Is the game too easy?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 4:17 am

The game isn't too easy. As players adapt to the game it appears easier. The first character I played was horrible. An escaped convict with a .357 gave me trouble. I made another character, learning from my previous mistakes. The game seemed so much easier because I knew what weapons worked and which ones didn't. Also, as the character levels up the ability to survive should be easier. It's a given that some enemies will still present a problem though. For instance, I can't take on more than one deathclaw without sniping from far away.

As far as hardcoe mode, I hate it. I don't mind the stimpaks healing over time or the bullets having weight but the water, sleep, and food aspects irritate me. It became more of a chore to drink or eat all the time than it was rewarding. I never once ran low on food or water (or beds). The problem is that the character doesn't automatically drink and eat. Instead I have to go into my pipboy and use the food or water. It was more tedious than rewarding.

I did finish one playthrough on hardcoe mode. The rest, however, have seen me with hardcoe mode off.

I think this is the root of the problem. When Bethesda got a hold of the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system, they dumbed it down to the point that you could easily make godlike characters if you knew how to cut corners. Case in point, in Fallout 3, I never make a character with a Charisma higher than 1 because that attribute is worthless.

Obsidian has evened things out a bit, but the system is still exploitable if you know what you're doing. For those of us power gamers, it's very easy to craft a build that annihilates everything we see. So I think that's the issue right there. It doesn't have so much to do with gameplay as it does with the rules system. If you make a combat toon and you know what you're doing, life in the Wasteland isn't so bad.

Lvling is indeed ridiculously fast, way faster than FO3: Broken Steel. It takes the need to explore a bit out of the game. Also, random encounters are very limited (I miss those Talon Goons popping up out of nowhere, not even the Legion can match those idiots in frequency) so you just have to travel around like 3 days and then repeat it to get XP, with XP in FO3 being far less than in NV. None the less, if you wanna have a real treat, play very hard, cross the river and try to find some Deathclaws. If you found them, enjoy the show, it's suicide. (Alpha males can do knock down?)

With leveled enemies like FO3 you could go anywhere and enemies would always present some challenge at least.

And thus the sense of character progression vanishes.

No doubt the fixed spawns were a bit too easy in NV, but it's more of a balance issue than levelscaling issue (for a harsh example, instead of providing me with level 20 legendary alpha molerat, I rather should be provided with 20 molerats). When I do level up enough, a measly powderganger, or a coyote, or anything the like shouldn't provide a tough fight as I have grown beyond them - wether or not that makes certaing areas easy.

Anyways, the overall difficulty should be risen with much greater impact from skills and stats, and much slower leveling.

If you look again you will see i am on about the human enemies mostly!
I do find the creatures very good, obviously deathclaws which are much improved over fo3 but for me i like the "waspies" as i like to call them as they normally attack in groups and close distance on you extremley fast.

Oh, tough people. Let's see.

Reverse Pickpocket combat armor for Benny and his goons. Then reverse pickpocket actually dangerous guns into the goons.

That oughta do it...

I like the role playing aspect of everything being new and challenging during the beginning of the game. Your character grows and adapts until he/she is what you wanted it to be. Realistically things should be a bit harder in the beginning of the game considering the circumstances. You would not dare (at least I wouldn't) try to take on Caesar and his camp at level 5. But at lv 20 or so you could stand a chance.

I fell like everyone tries to make an awesome character and always succeeds. If you are looking for a challenge try to make a character that would seem destined to fail. I on the other hand am glad I am not struggling to kill many things in the wasteland. I mean come on I'm the [censored] savior of the wasteland :P

I found Deathclaws much more difficult to take out this time around, a good improvement from Fallout 3. Most of the other creatures are just annoyances though (Geckos and Cazadores especially).

I think the human enemies are too easy. They don't seem to use their items. They should use buffs, stimpacks, and pick the right weapons for the right occasions, but half the time it seems that they just run in with a melee weapon. They'd be a lot harder if their AI was better.

It's been a hell of a lot easier than Fallout 3 so far.

Too easy? Play Iron Man mode.

And traps most definitely do count.

Are you on Very Hard? But, the rate at which you level is ridiculous. I reached level 30 in half the time it took me on Fallout 3.

Yea, I agree. I leveled up 5 levels in 2 hours of gameplay. The game is easier to kill people than in FO:3. The Giant Radscorpians eat my soul though. I had 6 chasing me at one point and I couldn't even kill one. I suggest putting the level to hardcoe if it's too easy for you.

Wait hold on a sec... Am I reading the OP right here?
He finished the game but didn't notice until his second playthrough?
did you accidantely skip the end cutscene?
Did you just start a new game and assume that the start cutscene was somewhere in the middle?
Seriously this is confusing the hell out of me.

Game is indeed easy as a sniper character build with the Sniper Rifle or Anti-Material Rifle. Even on hardcoe mode.

In some ways it is to easy but Cook Cook and the other two are not. Death Claws and those cazador are murder. But I had to laugh at the hype about Bighorners. Three shoot gun blast and they were died! Even Nightstalkers are little on the easy side, I said a little. :) Other wise I find the game all right.

Yeah, it's easy if you're the sort of player who will actually do the math and build your character into a complete murder-machine with the right selection of skills and perks. But that's the reward you get for being smart enough to do that, and taking the time to do that. I get the feeling there are other players out there who pay attention to none of that and just kind of blunder their way through the character advancement process, taking whatever sounds good at the time and not planning ahead. Heck, there was a guy asking for help in these forums because he was having trouble with the final battle.
Spoiler
He was being "multi-juggled" by repeated shots from the Legionaries with Anti Materiel Rifles. Whereas I personally shot them all before they could even shoot at me.

There was another guy who was having trouble with the final boss.
Spoiler
Killing Legate Lanius, whom I personally took down with three shots before he could even close the distance to hit me with his sword.

I've also noticed multiple posts from people complaining that Deathclaws are now too hard to fight compared to the way they were in FO3.
One of these guys having trouble with the game stated that that's just the way he chooses to play - he doesn't want to take the time to plan out his character because it was no fun for him. Hey, his call. I guess they've got to build the game to appeal to as many people as possible and not just us hardcoe types who will detail everything out to get the best results.

I play on very hard hardcoe and I must say that is it just as easy or maybe even easier than fallout 3. My build is an unarmed sneak character.

I don't think they should make the game easier though, I see alot of people still having trouble on hard so I guess my fallout 3 experience helped me out alot here.
