Ebony mail + nightingale gloves boots and hood are amazing http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/594702185022719015/5ABB446A79FA9C18A9F5DC5FCF5312A6D3A6BB23/
That's what I got my guy wearing. In the end I couldn't stand the smoke that appears in combat and turns enemies black.

Ebony + the Helm of Yngol works quite well.

Nightingale night armor and priest masks on my female Nord
Deadric with ancient Nord helm on another of my female Orcs.
Full Orcish heavy set on another of my female Orcs
mixed steel armor, deadric boots/gauntlets and ancient nord helm on my newest female orc.

If you want to serve the Empire in a secret way, wear Ancient shrouded cowl, Ancient shrouded gauntlets, Pentilus occulus boots and Armour.

I like the Imperial (closed) Helmet best with the full Penitus Oculatus Armor set.

On top: all on female...

Stormcloak Officer (bear) Helmet, Fur (long sleeve) Armor, Bracers, Shoes

Dragonplate Helmet, Falmer Armor, Steel Nordic Gauntlets, Steel Cuffed Boots

Jagged Crown with the full Dragonscale Armor set

Helm of Yngol, Ebony MAIL, Daedric Gauntlets & Boots

All on female ;)

Orcish armor + Leather/Fur Boots + Fur/Leather Bracers = I don't care for heavy boots/ bracers (aesthetically)

I've been using the Ebony Mail, Daedric boots and gauntlets and either an Ancient Nord Helm (antlers...), shrouded (DB) hood or enchanted Forsworn headdress on my female Vampire Imperial. I love that shadow effect you get with the Ebony Mail. Also casting invisibility and getting close enough to skeletons for them to just unwittingly melt away from the AoE damage it deals is a nice bonus.

For my male Nord Paladin, the Imperial closed face helmet or the Helm of Yngol with a combination of either Steel Plate, Dragonbone or Dwarven armor.

And for my male Dunmer Assassin, the Nightingale hood/mask and Dark Brotherhood armor. Reminds me of Jack of Blades from Fable.

If I used the enchanting alchemy loop to improve my armor, id do this, but i personally just prefer the dwarven armor full set. There needs to be a perk called mix and match for HA and LA, then Id mix it up more.
