The Mojave Wasteland

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 2:58 pm

You know

I rly like new vegas, and i definitely agree that it lived up to the hype and mostly everyones expectations

but i have to say theres one thing that rly kills the games atmosphere and leaves the game almost lifeless..

The Wasteland

It (literally) is a wasteland, with most areas being empty with no spawning of monsters/enemies and traversing across the map gets to be mega boring. (Cant even get legion/NCR to send assassins after me most factions svck but thats another complaint for another day).

Hell even my mom who dosent rly like videogames; whilst watching me play today, even agreed that the game felt boring and she almost fell asleep watching me play

That to me rly ticks me off and like some people on here, i feel compelled to go back to FO3 because of the random encounters and not so desolate wasteland.

I also think that the DLC that'll be releasing soon will not solve this problem unless it's adding the random encounter system from FO3: this game i dont see me enjoying long, but aside from that, it's a good game. Not GOTY material but a good game nonetheless.

In my opinion the capitol wasteland was better. Mainly because the atmosphere felt better, other than that the Mojave wasteland was superior.

The feeling that im not alone :unsure2:

FO3 did it right with all the dangerous creatures and raider gangs that sprawled all across the wasteland

but in NV if you were to say walk from Novac all the way to 188 trading post, all you will encounter are a small pocket of vipers and maybe(if lucky) some cazadores but i wouldnt consider that lucky lol. No sense of danger at all rly.

I miss the supermutants aswell you can only find them in blackmoutain though they do attack in large numbers, still dosent come close to entering the D.C ruins and fended off against SM's with misslelaunchers and assault rifles.

only enemy that ive come across that weilds misslelaunchers are boomers and hopefully you wont piss them off because they will shoot you upclose right in the fkn face.

The Fallout 3 wasteland was better.

Tru Dat

the unscripted patrols/caravan traders and random attacks rly made the wasteland interesting. And then later-on enclave sets up security encampments guarded by powerarmoured brutes and unleash mild controlled deathclaws that tear yo ass to pieces lol.

Yes I sure miss running into odd radscorpions or Protectrons littered randomly across the game world. /sarcasm

No thanks, the Mojave feels much more logical in how animals and tribes have their own territories. It's not hard to find action in this game, it's just that you're not assaulted by non-challenging enemies everywhere you go.

That's your opinion. While I'm not saying the Mojave wasteland wasn't good, In fact it was great, But I didn't like it as much. I didn't like the fact that it seemed most buildings i came across were boarded/inaccessible.

The Fallout 3 wasteland was better.

Not really, an enemy every thirty meters and a dungeon every 50 meters.
The Mojave Wasteland feels more real.
There shouldn't be an overabundance of enemies.
Sure the pacing is a little more slower but being a fan of the old games I can say that slow pacing ain't really a problem for me.

I will say that there are more populated settlements in FO3; which only had 2 and a couple towns that may had 5 npcs to interact with.

but thats no excuse to get rid of random encounters, and leave parts of the mojave empty.

I mean it's not that i havent tried either. I've done everything i could to piss off CL and NCR so they would send assassins after me so i could atleast roleplay that sense of endangerment of having a crazy warlord sic his hounds on me for killing one of his best guys( vulpes in[censored]a.

That i can agree with, in my opinion the only reason the capitol wasteland was better was because of the atmosphere.

Once again, if my post's aren't making alot of sense i apologize.

Why?
most side quests are mainly for factions and like you said the factions are boring

Storywise, the Mojave wasteland is more "tamed". It actually feels like 200 years after the war, people have begun progressing instead of just surviving. There are still dangerous places, but the humans mostly manage to keep the monsters and mutants away from areas they commonly operate in.

Gameplay wise, i agree. It's a big snooze

the sidequest that ive completed so far have been repeats(of going here and killing these people/deliver message, but a couple of them are unique.

I didnt say i hated the factions but other then having rep and being able to disguise yourself like them, theyre not that much different then reilys rangers or some other small faction. Not to mention once you kill them theyre gone for good and wont respawn.

Id say the only faction that rly counts is powder gangers because they wander around in the wasteland, unlike khans and kings.

I dont even think rep shouldve been added for the minor-factions; seeing as they wont send out hitsquads to avenge their mates deaths.

The only changes I'd make to the Mojave wasteland is to put a few more trader caravans, NCR patrols and CL patrols (each in their own area), out on the roads. Other than that, the Mojave in FONV is pretty much the way it is in real life. You could put wild dog or coyote packs running around, but really? After level 6 or 7, depending on your weapons and followers, they'd be an annoyance more then anything else. LOL after level 10 most wandering small raider-type groups are nothing more then an annoyance. :gun: :ahhh: :ahhh: :ahhh:
One thing can be said, in hardcoe mode the lack of action in the wastes can kill you by itself. No food or water sources unless you kill something for it.

You'd still have to prefer the FO3 wasteland then it was definitley of higher quality as well
F:NV's selling points for me are it's gameplay mechanics, Story, amount of quests and better voice acting/dialogue, Not it's 'wasteland', but that's just me

I love that you can go for ages without seeing much in terms of enemies, then all of a sudden there'll be a swarm which is a genuine challenge to beat - much more fun (and more realistic, IMO) than one random robot wandering about for no apparent reason.

Maybe if you actually had to eat more often than once a week, but since it never takes that long to travel to another town which has a water tower and a food merchant that isn't an issue. Besides i have enough water in my inventory to turn Mojave into Miami. Money isn't a problem either, you still need S/S Bottlecap to survive the cash pool. Atleast there are some damn expensive items to use all that money on now.

softcoe mode was a nice try, but way too forgiving.

Personally, I love the Mojave. I could never stand playing FO3 too long because I got depressed from the damn atmosphere people keep talking about like an 80's world cup victory. Don't get me wrong, I must have something like 500 hours in FO3, but if I could avoid the atmosphere, I would. I love the sunny weather, the scary moments and airy, light atmosphere in NV.

I have to agree with this. A fight only occasionally is better than nigh constant brawling. The combat situations feel much more welcome and refreshing when the player is not overfed with them.
