The Life I've Lived

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 3:55 pm

Perhaps not the wisest move putting it on reddit, because it ended up being 200 comments of calling the OP a troll and asking to provide pictures of his family.
Yes, I am beginning to question my decision putting it on there. I didn't expect it to get so large. I always happened to post it in a subreddit that required I prove my identity which I'm not comfortable doing on the Internet.

People play a game, they want help or they want to discuss the game with other fans. They check out/go to a forum or whatnot. Age has nothing to do with that whatsoever. Or are you trying to imply people of a certain age don't know how to use a computer/internet? :ermm:

My 92 year old grandpa owns a SNES. He was 70 when it came out. :P

Excellent story (excellent life, it sounds like!).

People's lives will always have their ups and downs, but at the end of it, all that matters is the journey and the people we touched. That's why I try my best to be a good person, to help and make folks happy. I don't like anger, violence, or people being jerks. I just want everyone to be happy and peaceful.

I think that's all anybody can truly ask for, and that's all I really want in life anyways.

I am an American of 24 years old. My grandfather on my mother's side served in World War 2 in the 6th Cavalry division under General Patton. He fought at Normandy and other places, including the Battle of the Bulge. After WW2, he also fought in the Korean War throughout the entire duration. Retiring as a staff sergeant, he later retired as a nurse for the state. He had 2 sons and 4 daughters with his wife and lived to be 96 years old before passing away 3 years ago. My grandmother is still with us, and I see her almost every other day. That whole generation harbors the most respectable human beings I have ever encountered.
I can only hope to live my life with similar honor. It is the measurement to go by in this new world.
Your post is very inspirational. Thank you for sharing.

Wow, you've lived a fantastic life, this could be movie material really. I hope I get to live a life as full as yours. Your children also sound like great people.

If you wrote an autobiography, I'd definitely read it.

Not trying to be rude or anything but how does an 82 year old end up on a video game forum?
If you actually read the story. He started playing Arena too help with depression, then moved on from there.

I have actually, before I went into teaching I considered being a writer but my parents wanted me to do something more practical, so I did. But when they were younger, I wrote stories for my grandchildren. Mostly fantasy with them as the hero. They loved it. I have also considered writing and autobiography too. But I'd have to find someone willing to publish it.

I'll have your passage posted on my blog.

If you considered publishing, check out https://www.createspace.com/, it's organized by Amazon.com.

@Others- To be honest, on the assumption Grandad's topic IS just copy pasted, or a troll post. It's not going 'lulz dem fagets', being racist, or anything. It's a heart jerking and thought reflecting post. He isn't asking us for money, or attention, or his life to be a major motion picture. He just wanted to share his life with us. Even if OP is actually just posting this and claiming it as his own, what does it matter? It's a thought provoking post. As for Reddit, Reddit more filled with hate than.....a certian other website we aren't allowed to mention.

This. Whether or not it's true, the story is good, and inspiring.

I'm sceptical that your story is actually true, but it's still a good story. :)

If you are telling the truth, have you ever been to Emerald, Queensland, seeing as you've lived around that area.

I've never been to Emerald. I've only lived in Townsville, Bundaberg and Brisbane and visited Cairns, Melbourne and Toowoomba.

Sir,
Thank you for the post and sharing a part of your life!

Something I think about is tradition: what traditions do I have that came from my parents, and what traditions am I passing on or will my kids pick-up? Would you be willing to share your thoughts about "tradition"?

Thanks,
rumbly

By making smart choices and not growing up

To those who are skeptical, I ask this rhetorical questions:
How does the opening post affect you? Why does it matter?

Love your signature too, by the way.

This.

Very humbling post, and a great read into what's important in life. Honestly, if I make it to 82 and have achieved even half of what you have (with regards to family especially), I be extremely proud of myself

EDIT:

Something I think about is tradition: what traditions do I have that came from my parents, and what traditions am I passing on or will my kids pick-up? Would you be willing to share your thoughts about "tradition"?

I think about the same things, and I'm 20 with no kids. Along with traditions (our family have a lot, and most of them I want to keep alive into the next generation of us), I think about principles as well. I was raised with principles (good ones, I think) and I see so many kids growing up now that haven't been. I think that lacking principles has a detrimental effect on who we are...and I'm keen to pass that onto my children, when I have them. Maybe it's just me, but I feel that a man without principles is just a shell of what he could be.

Thank you for posting this. I'm a little soft so naturally I had tears streaming down my face. I very much appreciate you sharing your story. I made the mistake of looking at the Reddit post.. people are just awful sometimes. Most of what was said isn't justified even if your post is fiction. In either case, I'm sorry for those comments. Your story is very thought provoking, especially to one so young who has lived through a lot, though in a very different way. I wish you the best.

Really enjoyed reading this. Thank you for sharing.

And thank you for reminding me that I need to get back to learning the Korean alphabet. Those complex vowels aren't going to learn themselves!

Have a great weekend :)

Nice story though I'm not sure I believe it, particularly if this is actually the case:

"Blue eyes are recessive; the kids could only get blue eyes if their mother also carried the blue-eye gene, which in Korea at that time is hella unlikely."

It's not impossible. I know a few asian and black people (I have no idea what is correct to say anymore) who have green or blue eyes. I honestly think it isn't so noticeable in Asian cultures mostly because you tend to see those with a lineage of mostly or entirely Asian blood, be it Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, etc. If the father (OP) has the bb trait, there's a chance the offspring can have blue eyes (if I remember correctly). It's very possible the mother can carry the gene, it's just not very likely. Mutations can also occur, of course.

Blue and green eyes are possible in Asians, there was plenty of mixing of that recessive gene from European explorers.

I loved your story, OP, very touching, hope to live a life as full as yours :)
