The Archmage robes and NPC comments

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 9:42 am

I've used the console to get the hoodless version of the archmage robes and to my astonishment all of the sudden after I started wearing the robes I begin to draw some attention to the NPC.

2 new quotes that I never heard of until after I started wearing the hoodless archmage robes:

"Fancy robes. You a wizard or somethin?" and "You must be one of those wizards from the college in winterhold."

Any particular reason why my original archmage doesn't draw this much attention like it does with the hoodless version?

I've been getting some unusual comments about wearing Stormcolak uniform as well. Hadvar was telling me I should take it off outside during these times.??

I recall to hear the second Archmage quote you got there, while I'm on an unpatched xbox version, so I think that one is just rare. As for the first one, you got me puzzled too. Can't give any info :P and I never had a comment (that I remember that is) about my Imperial clothing (RP'ed Imperial in the Imperial legion that, oh well you get the picture :P )

I remember doing a quest for the stormcloaks where I had to send in false information to the imperials and decided to wear an imperial gear and when I came back I started getting flack from the other men and women from my squad.

My guess is there's some scripting strangeness going on - for instance, when I was using the mod to get the TG armor without being in the TG, I got a LOT of guard comments about "knowing TG armor, not fooling anyone". On the toon that got the armor "legit" no one said a word. Now, I have a mod that makes the "vanilla" ugly leather look like the TG armor, and no one says a word.

Scripting in TES games has always been fairly "unusual" in its effects....

The best is when you're wearing the Archmage robes in Dragonsreach and the court wizard tells you that you should apply to the Mage's College--if you think you have the aptitude. WTF?

These are some screenshots that I took from NPC commenting on my hoodless archmage robe.

After for so long playing this game I never once heard these quotes coming from the NPC's until after I console the archmage hoodless robes. I wonder if this is in fact another glitch? I never receive any of these comments from wearing the original version.

I'm going to try going to dragonreach to see if he still says it... or if this archmage hoodless robe stops him from saying those repeated words.

While this isn't probably triggered by the robes I do like Enthir's new dialogue when I approach him in his room " Absolutely nothing illicit going on here, Archmage, that you can be certain of". I also like the grumpy Orc librarian Urag's comment " Archmage or not, my rules on books still stand".

I got the "Fancy Robes. You a wizard or somethin'?" dialog from Alvor with unmodded Archmage robes. He was the first non-college, non-greybeard NPC I interacted with after donning the robes.
On another character, I got quite a few of comments from guards on the Thieves' guild armor (legitimately obtained).
I've never had comments on Stormcloak or Imperial armor, though I didn't wear the former for very long and only wore the latter while not a member of the Legion.

The wizard up in dragonreach still says his same ole dialog about applying for the college of winterhold even when I am wearing the hoodless archmage gear. It's no way to shut him up over it.

This is true. Some of the scripting leaves a lot to be desired. Perhaps it will get fixed eventually.

Yeah some outfits get guards to say some special comments. Triggering them is just kinda random though. I remember I ran around in Penitus Oculatus armor after completeing Hail Sithis! and the guards were like "Hmm. You're not too good at your job are you?".

You know I messed with his books before I became Archmage, he gets pissed. Then, I became Archmage and thought, "ooh, I'm gonna go check out that library!". As soon as I got in there homeboy let me know that still was not a good idea. I left, lol.

I also consoled in the hoodless version and noticed the very same thing. I decided to look it up in the CK to see what was going on.

The comments about your mage robes are triggered if you wear anything on the WICommentCollegeRobesList form list. That list contains 3 items: Common mage robes, apprentice mage robes, and hoodless archmage robes. The hooded archmage robes are not on the list. I'm not sure why Bethesda set it up that way.

Tell me about it... Maybe we were given a fake archmage robes and the one that we use console on is the real thing?

His scripting went wrong: the game checks membership of the CoW, but they forgot to let it check you instead of himself :D

I just had a Solitude Guard compliment me on my "fine imperial armour" (I wore the steel cuirass)

I like the guards comments when you are wearing Ebony Armor and Steel Armor.

"By Ysmir! Is that... ebony? What I wouldn't give to have a set of that!"

There are certainly at least two triggers for the comments. Faction status and equipped items, but which takes precedence seems a mystery. They may be specific like the ebony comment, or the one you get by carrying the shield Peryite gives you. But most of the gear comments by the guards are odd, though. Like, "the gods gave you two hands for your weapon, and you use them both. I can appreciate that," even when I'm most emphatically carrying a 1h sword and board. Maybe she meant my bow? "Light armor means light on your feet. Smart," is usually closer to the mark.

The other things are more specific. Since this guy is almost entirely in DB gear, I hear, "psst! Hey, I know you. Hail Sithis!" which makes sense, but though I don't have a stitch of TG gear (but am the head honcho there) I often get, "hands to yourself, sneak-thief!" or, "if I find your hand in my pocket, I'm going to cut it off!" This latter one is puzzling. Cut off what? My hand? His pocket?

Similar to the TG thing are the CoW comments. This guy is not a mage at all, but often hears stuff like, "so you can cast a few spells. Am I supposed to be impressed?" or "why don't you conjure me up a warm bed" or "why are you messing around with Saarthal?" or however that goes.

Farengar doesn't have much variety in his dialog, but next time approach him with the Candlelight spell active.

Skill related commentary.

"hands to yourself" = high sneak skill
"hand in pocket" = high pickpocket skill

Although "high" in the above is a bit misleading. I find you start to get these types of comments when the relevant skill hits the grand high total of 30. Anyone know what setting controls that? I'd like to set it to 60 or 70 maybe, you know actually highly skilled in the related Skill field.

Quest completion related I believe. There are many different triggers, and since you don't have to be much of a mage to actually finish the mage's quests (or the other questlines for that matter)... yeah they put in things like this that fire when you hit some of the other milestone markers.

I know all comments you mentioned in those. The last few are skill/guild related. Not Item Related.

Also, the guards comment for Spellbreaker is something like this:

"What is that shield? It's dwemer in origin but its different." (Not totally correct but that basicly what they say for that shield)
