Am i the only one who just plays?

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 8:59 pm

I do play it the way I want to, im not choosing perks and name and backround and character builds before I even get the game, the only thing I have decided is that im gonna be a Nord, nothing else, then I just play it the way I want

Roleplaying, to me, is a simulation, on a small scale, of life itself. As a person, I have started my life with certain characteristics. But I cannot plan what happens to me as I go through life. So I put a lot of time into creating my characters (over a month, sometimes). But once that character is created and in the game I let him or her take over. I have no more idea what is going to happen to that character tomorrow than I know what is going to happen to me tomorrow. And that is roleplaying to me.

I just play the game as the OP does.

When playing an electronic game, it's jsut a game: something to beat. There's something about electronic games that keeps me from roleplaying. Probably the fact that I can't chuck dice at my idiot friend across the table who had his character try and pickpocket a dragon and got the entire party charred all nice and crispy ;) But really, I can't partake in spantanious dialogue nor become the character.

I feel like I'm the only one here who is just gonna play the game because it's a game. It seems there are a lot of people here who worry about it being immersive enough. It's fine if you wanna do that, but sometimes people take it too far and yell at Bethesda for not making it even more immersive. I think part of the fun in playing it "realistically" is by making up ways around some of the game mechanics that make it seem like just a game and it allows the player to be creative. But for me I'm just gonna have fun :jammasterjay:

All that other fiction is just that. Fiction, it never happend, I'm not sure why people like to pretend it did.

I do whatever is in the game and leave all the fake stuff out of it.

RP is for the deprived.

I rmemeber reading about people upset because they wouldn't be able to RP a weak knight due to the new leveling system. Ridiculous.

The games fiction too you know.
Not sure why it seems more real to you because Bethesda created it rather than you using your own imagination.

Its come to my attention how everyone here plans out their characters history, their classes and triumphs. If its going to be a mage, assassin, thief or a warrior. but now when i realize there are no classes im just going to do what i want and when I want, if I want to use a fire spell im going to use it, if i wanna get someone who's far im gonna use a bow, if im up for damage im gonna go for a battle axe. I dont choose what I am, I just play the game! and i have fun while im doing it. I play with no restrictions and i feel more like a free person while im doing it, making a history for your character doesnt make him any different from all the other characters other people are playing, we're all dovakhiin and we're all going to try to stop alduin whether we like it or not. And at the end when i have an awesome all rounder character, I have more stuff I can do then a warrior who doesnt know any magic skills but has mastered one handed. so what about you guys? you with me or do you think its necessary for you to make your characters history in order to properly roll-play.

P.S im not talking derp about guys who do all these things, its just that I, imo, dont think its necessary.
The problem with your playstyle is that your character will end up schizophrenic. Doing good and evil things without reason. That makes him feel not real.

Guess I've been playing too much WoW/Rift, and really like my character to be the best it can be (go Air Force, ooops). Min/Maxing still does it for me.

Don't forget, there are 240 perks in the game, that will impact your character. If you want to be stronger in, let's say mage area, you need to put your perks there. So, just running around and not doing a solid build will definitely impact your character's strength (meaning what he'll/she'll be, i.e., mage, warrior, etc.)

You'll be a jack of all trades but a master of none.

I dont worry about a backstory or anything but I like to think of the character as myself. What decision would i make if that was me? where would i go? what would I do? Would I really just walk into that town and start stealing /robbing people.....only if no ones looking maybe haha.

I mean to me, I love roleplaying I might not be very good at it but if im playing alone and I'm having fun I don't care. That's why bethesda makes the game the way they do so that it appeals to all sorts not just hardcoe rp'ers. I used to think they had dumbed down the game but now I realise there is a difference between streamlining and dumbing down (dragon age 2 anyone?) Anyways only three days to go hang in there folks!

For me it's about replay value.

Even when I try to max everything out on a single character, there are still a set of skills that I fall back to as my default choices for that character. I prefer to let that character be its class/archetype/what-have-you ... and then play the game again later with a different character and a different set of skills. That way I experience the game's content multiple times, and many times in different ways.

Brute forcing my way through a dungeon as a bloodthirsty Nord, carrying a torch is different experience than crawling through it as a Khajit assassin using night-eye.

Most I plan is the general stuff - basic playstyle the character will be, race, gender. I'm not a writer - I've never written long stories just for the fun of it. So trying to come up with some narrative for who my character is, and what their motivations are.... meh, not interesting. That's not what I play games for.

(In pen-and-paper games, it's kind of like the difference between "role" playing and "roll" playing - are you more interested in doing improv acting and speaking "in character", or are you more interested in the strategy, rules, and game system. And, of course, there are people all along the continuum between the two extremes.)

In the case of Skyrim, I'm not even sure yet what combat style I want my stealth/melee character to go with - need to try out the options in the new combat system to see what "feels" good. So all I've got planned so far is "Female. Probably Imperial. Melee/stealth." I'll figure out the name once I'm staring at the face I've come up with in the character creator. :)

I play with what the game gives me.

If I find lots of good bows, I'll just use bows.

If I find a super sixy sword that lops heads off nice and easy, I'll stick to melee with that sword.

If spells are working, I'll just use them.

I take whatever the game engine gives me and play with that. I don't try to force something to work that just doesn't feel right to me, even if I would LIKE it to. I find that trying to do stuff my way usually doesn't work out. So I just go with the flow.

I have to plan man, that's just how I play these types of games, and save alot cause I don't want to invest 50+ hours then find out there is a much better option to take. Especially with work and the wife ballin to go out every time I'm free.

as much as i love RPG's, i don't role play my toon with a backstory etc, i also 'just play the game' :)

Your not the only one. I don't role play fictitious characters. I play in first person exclusively because it's through my eyes that I see the world. I pick a direction and let the world itself shape my adventure. So much so that in MW(start), OB and FO3 I have yet to complete the main quest and I have 4000+ hrs collectively in those games.

I just kind of get an image in my head of what I want my character to be. Then I build around that idea.

I've never RP'd in a video game, but I think I'm going to take a stab at it this time. Not that I'm going to let that completely constrain my in-game behavior (as some do), but I just want to have a sense of the person, to help me with their initial creation. I'm hoping this will make character creation a more satisfying process this time around. I don't just want to blunder into it.

If I am really looking forward to a game, the closer it gets to release the more I'll plan out what I want to do. And if I really LOVE!!!! the game when I'm not playing it I'll write notes of things I want to do, things I plan on doing, and things that need to be done.

I did that with FFXI while I was going through Basic Training, kept what I called my "FFXI Book", listed all the Jobs I was leveling before I left, places I was going to farm, mobs I needed to get revenge on etc...
