Really sickens me and reminds me of an incident that happened to a classmate of mine who is hearing impaired. The classmate got robbed of like $2500+ of computer equipment used to help him learn. Hopefully the little [censored] that stole the chair will OD in a back alley or something.

On one hand, I feel bad for the family. But with the way of the world in this day and age, it's not safe to leave anything you really want to keep outdoors, heck, even your home isnt safe.

There's some sick people in this world. Someone stole some charity money from the pub here a few weeks ago. You've got to keep an eye on everything now, you can't just leave stuff like you used to be able to.

"...the wheelchair was stolen from her van parked outside the family's home in south Philadelphia on Saturday." - Mother
"That's our main means of getting him out of the house." - Mother

Where was the child if the wheelchair was at/in the van and that his only means of transportation ?

Yup saw something similar in an episode of that smoking gun presents world's dumbest criminals. Guy stole some charity money off a counter that was going to be used to pay for a funeral.

Seems like altruism just doesn't exist anymore and it's every man/woman for themselves.

I feel for the family but they've got to know better than to leave anything like that sitting where somebody can get it. I know it was in her van but something that's worth that much money you'd be better off taking in the house with you.

Around here, the rural houses/farms are targeted just as much. Less people around to witness etc etc.
Farm yards get their machinery, quad bikes, diesel etc stolen.

Though stealing a wheelchair is worse than that, but nothing seems too low anymore.

Whilst I understand that's the case with a laptop, handbag or other stuff that's frequently targeted by opportunist thieves, I suspect most people think that even petty criminals have enough morality (or not enough interest) to steal a wheelchair. That's pretty low.

I really hope that they either find the thief or the thief has a moment of conscience and returns it.
Unfortunately, considering the article said it was a fancy wheelchair worth over a grand (close to two) I doubt the plea to him/her to return it worked the way it was supposed to. Now they just know it's an expensive wheelchair. :(

A. Money
B. Anyone will buy something at a discounted price. Or, if the Wheelchair is advanced enough, it's components could be salvaged and sold for parts.

Not neccassarily a chop shop, but if someone stole the wheelchair, they obviously had a base idea of the chair's value. If it has an onboard computer, they could have stripped it down for pieces and sold it off, it's much like when thieves break into old buildings to steal the copper wiring.

There's a difference between not being escpecially alturististic and being a scumbag. But yeah, as much as I'd like to see the thief pummled to death I guess we could hope for that due process and law thing to get him too.

I'm sure the thief has already justified the theft to themselves. If they're a drug addict then they'll probably never think about it again, and if not they probably figure they "only" ripped off an insurance company. They've obviously been done wrong because they're poor, so they deserve free stuff.

I've seen petty criminals use the same justification, and dismiss any loss and suffering on the part of their victims as an inconvenience at worst. They've obviously never had the ignominy of trying to pursue an insurance claim with its attendant paperwork, raised premiums, excess and the likelihood of having the claim rejected anyway: not exactly trivial, especially for those on incomes that often don't exceed that of the criminal anyway: and that's assuming that the victim actually could actually afford insurance cover for the loss in question. But some people remain resolute and confident in excusing their own indiscretions.
