution, but at least change the color scheme or something. Everything, and I mean everything looks exactly the same. What happened to the "engine update" or something like that? Plus, I've never experienced that "lag" but bugs frequently happen. Higher resolution or new textures should have been included, why use exactly the same thing. Oblivion was graphically updated when Fallout 3 arrived.

New textures are hard. They have a style going, to replace one texture they'd have to replace most of the rest for it to not look out of place. That's a lot of work, which clearly Obsidian are not willing to do, instead focussing on gameplay and storyline. I'm fine with that, nicer graphics would be nice, but the current ones are functional.

And that laptop doesn't have "almost the same specs as a PS3" where it counts, storage speed and RAM capacity. Those two alone make it a lot easier to stream higher quality textures.

True dat, but if they had hired some other workers to multitask or even ask some modders it would be fabulous. And I do guess they're okay..

RAM perhaps, but a 25 gb ram (ps3) is greater than that of the 4 gb ram laptop.

As someone mention before i think the problem is to get all the textures into the memory in a open world game. The PS3 with it's Gefore 7xxx generation card has the most limitiation on texture memory (256 MB) of all the three platform. For example Heavy Rain looks beautiful most of the time...but only within its very limited area. An open world game in the quality of Heavy Rain on current gen console...i have yet to see.

Crysis 2 is going to do that but the engine is also great. But I just don't see why they can't add new textures, why reuse the same ones again?

I don't know where you got 25GB from, but the PS3 has 256mb of faster RAM, and 256mb of slower ram, totalling 512mb. You may be thinking of the hard drive size, which is irrelevant unless you can install the game to it.

Crysis 2 looks good but when you look closer they use a few textures over and over again and play with plain coloured textures (which saves a lot of memory). Also how it is lighted can make it look way better than it is, this worked wonders on Mirror's Edge. But let's wait how it really turn out. Don't get me wrong Fallout 3/New Vegas could look better than it looked today, but what do you expect from a modified Gamebyro engine from 2005?

Why reuse the same ones? Time and budget constrains i guess, they can't hire additional 3D modeler/texture artist to put the game out at time and budget. I was also kinda dissapointed when Fallout 2 used most of the Fallout 1 tileset, but it was fun anyways. Damn...now i want to play Fallout 2 again... :)

^Dude, you read it wrong (@ orly) . It says:

Memory:

- 256MB XDR Main RAM @3.2GHz
- 256MB GDDR3 VRAM @700MHz

which is turd.

And anyway, there's no use comparing it to those high rez games you mentioned, as those game engines aren't designed to tackle massive open worlds. Of course they can use higher resolution textures as there's much less to render. And the problem isn't the texture quality - it's the fact that the engine doesn't do shadows and lighting at all well. It makes everything look really flat and dull IMO. I don't really mind though, since graphics aren't the main focus on a game like this.

Crysis is a pretty large game though and it does feature sort of a small sanbox feeling like far cry 2. I hope fallout nv's rping and other things will make up for the lack of new textures.
