Is there any reason to delay the main questline?

I know that there are reasons to delay the Imperial/Stormcloak conflict questlines. How does the world change as you go through it? Does it change when you end it?

I just completed the Main Quest a few hours ago, and from what i can tell it doesn't really have a major impact on the world. There are still random encounters with Dragons. So from what i've seen i dont think the world will be effected by the choices you made with the quest.

There is a quest during the MQ that affects where you will have battles in the Civil War.

I don't know if they are tied together (as if you do the CW first, you have to do some of the MQ) but I finished the MQ before I did the Civil War and I did not have any quest progression issues prior to any of the patches.

If you do the MQ before message to whiterun, you'll affect which areas you fight in the civil war. Otherwise, it doesn't change anything.

So what changed after the civil war other than having new Jarls and guards? I just finished the civil war quest line but i havnt played at all since. What should i expect to change? i finished the civil war as a stormcloak if it matters.

Biggest reason to delay the main quest is to delay the appearance of dragons.

Morchai, not trying to be obtuse... but how do you delay the appearance of dragons? They make their appearance in the initial cut scene? Do they not show up again until you go on the mission to the western watchtower? So if you don't go to Whiterun ... ?

If you don't give the Dragon Stone to the mage in Whiterun, there will be no dragons in your game. It's pretty interesting, at first.

I am totally going to do that next run through. Maybe finish up the Thieves and the College and Bard lines.... first. That would be nifty.

Do you still word wall?

I finished the DB questline and some side quests and did not go to the western watchtower until I was level 50 and had collected about 16 words without ever seeing a dragon other than Alduin in the beginning. That includes several mountaintops where the wall was sitting there unguarded. Zero souls to activiate them, but a nice list of words ready to go.
Be aware though, depending on your level, once you do start the main quest you jump right into elder dragons.

Yes, you can still learn from the word walls if you wait with giving Farengar the dragonstone :)

I just completed Alduin's Wall at level 63, 220 hours.

YEAH!!!

Really though, I do a bunch of side quest stuff first because once I am done with the main quest of a game.. it just feels "done." Or like there's not a lot left to do.. and I'm gonna have to start a new game soon... :(

unless there's a healthy chunk of DLC :)

Meh, this is going to happen with whatever you do later in the game (scaled enemies who will eat your lunch). Depending on character, I found the nastier dragons easier to handle than the Superman Draugr that you'll run into in every dungeon at higher levels, who will lol at you immediately before spraying your brain across the wall.

That and Forsworn Briarhearts. Nothing like getting two-shotted with a character that's almost bored killing literally everything else in the game.

Main reason would be... if you want to explore without dragons getting in the way.

And if you're one-handed, you'd be better off waiting at least until you're 30 something to get dragonbane. Kind of a waste to get to the lower level versions. This applies to some stuff in the Thieves Guild as well.

I gave the Dragon Stone to the mage in Whiterun. Next quest starting was Dragon Rising but I waited to be at level 20-25 to do it.

It's only after you kill your first dragon in Whiterun that they spawn. You can collect words for shouts until you can unlock them with souls.

I only delay the main quest because of dragons, and how they are so annoying. Other than that, there really is no reason to delay it.

Oh, okay. I usually just avoid giving the mage the stone; it feels weird to leave the jarl hanging if you take off right after relinquishing the stone.

A good reason to delay is it triggers random dragon attacks and they're just a nuisance. In no time you'll be able to kill them easily and they just become a bother. They're the cliff racers of Skyrim. As much as I enjoy being the dragon born and using shouts, in my next game I'll put it off just so I don't have to bother with the dragons.

This, although PC users can disable random dragons via console.

There is Dragonbane too. The earlier you get it the weaker it will be. So if you do it early, it will not last in your service. That said, I hardly used it anyway since smithed and enchanted weapons can beat the ones found in the game pretty much every time.
