the thread of science

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 1:37 am

I thought it would be a good idea to make a thread for the science geeks out there that want to discuss theories, people wanting to ask questions, and anything else involving science news and whatnot.
PLEASE KEEP FOOD RELATED POSTS TO A MAXIMUM...asi that is how I roll... just keep them on topic...

now, it just would not be me to make a good idea for a hread and not ask my signature food questions, so... How do you like your cookies? I like mine hard on the outside for structure, and soft on the inside... yum.
please attach this food question to an on topic answer if you wish. no answers solely on the cookies!!!!

I have a theory. Bethesda lives in the middle of the Earth.

No, but really... science is hard.

its a science thread. SCIENCE QUESTIONS AND DISUSSIONS! nothing about the possible whereabouts of bethesda HQ. make a thread for that.

Crumbled cookies? That's new to me. I like hot and soft cookies... but not ones that like crumble and make a mess all over. :cookie:

Bleh..science. I prefer to believe it all happens by magic. Life is simpler and the difficult questions of the universe are easily answered with "because a wizard did it".

I think the fact that Bethesda is alive is a scientific mystery in and of itself.

Indeed. Why are pizzas in the shape of circles and pizza slices in the shape of triangles? Because a wizard did it.

lol. The higgs... I always thought that it just may be the missing link in the big band theory as molecules moving and at just the right time collided, forming a higgs just for a second, and the wonderful laws of physics state the higgs falls apart, resulting in a lovely sized explosion, like a mini supernova. do this across the universe and you have a big bang. PLEASE NOTE: the universe has been here an eternity. the probablility of a simultaneous higgs creation and seperation is slim to near none, but the time for it to happen techincally was infinity years, so anything with an infinite timespan, no matter how low of a chance, it will happen.

So why does poop smell bad?

Due to certain chemicals found in poop. Including, but not limited to, hydrogen sulfide.

So why does poop smell bad?

Odd question, but okay... Poop smells bad for multiple reasons. One, it is usually covered with bacteria, some worse than others, which thrive in your colon and are taken with your poo. Second, crap goes through about 70-80 feet of tubing and marinates in your stomach for a good 4 hours while it is broken down by hydrocloric acid. it then travels through your intestines, which processes any nutrients and water, leaving you with a hard substance, A.K.A. your crap. the waste that is left behind consists of whatever undigestable thing found in that sandwich you had for lunch. once it comes out, it has gone through a process which would have taken about a week to 3 weeks in real time just sitting there. Leave a sandwich on your front doorstep for a month and you get the picture.

Here are two common myths in astronomy:

The Myth: Polaris is the brightest star in the northern hemisphere night sky

Sirius is actually brighter with a magnitude of ?1.47 compared to Polaris’ 1.97 (the lower the number the brighter the star). The importance of Polaris is that its position in the sky marks North – and for that reason it is also called the “North Star”. Polaris is the brightest star in the constellation Ursa Minor and, interestingly, is only the current North Star as pole stars change over time because stars exhibit a slow continuous drift with respect to the Earth’s axis.

The Myth: There is a dark side of the moon

Actually – every part of the moon is illuminated at sometime by the sun. This misconception has come about because there is a side of the moon which is never visible to the earth. This is due to tidal locking; this is due to the fact that Earth’s gravitational pull on the moon is so immense that it can only show one face to us. Wikipedia puts it rather smartly thus: “Tidal locking occurs when the gravitational gradient makes one side of an astronomical body always face another; for example, one side of the Earth’s Moon always faces the Earth. A tidally locked body takes just as long to rotate around its own axis as it does to revolve around its partner. This synchronous rotation causes one hemisphere constantly to face the partner body.”

You can't explain the tides!!!!1

it deals with the gravitational forces of the sun and moon depending on the location of said sun and moon.

The blue ellipse around the earth prepresents the forces of gravity on the water.

The rotation of the earth also had an effect.

CONSIDER IT, EXPLAINED.

No one got my O'Reilly reference. In short, he thinks we can't explain how tides work so it must be god controlling them.
