Hey guys, I'm looking for a new computer build for my dad. I've done builds before so know how to, but I'm not really sure where to start with this one.

He's not a gamer or video editor or anything like that, mainly he does work processing, internet browsing, and video watching. However, I would like the PC to be fairly powerful.

Here are some pre-requisites:

4GB RAM (DDR3 would be fine, it's more or less cheaper than DDR2 now)
Quad or tri-core processor (doesn't need to be anything extreme, I'd lean towards an AMD because they tend to be cheaper)
Motherboard (nothing to skimp on, AM3 socket. Onboard graphics should be fairly decent as far as they go)
No GPU is required, only a good onboard chip
Case doesn't need to be anything fancy, but should be somewhat attractive. I can pick this myself easily enough
Hard drive doesn't need to be gigantic, figure 500GB or something like that. 10000RPM isn't required either, I don't think it makes enough of a difference for something as simple as word processing

No monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, or sound card is required. I'll be able to pull all of those from his current PC (along with his floppy drive [which he needs, he has a lot of old files on floppies] and one of his optical drives, the other I can get easily enough]).

Overall, I'm looking for the build to be $400 or less.

The Canon is known to, but you have to download the drivers from Canon, ignore the packaged instructions, and follow instructions that are pretty much what is given for W7 in the linked review.

Most other MF printers will be similar, but I have a fondness for Canon.

I talked with my mom, and my dad wants something that prints color, too. I looked on Newegg at all-in-ones laserjets with colors, and.... crap, those are wicked expensive! D:

Well, screw that, my mom and I will get the monochrome ourselves. The canon you linked to, is it wireless? My mom has her computer upstairs, and mine is downstairs... I've never set up printers on networks and stuff before, my dad connected our old printer to this wireless thing, but that seems rather complicated. So, yeah, my mom is less tech-inclined than I am. I might be able to set up stuff, but when it comes to troubleshooting network problems, I'm clueless. I'd really, really rather not have to ask my dad for help. I'm good at following instructions ni the manual, though!

If you have the printer connected to one computer, then you will be able to print from any other computer on the same network (with some minor setup). That's what I do.

Yeah, color lasers cost an arm and a leg, and so do the supplies for them. We have one at our office, and you're not allowed to print to it unless you're doing marketing copy, because it costs at least a dollar a page for the consumables alone.

That printer is USB only. To use it over wireless, you'd have to locate it near a computer that had wireless, or use something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122151&cm_re=wireless_print_server_usb%2d%5f%2d33-122-151%2d%5f%2dProduct.

Newegg has some printers with wireless interfaces, but they are all inkjets.

Okay, so what if... What if I use the USB to plug the printer into my computer. And I'm on a wireless network, so everyone would be able to print from it, right? Is the USB cable long? The place where I'd want to set up the all-in-one printer thing would be about.... maybe 6 feet at most, taking into account curving and bending, from the back of my PC tower.

If the USB cable is not long enough, buy one off amazon.com, they are really cheap:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=usb+cable&x=0&y=0

And here is a 10 foot one on newegg:

Just shop around for the right size.

I opened the Catalyst Control for ATI today just to look around and I accidently click Auto-tune on the Overdrive section and I waited till it finished what it was doing. Now my CPU has bumped up about 3 degrees celsius. What exactly did I do?

Yes; just set up the printer on your computer, and set the printer for sharing. Then anybody in your "workgroup" can see the printer and print to it.

The maximum length for a USB 2.0 cable is 5 meters (about 16 feet), so 6 feet is no problem. It appears that the printer doesn't come with a USB cable, so ordering a 10-foot USB A-B cable (a common size) would take care of you.

You overclocked your graphics card. Use the defaults option on the bottom to undo it if it is not something you want. Look at the GPU Clock: and Memory Clock: sections on the OverDrive tab with the GPU under load and see what they are at, let me know. (What GPU also?) Run http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/ or some other GPU benchmark to see if it's stable. It will get HOT, but that is the purpose, to see if it can handle it. (M5870 is F@H and it's currently 73C. It's 30-35C when Idle depending on ambient. My CPU is F@H to.)

I've decided on a different build. What do you guys think?

Is there anything better I could get?

Also, if I chose the Radeon 5770 graphics card, would I have to change my power supply to http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153102?

WAAAY overkill on the PSU. The Radeon 5770 is a power efficient card. Even the GTX 260 doesn't need that much. You could away with something ike these easily:

Get back to ya later if no one has responded. Bit too busy right now. $400 is doable since there is no need for a GPU among other accessories. I take you still need the OS?

Most laptops aren't great for gaming in the first place, but with that graphics card I don't expect you will be running any new games at all.

I could be wrong, but the 3000 series is pretty old, and 3100 sounds like the low-end version of that series, so this is my interpretation.

What I'm asking is how well will it run games like TF2 or somethin.

The weakness here is that Radeon 3100 chipset. TF2 does run on weaker hardware being on the HL2 engine, but don't expect the greatest settings in the world. Probably low-medium. For more recent games like FO3, I'd expect very low.

It's an HD4890 1GB

GPU Clock:240MHz (that's in the Current Values, the one above is set to 960MHz)
Memory Clock: 975MHz (the same in both sections)

I just tried running the FurMark, and it ran for a few seconds, then my entire screen went grey. And I had to restart.

Every time I try to update my drivers I get http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l316/camtheman1993/driverserror.jpg?t=1266375121.
I have a radeon 4870 1gb. XP 64 bit if that matters.

CASE+RAM Combo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.343336
CPU+MOBO Combo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.334992
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371033
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136320

That ended up being about $386. If you want a quad-core, there's this deal for a bit more:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.334990

Or you can settle for this:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5713654&CatId=5291

AM2+/AM3 platform though, meaning DDR2 RAM and not the best branded ones either. Not much of a fan of Ultra PSUs either. Your choice.

Should be fine. Delta-built unit and this one is decent for the price...apparently modular as well.

Looks good, thanks :).

Also, what do you think of AData RAM? Is it fairly reliable?

And I technically don't need a new OS, I have a copy of XP lying around and could use the key from my dad's old Dell PC. I know that a copy of Windows 7 OEM would be around $100, so it's probably not worth it at this point.

Also, what are your thoughts on swapping out that Athlon X3 for a Phenom II X3? I mean, http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010340343%2050001028%201050746438&name=Phenom%20II%20X3 two are only $10-20 more than the Athlon. The OEM is cheaper and is rated higher than the 705e, aside from having a higher thermal design. I guess my main question to you is if it would be worth it. Of course, the issue with it is that it doesn't have any combo deal that I would need, though I may be able to get that in a combo with RAM and a MOBO.

I need a prebuilt gaming desktop for under $700. I'd like it to last a while before it needs an upgrade. Please get back to me ASAP.

The newegg computers i've looked at aren't very good and cyberpower and ibuydirect have bad customer reviews for how often I hear about mistakes they make. I'll look at tiger direct, I have a keyboard and mouse and a monitor from my brother's old infected computer.

Thanks. :)

You will not get that much in a prebuilt for under $700. You will get better value by building your own. There are a number of under-$700 builds drifting around the various tech threads, here and in Oblivion HW/SW and Fallout 3 PC Issues.

If you must have a prebuilt, try:

http://outlet.us.dell.com Their stock varies, and moves fast, but right now they have a number of suitable models (with an nVidia 8800 GT, ATI 4670, or ATI 4850) for $739 and up.

http://www.bestbuy.com Suitable models run $649 and up.

http://www.tigerdirect.com You won't get better models this way, as they carry equally no-name goods like Cyberpower, iBuyPower, Visionman, and Cybertron, but they have suitable models for $600 and up.

A-Data has come up in regards to reliability and quality over the years, so should be reliable.

The Phenom II chips are better and more preferable since they actually have L3 cache. If you can afford it, then by all means. Although for your dad's purpose, it's not really a big deal. The Athlon II X3 would already be sufficient.

Ibuypower and Cyberpower about the only PC makers you can really look at to get a system under $700 that has horsepower. Example:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227218

I'll get back to you later on alternatives though. Next thread, which is coming.
