The real Trolls of Skyrim

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 2:31 pm

I was happily minding my own business one day, leisurely strolling toward my next weary victim. I am a member of a secret society dealing in blood....(cough) hail sithis (cough. But out of nowhere a frost dragon appears. Being a level 47 I am not impressed by the dragon's attack. But I soon realize that the giant earthquake behind me is not my companion doing a jumping jack, it is an ancient dragon. Again i am not impressed by this dragon's attack. I only wonder why Skyrim decides to keep hitting me with random dragon attacks even after I have found everything requiring their special item,

the soul
. I have concluded that dragon's have become the ultimate trolls in this game, and not the health regenerating kind.

I start this topic as a place where you can share any unusual or just plane stupid dragon encounters in the game. Or just a safe haven to rage against Skyrim's most annoying beast.

One time I was fighting a Dragon on a cliff and the r e t a r d decided that he was going to do a crash landing into the face of the cliff. Well, he did, and when he got himself stuck there I was forced to finish him off with my (at the time) puny level 13 arrows. And when I finally killed him, he went sliding down the mountain I had spent so much time climbing, forcing me to run back down after him to collect his soul.

*sigh*

So I'll skip the obvious comment re: the "real trolls of Skyrim".

Why wouldn't there still be random dragon attacks?

Nothing I've come across in the game indicates that all dragons just disappeared after their top dog bought the farm.

Dragons ain't much of a Troll tbh... Giants are though!

Spoiler
I was escorting Delphine and Esbern to Alduin's Wall; was playing a game without fast traveling.. Well.. We got into a fight with two Giants and I decided to let them fight and sadly, the two giants manage to do their finish move and both Delphine and Esbern went to space... I killed the giants but couldn't find them and the only way I manage to get them back with me, and continue the main quest, if I were to.... Fast Travel...

That's not what he said. He said he doesn't know why the game keeps throwing random dragons after him since he no longer has a use for their souls (ie he's already unlocked all of the shouts).

I was traveling to Alftland when I hear a strange noise. I look up to find a dragon skeleton falling from the sky. The carcass landed directly on top of me, killing me in the process...

I personally like Dragon Battles. I never get tired of them. Bethesda's Dragons is prolly one of the ton 5 best dragons I've seen in games.

Yes, I realize that but the "soul" reason for a dragon's existence in the world of Skyrim isn't ... at least from the dragon's perspective ... just to provide our hero with their soul.

So within the Skyrim "reality", dragons wouldn't just off themselves and disappear because our hero has no further need of their souls.

Just my opinion.

I had a funny one the other day when while going down a road, I had the "soul absorption" thing happen out of nowhere.

I assume a dragon had been killed by something other than myself in the general area and lay there until I just happened to wander by.

Never did find the bones though.

It was night in the Rift and a Dragon attacked as I was exploring and gathering Luna Moth wings and Cannis Root. I launched several good shots from my Ebony Bow of Flames in the general direction of the Dragon. It was dark, so I could not really see exactly where he was, but used the red dot on my compass. The attack hit the mark and he went down somewhere, but I could not find his body. (I did not have the Detect Dead Spell, yet.) So I am resigned to not collecting that soul, and as I wander on, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, comes his soul! It a pleasant surprise.

My dragons act like their drunk or something. They fight for a bit, then get distracted, then fight then fly away. I mean really. I used to be afraid when I heard the roar, now I'm just like "Oh great... let's see how many times I have to coax this thing into landing before it dies."

I love a good dragon fight, but they seem to be the exception, not the norm. I had an epic duel with one where we were dodging in and out of a ruined tower. He poked his head in and scorched, me, I ran arround back. He flew up top, I healed and attacked, he blocked the trap door. I tried to jump off, but got stuck... it went on for a while, but it was all combat, no waiting.

Anybody notice anything different about dragon behavior since 1.4?

I've noticed on a few occasions that after a bit of a fight ... while they still have plenty of life left ... , some just land and sit there apparently waiting to be killed.

Can't remember this happening before but, maybe I just didn't notice.

Random encounter dragons seems to have disappeared from my game, so as of late I have no stories to share :(

This is exactly how all my dragon attacks have been since completing the main quest. They all attack at inappropriate times. For example, during a quest, the college of winterhold, inside cities, while talking outdoors to non-essential NPC's. There needs to be a console patch where bethesda allows the player to turn off dragon attacks. I know many people will shun me for this but enough is enough. That is my opinion.

Just today I was attacked by a dragon in Riften, then traveled to Solitude and was attacked by another ancient dragon. Ridiculous

Oh you're going to love this one:

So, I killed Vilkas by means of the Blade of Sacrifice at Boethiah's Shrine (Ebony Mail). I eventually say hey, don't want Farkas to be lonely so I take him on a quest with me to go get Mehrunes' Razor. HOPING the Dremora would beat the crap out of him and kill him for me. NOPE. Soon as they down him they come after me immediately.

Then guess who decides to pop into the party at this very moment? A Blood Dragon with Frost Attacks. Like seriously?

Bad enough I'm dealing with 2 Dremora (on Master) pretty much by myself, you gotta come into the mix as well? Hit the Dragon with Marked for Death and eventually he just died from that while I focused on the Dremora's. It was PREEEETY hectic to say the least.

Trying to fight a Dragon and 2 Dremora on top a lil mountain top with almost no room to move. Lol.

This one is pretty good. I was walking near the sulfur pools and came across a giant frantically protecting his mammoth against a frost dragon. I stand by just to watch what happens. Suddenly they both stop and look in my direction, I must have gotten too close. The both ignore their deadly squabble and attack me. Me being a level 7 I decide to turn and run screaming back to Riften. Nobody in town believed me

Had an interesting fight last night with the dragon who sleeps on the word wall east of Azura's Shrine. He happened to be out and about, so I decided to go over to his perch and collect the word while he was barbequing mountain goats for lunch; he spotted me and flew back to deal with the intruder, which started a hit-and-run fight at the stone 'bridge' near the wall.

I was unable to force him to land for almost the entire fight, so exchanged arrow shots with his breath attacks while using the 'bridge' for cover so I could heal back the damage. He eventually does land, but somehow ends up doing so sideways, which gets him wedged into the rocks on either end of the 'bridge', which gives me free shots at his flank. Naturally, that gets him killed, and gives me his soul and body parts for later use, however after his 'skin' burns off the skeleton is revealed to not actually be caught in the rocks. Seems their hit box is bigger than the actual space they occupy.

Just never do the main quest. Don't start the main quest, don't have to deal with dragons.

Personally, I don't mind dragons too much. They make for some funny situations. Like, I was fighting a necromancer on a cliff side, and I almost killed it when a dragon lands behind the poor guy, chews on him and throws him off the cliff.

I had a dead Dragon spawn in Riften when I entered and it was clipped into a building.

Dragons tend to pick the most inappropriate times to attack.
Recently, I was in Morthal, and taking a bath in the water, so my character wasn't clothed or armed. I'm standing there, minding my own business, when I hear a sudden roar. I'm still quite low level, Lydia is hanging about inisde the inn, and this is my first dragon after Mirmulnir, so it's pretty daunting. To add to this, I decide to up the ante and play 'realistically'. Figuring I wouldn't have time to dress and arm myself, I just throw on some barclothes and grab my bow and arrows and head off to fight the thing (barefeet and all)!
Luckily, a guard tanks the dragon for me, and incredibly lives to tell the tale. The dragon goes down, I take it's soul and the townspeople come to oogle the corpse.
But I guess the dragon wanted more screen time, because later, after seeing the Jarl, it decides to show up again:

The mob are outraged at the though of vampires, but seem completely unconcerned about dragon skeletons falling out of the sky.

It didn't spawn. You prolly killed it earlier in the game and it hadn't "clean up" yet. Dead Dragons takes the longest to "clean up", I think?

Take a look on cover of the box your game disk game in. Then ask yourself why your complaining about a game full of dragons when you bought it knowing thats what its full of. Its a bit like buying an F1 game then saying you dont like all these F1 cars in your game why have the devs done this to me.

No, this happens to me too. On my first play through it started happening in Solitude: if I exited a building, a dragon would collapse onto the ground ragdoll style and writhe/twitch around a bit before going still. You could completely walk through it, just like a dragon skeleton, and the game would still show its name and let you search its body although it'd be empty. In my second play through, I had a dragon randomly fall to the ground behind me, it died and gave me its soul/body loot and so I thought it just maybe, I dunno, crashed. Anyway, since then I've had an identical dragon pop up in certain places twitching and jittering around just like in Solitude - as TME said, they're sometimes stuck between walls too.
