I think you should get punished for dying.

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 11:00 pm

Like, you die and then you just load the save and everything is back to normal. I think there should be a gold penalty. Because dying doesn't matter anymore, I just save before I go into a dungeon, if I die, I just reload and start again.

What do you think?

I think you should consider the Dead Is Dead playstyle. It's pretty much the hardcoe mode for Skyrim.

So make it matter. Every time you die, open inventory, go to misc, click gold and drop half of it.

You do...losing all progress from your last save. Plus, dying is never fun.

Though in fable, you never die, you just get knocked down and permanantly get a scar on your characters face. A bit more permanant then save and reload I suppose.

Not an MMO.

The punishment of being killed is losing progress made since the last save.
Don't save often = larger punishment.
Getting killed in most singleplayer games doesn't tend to have a big impact unless you want it to.

Reloading the game is annoying. That's how you get punished for dying. At first I thought dying didn't matter, but then I realized that fun is the most important aspect of playing the game, and I didn't have fun dying, so now I try to avoid dying. Seriously.

just like how every other balance issue in the game is up to the player to use/avoid, reroll a new character every time you die.

good luck have fun

There was a mod with Fallout 3 where death didn't automatically load your last save. Instead, you "went unconscious and were dragged by a helpful someone" to the nearest safe spot or a single town (Megaton). Then penalties were applied like you dropped/lost some caps, items, etc. wherever you died.

Of course you could always *choose* to load your last save anyway, but at least it gave an alternative.

And the 'Dead is Dead' playstyle just makes it over the top, you'll never make any progress.

I just want like a 500 gold penalty or something, or a loss of stamina for a certain amount of time etc.

In this age of clouds and invasive social networks, your facebook/twitter/g+ should make an update for you saying "IM NOOB LOL!" whenever you die.

True. It's kind've dumb how the player-character is essentially immortal without any consequences for "dying". Forcing dead is dead rules on the player is perhaps a bit extreme, but at the very least if some bandits kill you, they should steal your items. Your stats could even take a temporary hit due to injury.

Casual gamers wouldn't like that though. :spotted owl:

Edit - nevermind, stupid idea. If the player lost all their items they'd most likely just load up an earlier save.

Well, losing the progress since the last time you saved is a punishment. You might not consider this too bad a deal, especially if you save once a minute, but considering most games nowadays have checkpoints like after each step forward, Skyrim is harsh for "modern" standards.

Reload your previous save, kill the baddie who killed you, put 500 septims in their inventory.
Simple.

Dying is bad enough. Half the time, I get into a dungeon, clear it, and die on the end boss only to have to do it over again. I give myself enough of a handicap because I'm too focus looking at the skeleton that's been crucified!

I dont see how you would get penalities for dying since when you die in this game you're kinda dead. And loading a previous save does not mean "magical respawn" it means "i died and completly lost the game, thank god that this game has a save system"

I think it's worth it. The time I spend playing Skyrim on a character I know is going to be deleted the moment it dies makes it so much more fun. Sure, I lose a character if I screw up, but that's a price I'm willing to pay for such a great gameplay improvement.

I think like in GTA, Skyrim should have like this medieval hospital, and you wake up in there, pay the guys 500 coins and walk out.

I have my friend sit next to me while I play and, every time I die, I punch him in the face.

Isn't that more punishing him than you? ;)
