Thought you could, but can't thread

Post » Sun Jun 24, 2012 5:33 pm

This thread is for listing things that you thought you would be able to do in the game (either before it came out or after you started playing) but later realized that you couldn't do it.

For example:

Fishing. The water has normal fish in the water now. I found a fishing pole. But apparently fishing is a lost skill to the average adventurer and even the hunters refuse to do it in your presence.

Making a baked potato. I can find potatoes everywhere. I even have salt to add to them. I can even find baked potatoes (they exist in the game). But apparently the incredible amount of skill and dedication to the cooking arts is beyond what a mere adventurer can handle.

Making arrows. Somebody is making them. There is a Fletcher living in Solitude. But my character, though he can put together the most advanced armors and weapons, can't seem to figure out how to put a feather on a stick.

Anyone else with things they were surprised they couldn't do after starting the game?

Starting your own trading comapny. A review in a magizine said you could and I thought it sounded brilliant. But it turned out they lied. :(

I thought everyone knew that Beth announced before release that you could only catch fish with your hands.

I was wrong.

I thought that you would be able to become a bard and play instruments. I thought that you would be able to fight underwater.

I was aware that we could catch them by hand, but when I saw the hunters sitting around with fishing pole beside them I thought we might could use those also. Course as it turns out we can't even pick up the fishing poles. :(

Shout, use magic or fight from horseback.

Use swords under water (I remember killing lots of slaughterfish that way in Morrowind...).

Kill a certain very powerful and very [censored]y npc in a certain city inhabited by a certain guild.

I think the technicality here is when you help the shipping company. I think you can start collecting money from them once you do. Not exactly what you expected but neither was "catching fish" automatically associated with "your hands" and not a fishing pole.

Fighting on horseback would have been awesome.

After reading all this, it sounds like stuff that can't be that difficult to program?! (Though I don't nothing anything about proffessional programming!)

I stand up for Bethesda to sit down for a year or two, to add an Expansion to Skyrim that puts all this stuff in to make the gaming experience even more intense. Concentrate on making a world without constraints! I'd gladly pay another 60€ for that and I am sure a lot of people would too. Instead of always making half finished games, improve one to it's peak! Doesn't matter how long it takes.

Jump while sprinting. (WTF?)
Rotate camera while weapons are drawn.
Run out of arrows because they're so rare. I have so many I throw them away just to keep it to a realistic number to carry around.
Actually feel challenged by a dragon attack. I get more resistance from your average bandit boss.
Have an impact on the events in the game.
Have consequence to my actions.

We were told we could affect the economy, turns out this is not true at all.

I thought I'd be able to do the civil war quests without starting the main quest. Imagine my surprise.

Underwater fighting is my big thing. I usually play with an Argonian, and I loved swimming wars. With the removal of underwater fighting, the shipwrecks are all boring now, and the water is seriously lacking in predators. With a good chunk of the map underwater, it just makes the sea a no-play zone that you just have to get through/across/over to 'do stuff'.

I miss that :( Sure, on PC you can use the "animcam" command, but it's just not the same.

I'll have to remember that one. I knew tfc, but that doesn't do much good while moving.

There's some really strange, quirky changes in Skyrim.

I thought I would be able to attack under water (I thought my game was bugged when I couldn't), and I thought I would be able to influence the local economy.
