Well main reason why I'm going to wait on buying New Vegas is mostly because I want to complete FALLOUT 1 & 2 from the FALLOUT Trilogy DVD-ROM. Can't believe I missed out on these two when I was a teenager. Both are set around the same area so might as well, y'know?
Guessing if I do that, New Vegas will be more rewarding to myself. Also mildly hesitant due to the obvious DLC/add-ons, of course. Slightly disappointing the New Vegas subtitle for the title logo wasn't very "neon" themed.
I'm not very picky anyway. Can't wait to get it when I complete those two particular goals for myself. hardcoe mode? Should've been named Survivalist mode actually. No matter I'll attempt it.

I'd love to have your dedication, because I could never do such a thing. I should get round to playing the original Fallouts, and I keep kicking myself for not ordering it the day before, but I don't think I'd be able to put off NV until I've completed both of them, as I imagine there's a hell of a lot of content there!

Fallout 1 and 2 can be completed in a month or two (and that's if you REALLY take your time) so, I don't understand why you wouldn't get some pre-order bonuses and get the game on release unless you absolutely don't have the time to finish them in that time period.

If I were you I would play New Vegas when it releases and switch between the originals and it if you get bored with either.

The first games are definatly worth the play through I got them in 2001-2 and had been hoping for Fo3 since then even checked out the Fo3 Van Buren that was leaked after cancellation. I think any Fallout fan HAS to play these games (though not Van Buren unless your interested lol) both because they're good and because they're fallout, they still hold up very very well and still 2 of my favourite games but they do take LONG time.

You should however get New Vegas on release for pre-order goodies if you want that or just becaue it's good (hopefully) and as suggested above switch between them or rotate which one you play to avoid boredom or have some change.

Admittedly, i only became a fallout fan after playing fallout 3. Having never even heard of fallout before. So im kind of a late joiner. However, that doenst mean im not a fallout fan. I tried playing the other two ( like you ) but didn't enjoy then at all. I guess there just too outdated for someone like me who is used to all the high definition and graphical games. So, meh. Goodluck, but if your only playing them to enhance your fallout NV experience you might be disappointed.

You've got three months. That oughtta be plenty of time to get the main storyline of the first two games down.

As for me...well I kinda tried 'em and I've gotten maybe 30 minutes into either of them. The isometric view and clunky 1998 interface is why I can't finish them.

Oh I'm of the age where I'm kicking myself in the pants as to why I've never played Fallout 1 or 2 when they were first released. Playing it more for the backstory and to actually play the games. Tactics I can take or leave since it was on the FALLOUT Trilogy DVD-ROM.
I've been alternating between the two while having breaks from the remaining FO3 DLC I'm finally now playing. Glad I'm a retro gamer too and can appreciate alot of games which were released when I was a teenager and more.

If your into the old school RPG's your in for a treat.
I started on fallout 3 myself and also somehow missed the earlier titles growing up, but let me tell you, if you can look past the dated graphics you will see that FO1 and 2 are masterpieces, so much so that after playing them for an extended period of time my whole view of fallout 3 has been altered to the point that i have trouble really enjoying it (at least without mods) because it just seems to be missing something the originals had, i just cant quite put my finger on what it is.

Anyway like i said, if you enjoy the old rpg's you will most likely enjoy the original fallout games very much, take your time playing them, they are very worthwhile.

the reason i wont get the game right off the bat is because i played FO3 on PS3 and i have 2 friends that played it on PC and said it was way better on it. so im going to wait until i get a new monitor (52 inch LCD screen) for my computer (im pretty sure my comp will run it on high settings) and a gaming mouse and key board. i don't really see anything special about the preorder packs so im not all that big in a hurry to buy it.

I actually don't mind the "dated graphics" especially since I'm 31. I even own Westwood Studios 1997 BLADE RUNNER video game.
When it comes to modding FO3 when I do eventually buy it for PC, I'm entirely sticking with those which keep the alternate timeline, lore-suitable feel to the game. Mostly just higher resolution textures for pre-existing items and then working from there. Especially the 100 more old timey songs for GNR is more my taste for a mod.

I don't have any personal deadline to buy New Vegas. I'll buy it when I damn well want to thank you kindly.

Not sure if im reading your post right but you seem a little defensive, it isnt really necessary since i wasnt having a go at you in the slightest, and many on these forums would indeed call fallout graphics 'dated', and by todays standards they're probably right, dont get me wrong though they are fine, i myself grew up on doom and warcraft.

Anyway like i was saying in my previous post, enjoy fallout 1 and 2 they're great.

First off 52 inch? WTF? Also, post your computer specs, I'll tell you if it can or can't play it.

You really aren't gaining anything from playing those before New Vegas. Hell, you could read through the Let's Plays over at the LP Archives and enjoy some humorous player journals (Fallout 2 is done with 1 INT), and get just as much satisfaction.

I got introduced into the series through fallout 3. Took my 2 weeks to beat both F1 and F2 (most of that time was spent on F2). I cringe whenever people say Fallout 2 is a masterpeice.

Fallout 1 was a masterpiece. Fallout 2 was Fallout 1 with area sprawl, half-hearted additions, too many pop culture references and nonsensical themes (tribal for ex.)

That's the same for me as well. Back in my younger days, I do recall my friend and I loading up Fallout on his computer. And I'm trying to remember how many colours it was... I'm thinking 256? We were pretty happy with that cause it was looking a lot better than Wasteland!! Although Wasteland was pretty cool, but I don't remember it much. Except for something along the lines of reading the red mist or fine paste sort of thing! lol Actually even when FO3 came out, for some reason because of how it was advertised I assumed that it was more FPS than anything. So I actually avoided it for a while, until a friend of mine who owned it said it wasn't. I rented it first to give it a try... and I was immediately hooked!! Needless to say I went out and bought it right away.

To the OP... I don't think I'd be able to sit through playing F1 and 2, although it would grant me a lot of background story in the series. I'm just going to piece together any background bits that appear in New Vegas and hope they make sense to me!



Whoa.... do you literally mean a 52 inch MONITOR? I can completely understand running that on a TV, and sitting on your sofa. Is that the kind of setup you're going for? If you're using that solely for your computer, how close will you be sitting? Also, if you're going that route.... I'd 100% recommend that you go LED.

That sums up about a good couple of peoples experiences with Fallout 2. You play until the game decides you are not worthy to continue forward.

It's not that I don't want to, it's just that I can't seem to progress very far on my skill set. That's what I get for specializing on non-combat skills off the bat I guess. :shakehead:

yea im not a Fallout 2 guy really myself either. way way too tongue and cheek. I would say Fallout 3 is my favorite, followed very closely by 1, and waaaay in last is 2.

Make sure to read the manual, get the unofficial patches you need (widescreen, killap's). If you need some help building a character, look up Per Jorner's walkthrough for either game (though it contains massive spoilers so try not to become reliant). Don't listen to Listerman, he's just bitter about Fallout 1 and 2 for some reason, and most of all, have fun.
