Who here hinks AlienWare is overpriced

Everyone who knows what they are talking about does ;)

and you would be better off with another brand, or, making you own computer (if you have the time).

You're always better off building your own (if you can). You can build it exactly to your needs.

Finally went ahead and bought these today. Looking forward to getting them in a couple of days and putting it all together. Sould be quite the improvement over my old 4400+ and 2GB of RAM that I currently have, not to mention that my current motherboard has been a bit temperamental lately.

The 1GB 4650 is badly out of balance, even though it is the faster GPU. If a game were to "think" it should use that full 1GB to load up with resources, it would take four whole frames (at 60 FPS) to do so.

The 512MB 3850 is better balanced, a better fit for the rest of the computer, and no slouch. I would be sure I had an adequate power supply for it, though: a good 300W power supply or better.

Cool, thanks, I went ahead and bought the 3850 and a new 700w power supply from Rosewill. I have never had a bad experience with Rosewill and I didn't want to spend a whole lot.

Urm...ok. Just watch that PSU with an eagle eye. While Rosewills don't have the worst reputation in the biz, they are FAR from the best.

I have a .wps file that I need to open and edit, after reinstalling windows a while back I don't have any Microsoft Word/Works programs. Anyone know of a good, free, word processor that can open this and edit it?

I need a new printer. The current one (the only working one) is on the fritz, and I need something of my own to rely on for my college assignments.

I know very little about printer types, other than that the ink cartridges are wicked expensive.

I don't really care about color - all I use printers for is to print out assignments I typed up, or articles (so I don't kill my eyes reading Times New Roman on the computer screen).

What's the difference between inkjet and laser jet? Which is better? I need something cheap and small, but reliable. No more than $50 if it can be helped.

Can someone recommend a GPU that will run Morrowind and WoW on High settings, and Oblivion and Fallout 3 on medium/high settings but is a smaller card, efficient, and cheaper?

Right now my specs are as follows.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
AMD Phenom 8550 Triple Core 2.2GHz
3GB of DDR2 RAM

Needs to fit in a smaller case, and needs to have small power output.

Get a laser printer if you only plan on printing text and greyscale images. Laser printers can print out a whole page in like 5 seconds and they use "toners" instead of ink, which last a lot longer and are pretty cheap if it ever runs out.

I use http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16828113290, if you are willing to pay a little more than $50, but I bought it in 2008 so there may be a better deal these days. Still, I am quite happy with it.

EDIT: Oh and the one I linked it looks like the $50 off sale ends today, so if you can't order that today then you will have to look for another deal.

Not if you get them on sale. Plus you pretty much never have to change the ink.

The one you linked to has good reviews, too... *scratches chin*

I might be able to convince one of my parents to fund this if... I know there are some models that can do scanning, our black-and-white zerox machine is huge, ancient, and not performing very well. Any good laser printers that are also copiers?

EDIT: fixed the terminology

Which would be better for audio quality?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826158082
or
http://www.amazon.com/Skullcandy-SCS-SCBP3-5-Skullcrushers-Subwoofer-Headphones/dp/B000OYFOVM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=aht&qid=1266282338&sr=1-2
Specifically bass effects.

Probably not, if you want something under $200.

If you have room you could get a new printer as well as a smaller scanner. I'd start http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&SubCategory=44&N=2010330044 if you want to browse, I know nothing about scanners. :brokencomputer:

I would stay away from skullcandy like the plague. Lots of muddy bass and low quality everything else for at least twice as much as other products with similar sound quality is a rip off.

Yep, I am aware that thermaltake and coolermaster have better reputations, but Rosewill has not let me down yet so I'll stick with them until they do :).

There are very few laser printers for $50 or less, and none I'd consider good. The brother HL-2140 that Nami88 linked is an excellent value at $70.

If you want a multifunction (combo printer/scanner/fax), this costs $120 but is a good one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16828102029 See the customer review "Compatible with 64 bit Windows 7, but takes some work" at the same location for proper setup instructions.

Any suggestions for a 500+ watt power supply for a micro ATX motherboard? Preferably under or around 100 dollars?

Okay, cool. My dad gets frustrated easily with compatibility issues, however. What all-in-one multifunction devices work with XP 64-bit? Even if the model is a bit pricier, it might be worth it just to avoid potential hassles with the OS and the drivers.

OK, but you won't get an affirmation for your choice here. The power supplies Corsair famously blew up in load testing were ATNG, which is one of Rosewill's "better" (scare quotes intentional) OEMs. Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTVEtr14FEA

The Canon is known to, but you have to download the drivers from Canon, ignore the packaged instructions, and follow instructions that are pretty much what is given for W7 in the linked review.

Most other MF printers will be similar, but I have a fondness for Canon.

PSU is junk I'm guessing. Standard factory rubbish. :P

Budget would be $200CAN but if I really felt like it I could go up.

Also forgot to ask, what resolution are you hoping to play at?

Edit- For $255CAD:

PSU: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139004 - $110
GPU: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102859 - $145

New PSU as it's really the most important piece of hardware in your PC, would never want my hardware relying on anything but the best. The 5750 should be plenty powerful all the way up to 1920x1080, where you'd really have to start dialing down some of the eye candy.

I'm not sur eif those prices are good though, perhaps someone else could shed some light on that.
