Is the game guide worth buying?

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 12:33 am

yes the map inside is nice. Honestly there are times where I had to read the strategy guide to make sure I was doing something right when encountering nasty bugs. I am talking about bugs with reviving dragons that are essential that you cannot kill..yes... it was a pain. I ended up reading what to do and found that there were two ways to finish that quest and that I didn't have to wait for the guard to do something about it and when I intervened and did it myself the bug didn't happen. So yeah, it does help.

I think I've only ever bought game guides for Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. I don't buy the guides for quest descriptions/walkthroughs. I mainly buy them to get a list of items, spells, skills, races, and classes (well, now its archetypes). I just like looking it over while in bed and thinking of different builds or gear collections I can implement. For that reason I think the guides are well worth it.

To be honest, in the olden days, a game manual would give you all this. And it could be that the morrowind one did and I am confusing the actual game manual for a guide. So I guess I got the guide so that I could get a proper manual. I usually only refer to the first 80 or so pages of the guide.

I think the strategy guide is a great read and has a ton of useful information. I've gotten a lot out of it. In fact many times after playing the game I'll find myself browsing through the strategy guide for 15-30 minutes before going to bed. Of course when reading it you have to be careful to avoid spoilers.

I'd say yes.

I purchased the hardcover. I've used it sparingly though.

I will say this, I looked up the "A Night to Remember" quest and the guide had a bit of incorrect information in it (or at least that is what seems to be that case from what I have seen online about that quest). I haven't finished the quest yet because I'm waiting for the 1.3 patch so I can't say for certain.

Anyway, the maps and general info are great.

Didn't come with a poster or something? Last game guide I bought was the Mass effect one at it came with a big-ass poster. Sweetroll!

For Collective purposes ONLY yes, UESP is free and includes (eventually) all the content and even any DLC's quests

I use mine for reference quite a bit for things like alchemy lists.

It's a big game and I don't want to miss anything. I tend not to refer to it too much for the quest walk through though.

I wish they did it in a hardback option. I have the Fallout 3 one and it's quality.

The hardcover version yes.

The reason I say this is because it comes with not only the best paper map out there but with an online interactive map that is really really good. The guide itself is great and it's the biggest guide I have ever seen. It's not set up like most guides. It's actually great reading material. Buy it.

I'm considering of getting one too, but so far, the IGN website and the wiki had been pretty useful enough. So I'm hesitating here..

No. You have the Internet. You seem to know how to use it so why pay for a hard copy of something you already have. Guides are out there. And free of cost. And any quest you one across someone will have already asked. How do I do this on yahoo answers or some other place.

I pre-ordered mine on Amazon (the hardcover) but they ran out of stock so I haven't got it yet. Mostly I wanted the map and interactive online map since I ordered the game via steam and so I didn't get a map. Plus I figure it'll make interesting reading material and I like books.

Its useful but you can pretty much find everything on the wikis. But could be a nice read if you are bored in the bathroom :P

yes but use it only when you need help the first time around to prevent spoiling the game, then when you think you have done everything in game skim through the guide to see if you missed anything.

One caution about the paper version. If you are older you might not be able to read it. Even with glasses I can't read the print. It is very small and not very dark. Even with a magnifying glass and glasses it is difficult. I wish I could read it since I already bought it.

I would imaging everything in the guide can be found on the internet.

Are any of you in the UK? I would love to buy it, but I can't find anywhere that stocks it. Gamestation came closest, they list it, but are out of stock :(

Skyrim is all about exploring and discovering the world, having a guide telling you where everything is takes the fun out of the game, and it's advice could almost certainly be found freely with a Google search.
