Thoughts on Powerleveling

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 1:13 pm

I'm guilty of powerleveling. When I start crafting, I just can't stop.

I'll mine iron and gold ore, whenever I find an ore vein, and I buy iron and gold ore+ingots when merchants have them. I also buy leather and make leather armor from it. I'll then take the smithed items and then start enchanting them. When the merchants run out of money to buy my enchanted gear, along with my alchemy potions, I'll then go visit Eorlund Grey Mane and pay for training so he'll have money to buy my stuff.

If I feel too powerful, I'll just use weaker weapons and equipment, so it's no big deal. Crafting can be addicting sometimes.

Well, crafting is how my character makes all his money. I buy some regular gear from a blacksmith, or make some myself, temper it to legendary, enchant it with 2 enchants and then sell it back. And I have a smithing and enchanting clothing set so every piece of gear sells for entirely way too much at 10k+.

It can be funny to do sometimes, but that's it. If anyone is into that sort of thing, whatever.

After wasting over 1,200 hours of my life in the game, sometimes I feel like leveling my skills fast so I can enjoy a build without having to kill a thousand creatures or cast a million spells. So sometimes, I grind and power-level my skills but that's my game so I do what makes me happy.

Whats the big deal? Let people play the way they want to, someone wants to power level in a single player game-let them.

It's a personal choice. There's no 'cheating' in a single player game, and IRL wouldn't you want to get better at a skill a quickly as possible?

I personally don't do it very often at all - occasionally I'll use soul trap or muffle to get my conjuration or illusion up to level 30 or so. But that's about it - again, a personal preference.

I level up at my own pace I never concern myself with jumping up levels as fast as humanly possible it becomes a grind and then it becomes, not fun.

I power leveled my first character after I found out all of the enchanting and smithing tricks. I shot up a full 15 levels through exploiting it, and wasted a ton of time. I found the game incredibly boring afterwards, so I started a new character. I now limit my characters to one crafting ability and never abuse the exploits. The game is a lot more fun now.

IMO, powerleveling involving smithing is ok, becuase think about this: a smith crafts something over and over again, and the more he practices it, the better he gets at it, and more practice will allow him to forge new various types of weapons and armor.

Others have mentioned smithing. I grind it too. Hell, I grind all the crafting skills to a certain degree. If you have the materials, why wouldn't you make the finished product? It's like having a mage but only occassionally using magic to defeat enemies because you don't want to grind the skill. Therefore, if I walk out of a Dwarven ruin with me and the follower loaded to the gills with Dwarven metals, I'm going to make as many suits of armor or bows as I possibly can for the money, leveling, and increase in armor protection that comes with the next perk.

Same with enchanting. If I have 20 filled soul gems and 20 items worth enchanting, then what's the point of soul trapping/collecting soul gems in the first place if I don't use them?

I'd rather cast 500 muffle spells in a row than actaully using them in a dungeon.. You know.. seeing as it makes noise as you can't have the "quiet casting" perk for a while..

Or.. when do you ever actually use soul trap? I buy my gems.

That being said I really only do it if I make a new character that won't be using magic.

I did this with Muffle when I did the misc quest at the College with the special gloves and "purifying" the lights. My magic regen went so high that I couldn't help myself, so cast Muffle up to level 80 or so.

I will do it if it's for a specific purpose. Like I wanted to use Invisibility, but didn't want my character to be all about mind-trickery and using calm/fear etc. so I skipped a little.

Otherwise I won't powerlevel.

Training and powerleveling skills is how you get to the point where your character is fun to play because the perks define your character. the higher your various skills, the higer your level, the more perks you have, the more defined your character is.

I only powerlevel attributes I never use. Usually one of the magic ones. especially so in skyrim as you need to level up to get more perk points.

Yes, powerleveling UNUSED skills is the best way to do it. Then you can still have fun leveling the skills you enjoy using.

power leveling svcks all the fun out of the game and ruins it but if you created a build you like and you want to test out how it handles when your at endgame then i dont see a problem with it

So, this concept has bothered me since I began playing Skyrim. Powerleveling. If you don't know what I mean, think about smithing iron daggers over and over until you reach 100 smithing (before 1.5 patch). Or casting Soul Trap on dead creatures to raise your conjuration. It is SO tempting, I'm not going to lie. But in my opinion, it really does take away form some aspects of the game. What are your thoughts? Do you do it? Can you justify it?

No, I don't do it, its not for me
But thats in my game. If someone else enjoys powergaming (and every RPG I've ever played since D&D in 1979 there have been players who enjoy powergaming) thats fine by me, what they do in their game doesn't affect me

Wanna power level? RP - oh wait thats not power leveling, LMAO - DONT DO IT - it ruins the experience, unless you making 500 dagers for your "store" - wish we could have stores in skyrim

It's a single player game, so play it how you choose. People seem to forget that Skyrim is a single player game so power leveling does not matter, cheats do not matter, not finishing the main quest till you've done everything else (a lot of the idiots like to use this as some sort of accomplishment, but it just makes them sound stupid.) does not matter. Do whatever you want.

I power-leveled my smithing. That's really about it. But I agree with you on how it can detract from the game.

I'm starting clean. Dead is dead, you know?

No,sorry and it doesn't make any sense, neither is it fun becouse there is no high level content.Maybe Dawnguard will provide some challenge for high lvl chars but doubt it.I think it will take a long,long....long long time to reach lvl 81 without the Oghma glitch.

I power level skills that I don't use for that character. And usually only after level 50. For the main part of the game I played as a rogue, so I power leveled the skills I would never use with that character. I don't think there is anything wrong with it. I still put in tons of my own time to improve my character. Unlike the book glitch which is just outright cheating. It does take a long time but it's doable. I'm at 80 without using the book glitch.

I power leveled my smithing skill. But not because I wanted to increase my level. I just wanted better gear.

I powerlevelled my smithing to 100 because there′s no way you′ll get to 100 normally.
