I don't blame ya, to be honest. There have been numerous things where it looked like a bug, but it wasn't (i.e. Scripted dragon not giving soul=design choice to prevent farming souls)

Yay, problem solved.

And yeah, there are a few areas in the game where it is... murky... at the best of times.
