Am I the only one who doesn't gamble?

I think it's completely weird that some people talk about "I don't go to casinos in real life, therefore I'm not interested in them in Fallout: New Vegas". You know, in real life, I don't like to go down into cramped underground installations and caves filled with giant rats, zombies, and swarming wolflike abominations that can kill you in 2 seconds (nightstalkers), armed with only a 150 pound pneumatic sledgehammer - yet in F:NV it's really fun.

And if allowing the computer to randomly determine an outcome (such as the fall of a roulette ball) for in-game gains is gambling, then everyone who plays F:NV is a gambler. Every time you go into VATS and see a % chance to hit, you're gambling. Every time you walk across an area where you might have a random encounter, you're gambling. The only significant difference is that the casino stuff has the trappings of real-world gambling.

--------------
That said, I don't do the actual gambling minigames too much in F:NV.

I have one character who I role-played as a savage ex-raider. She was only really interested in killing and plundering. No interest whatsoever into learning the rules of some "game". She never gambled at all.

I have a social character with a 10 LK who enjoyed the slots for a couple minutes before she was banned from every casino. (The Ultra-Luxe took longer; they don't have slots that I could find.)

I have a wandering gunslinger who is also a sharp Caravan player. He's a bit too dusty and road-hardened (and unlucky) to play those fancy casino games though.

--------------
As for the gameplay: long story short, I like Caravan, I like the slot machines, Blackjack is kinda boring and Roulette really svcks.

Caravan is really fun when you get into it. I've read that you can totally ruin it for yourself by building the "perfect deck" of only 10s, 9s, and 7s, but come on, how boring is that. I build my deck with every card I have available. Makes it so I actually have to think with every play and I can even lose once in a while. I love the rule structure (except the loophole for building cheese decks) and it's a very engaging game. My gunslinger plays it at every opportunity. I do wish you could watch your opponent while you played like in Dead Rising 2. Playing cards in DR2 was awesome just for that even though it played kinda slow.

Slot machines are fun in the same way that real slot machines are fun I guess, except in real life I don't have 10 LK. Without that certainty of the big payouts coming, pretty boring. Decent interface though.

Blackjack is pretty dull and slow paced. Would be a lot more visually interesting if you could at least see the dealer instead of a flat tabletop with ghost cards floating around.

Roulette is horrible. Having all my bets pulled off the table after each spin and having to tap 40 keys to bet again and spin again is really just awful design. A terrible chore to wade through and no visual excitement here either. I want to get that 10 spins achievement, but god, it's going to be something I just want to get over with rather than something fun to do in the game.

I wonder if there's anyone else like me who just doesn't gamble in the game - I don't do it IRL (don't worry, I'm not squeaky clean, there are other less costly vices!) and I just don't feel any urge to gamble in New Vegas either. I'm on my 3rd character and don't even know how Caravan works, and never been great at blackjack - card games, slots, and roulette just don't float my boat... I can't be the only one, so if there's anyone else like me please own up and keep me company!!!! :D The neon lights in Vegas sure are pretty though :D

I don't gamble much myself.

I only have 2 points in luck so i wouldn't be very good at gambling.

Don't be afraid of Caravan; it's 100% skill.

Did'nt gamble on my first char (nearly 75 hours spend on that one) but on my second one i was to impatient to go though quests to get to level 30 from level 4 so i did the vault 11 glitch then spent what little i had on the luck implant and naughty nightwear (adds 10 to speech and 1 to luck) and went from 6 luck to 8 and got banned from the Tops and Ultra-Lux about an hour later with enough caps to get the ammo, armor and weapons i'd normally get after 40+ hours of fair play, might go back later and get banned from the rest of the casinos just for the trophy.

I initially gambled to get the achievements, but since I boosted my luck to 10, I go play blackjack or slots to make some easy caps. Still have not been banned but they interrupt me to get me off my streak.

Luck 8. I enter Atomic Wrangrel, play some Blackjack closing to the 5k limit of theirs, I decide to go and spin at the slots one final time. I spin ONE TIME. Hit 3x graqe = 16 000 cash. I look top right corner for "you feel lucky" - it isn't there so it wasn't a luck roll but a normal chance roll. Anyone bored enough to count the odds?

I got banned from my favourite dump. :-|

I occasionally win money playing in free online poker tournaments then using that money to enter extremely low stakes tournaments, and that is the extent of my gambling.... but I do not care for gambling in video games. The tournaments can last over 10 hours and by that time I am in position to receive money no matter what and too bored to continue so I lose on purpose.

Nope.. not really a gambler in real life.. In games I just see it as a cheat to make money. Save, reload.. if I win I save.. if I lose I reload. Not as time consuming as you would think. In real life the most I've ever gambled has been 15 dollars on a slot machine.. I won 20 with my first pull.. Put my original 15 away and won 50 more dollars over the rest of the evening.. I was just there with a friend who played with $2000 at video poker. He left with 3000.. but he could of at one point walked away with 6000. It's always good to know when to stop playing I guess is the moral of the story.

I don't gamble either. I might have done it like ones just to try it, but I didin′t get all of it so, and caravan I don't have the patience to learn. Maybe when I′ve played the game so many times it′s starting to get boring, I may consider to learn, but right now there are better things to do! :shifty:

In reality it takes a LONG time to amass a fortune from nothing through gambling, because your cash pool will fluctuate dramatically due to the odds of winning alone.

Some quest character gave me chips to some casino.

I clicked on the slot machine thingie for a while.

In the end I think I was at like 10 chips fewer than when I started when I figured it was time to go find something normal to do in the game.

that's the extent of my own experience with it ...

WTH not, you're in Vegas? Especially if you took the luck implant or have 7+ luck, you'll clean the casinos out. Got banned by 3 of them in one day by winning more than 15K caps overall. Start out on blackjack with small bets, start throwing bigger bets for bigger payouts, clean out the dealer, then move onto slots. You can start with bigger bets with your winnings and probability is on your side with the slot machines, you'll eventually jackpot. That's how I won 38,880 caps from a slot machine in Gomorrah! >:) I was dropping 200 cap max bets and luck kicked in, then I got the max jackpot. The gangster pit boss quickly said I wasn't welcome on his floor, but said everything else was up for grabs...

"Okay, stay in your crappy lunar lander, I'll get my own lunar lander. With hokers and blackjack, on second thought, forget the blackjack!"

I would gamble but I think it would be a waste of time I mean I already have 85,000 caps and counting.
