If the blades are in hiding with the thalmor then why......

Couldn't Paarth have filled you in? He seemed to know everything about the previous war against alduin. Mainly because he was there. I don't really see the necessity of the blades.
You wouldn't know about dragonrend so you'd never go ask the greybeards and thus wouldn't meet paarth.

Huh? The greybeards tell you that you'll meet their leader eventually when they feel you're ready.

What'd be even better is having Alduin do it.

Alduin: So, we meet again, Dovahkiin.

PC: What?

Alduin: You know, Dovahkiin? Dragonborn?

PC: What's that?

Alduin: A mortal with the soul of a dragon. You can absorb the souls of dragons you defeat and use them to power shouts.

PC: Shouts?

Alduin: Dragon language is magical. You can manifest fire, ice, and many other abilities by shouting in our language.

PC: That's neat.

Alduin: Indeed. You're also the only one who can stop me.

PC: Who are you?

Alduin: Alduin... You know... The World-Eater? The Firstborn of Akatosh? The dragon destined to devour the world so it can be born anew?

PC: Oh... If I'm the only one who can stop you, should you really have told me all this?

Alduin: ...No. I shouldn't have. Bye, I guess...

ROFL.

You only know to ask the graybeards about dragonrend because of Esbern, the world might have ended before they thought you ready to meet thier leader. They don't even mention a leader untill after you ask about dragonrend. Like it or not the blades help save the world. Its fact.

the greybeards themselves know of the shout also. Pissed me off that I had to go temple diving when the greybeards coulda just spoke up and told me about it.

The greyneards are to tight lipped about the stuff u need because they scared for their leader.
Blades give u all the info under the understanding ur gonna take down all dragons not serving you.

They do mention him. When they talk about the mountain path and about you being strong enough with the voice to make your way up there. They think you're strong enough by the time you stop around to ask about dragonrend. How much of the main quest do you remember?

They mention paar, not the dragonrend. Even the greybeards know about dragonrend, not the shout words themselves but know of the dragonrend and what it does.
I do remember, they mention paar at beginning but nothing about dragonrend. When u finally learn of it from the temple, the greybeards are yes we know of that shout... When it coulda help out right at begonning.

My biggest beef with the Blades (and to a lesser extent, the 'Beards) is both their slavish adherence to principle.

Nevermind the fact that he was the reason that the mortals were able to throw Alduin's yoke off in the first place, nevermind the fact that he's been contemplative ever since, nevermind the fact that he took wing to fight Alduin along your side, nevermind the fact that he could potentially lead more dragons down his path once Alduin falls for good, nevermind the fact that the alternative was being offed by Alduin for a long while... Paarthurnax is a bad bad dragon and must be killed.

Likewise, the Graybeards just lounge around High Hrothgar with their thumbs up their butts, squandering their power to make a difference in the world in some overreactive fear of "abusing" it.

They literally only know the history of the Shout. They don't know the words or any way to find it. They may not even know about the Time Wound, so why would they bother telling you about something that may not even exist anymore?

So, that's why their shouts are so powerful - they plug up the leak so the shout doesn't leech out the other end. I'm gonna' have to try that. :o :P

And hence when you talked to Paarth about defeating Alduin, it could have easily been brought up there. He was never opposed to it. He doesn't know the shout, but he's the one that directs you to how to learn it.

eh I get what ur saying. Still pissed me off after visiting the wall, before going up to paar talking with the greyneards and there all like yes the dragonrend. We know of that shout and what its used for, we juat dont care to know the words. Then paars like yes that shout, wanna learn ot grab an elder scroll.
They coulda just gave a heads up at the beginning, instead of waiting on me to bring it up first.

What do you want them to say? "Back when the Dragon War erupted three of the first Nords to learn the Thu'um created a shout called Dragonrend, which they used to defeat Alduin. It conflicts with our religion so we never learned it and we have no idea if a record of the words exist anywhere in the world for you to learn them from. Would you like to meditate with us?"

Lol maybe lol.
It jist seemed that they knew of it but didnt want me to know of it. That what erked me. You know the only thing ever in existence that was ever able to even hurt alduin, that bigass dragon rezzing all the other dragons from the dead and the destruction of our world. I mean I am the dragonborn prophized to take down alduin from those stones on the way up the mountain and even they know my destiny is to take on alduin,, coulda gave me a heads up at beginnimg about to look for info on the shout to take on alduin at beginning and tell me im not strong enuf yet, go learn more shouts and bam. At least a heads up.

But I will say that I did respect the more that they went against their values and told me that paar was the person to talk to learn more about. Granted you could tell he didnt want to but I respected him somewhat that he placed saving the world above his values. You can take that for sarcasm but some people ingame do know about the kalpas and the world being reborn and whatnot and that saving this world is dooming the next one for beginning.

I don't think there's any way for them to have learned it even if they wanted to, philosophical reservations or no. None of them were there when it was created and used originally, if Jurgen Windcaller knew it I doubt he would've passed it on to his disciples, and if any of them knew it I doubt they would have taught it to anyone else once they became his followers. Paarthurnax doesn't know it and never did, so he couldn't teach it to them.

In addition, there's the fact that dragons have been MIA from the world for their entire lifetimes, and for quite a long time before that, and without dragons around to fight there is no use for Dragonrend. There hasn't been a reason to use or teach the shout for who knows how many generations, from what I can tell pretty much everyone believed dragons were a thing of the past that would never have to be dealt with again. It's little wonder that knowledge of the shout died out long ago... there was simply no apparent reason to preserve it. The last person who actually did know it probably died ages ago without ever teaching it to anyone.

nah im not saying that they shoulda taught me, they didnt know the words.

They did know about the shout and what it was used for, im guessing paar told them, bc they knew what I was talking about before I asked paar.

Thats the thing that ticked me off about them is that they are mum on the shout at begonning when they know ur the dragonborn on their stones thats to defeat alduin. They know its the shout thats needed to take down alduin, but they would like for you not to know ot and let the world end so that it cant be used against paar and is against their beliefs.

But thankfully they put the worlds salvation above their beliefs. Just irked me that they kept it hush hush and also when confronted it shows they dont want you knowing about it, but like I said thankfully they relent and teach ya the words to see paar to het the info from him.

They shoulda just gave a heads up to keep a lookout on that shout and if ya get stronger, wiser, or get info on ot then youd be able to talk to their main man about it. But instead they keep ya on the dark and if it wasnt for the blades we wouldnt have gotten to see paar so soon or give us a heads up to ask him about it.

But o agree its their philosphy to let what happens happens and let alduin eat the world. Its been done before and a new world will be borth anew. But im a clog in the machine and just disrupting the whole cycle

How much of the main quest do you remember? They don't mention their leader Paarthurnax until you ask about Dragonrend, Arngeir then refuses to help you further claiming your not ready to meet with their leader and it has nothing to do with strength but philosophy. Paarthurnax overrides them by shouting down the mountain. If not for Esbern making the dragonborn aware of Dragonrend the protagonists might not arrive at the throat of the world to talk with Paarthurnax until its to late to save the world.

You only know to ask about Dragonrend because of Esbern and you only know about Paarthurnax because you asked about dragonrend. Now your free to rewrite the game to edit out the importants of the blades but I could rewrite the game to edit out the importance of Paarthurnax and the Greybeards. You could learn all the words from walls and dragonsouls and then Esbern finds the records on the wall of how Alduin was thrown forward in time using an elderscroll and figures you could use the scroll at that location to travel back and learn dragonrend.

You rewrite the game to take away anyones importance to the plot, but as it was written the blades were necessary.

Well I see imperial scouts taking out giants... So I'm not needed... Also 3 nord heros took alduin out for me... So again I'm not needed... So by this logic the entire mq was not needed...

Or it it lore>game mechanics

Aslso you can essentially take out any part of the game and all side quests as they are not needed. Wright out the 2 nords that save you because I can essentially run out the main gates or somthing to that effect by myself. Or taking out all the jarls. Or the grey beards etc.

But they do add to the story. Some more than others. Just because they contribute a little does not mean they are not needed. Without the blades you would not have found out about dragonrend. Grey beards didn't tell you because it's a shout that goes against their beliefs.
