A thread for non-anime fans

I've seen Bleach and Dragon Ball(if it counts?) and wasn't too impressed(DB wasn't terrible i don't guess..but i have better ways to spend my time).

However I have nothing against Anime and have considered trying some of the less childish ones out, most likely will very soon.

A lot of the hate seems to stem from the misconception that every single anime out there is childish and that they're all exactly the same. There is a lot of mature anime out there, and I don't mean mature like gory or sixual, I mean mature, where the only difference between real life and the anime is that it's a cartoon. But sadly most people just see anime like Naruto, Bleach and One Piece and assume all anime is like that. That's basically the equivalent of a foreigner coming here, watching an episode of Barney and assuming all American shows are like that.

I never liked anime at all, even those mature ones. The only one I ever watched when I was a wee little squirt was Pokemon. Then again the orginal Pokemon shows are badass!

I totally agree. The only "anime" I ever liked was the good old stuff like Gundam Wing (or whatever it was), Zoids, Avatar: The Last Airbender (not old, but still REALLY cool, love the martial arts behind it). That was all cool. But crap like Cowboy Bepop and the other stuff with little girls with massive boobs swinging oversized weapons and talking really fast. I just can't stand to watch.

I respect your right to watch it, and if you like. I myself can't stand to watch it. The only other anime that I find really cool, but have never bothered to watch (simply because I can't find it, damnit), was the one with Alucard (don't know the name).

What part of Cowboy Bebop had that in it  .

I tend to agree with most people on the whole "all anime is the same" thing. I don't hate anime (in fact, I've watched quite a few of them), but they almost always have the same stupid traits in every show. To show you what I mean, I've taken a list from somewhere unlinkable:

Purple-Haired [censored] (PHB) as a regular image. The list of shows that had a PHB is depressingly long. Usually a bad girl, sometimes the hero (as in Ghost In The Shell).

Annoying Squeaky Schoolgirls (ASS). God, too many to list. This must be the sixual component to the American obsession with anime. They are usually wholesome, innocent, and deserve to SUFFER. I knew we were in for a rough ride while watching Full Metal Panic, when they showed a kid stealing the ASS protagonist's panties. And some series are nothing but an ocean of ASSes. Sailor Moon, Evangelion, etc. etc. It probably originated with either Speed Racer's snotty girlfriend Trixie, or with that green-haired [censored] Lum in Urusei Yatsura--another "classic" series I cannot stand to watch.

The Bishounen (BS) is a common thing—the cute boy hero. I'm thinking of that idiot in Full Metal Panic who “guards” the “important” teenage girl, and screws up constantly. Or Gene Starwind in Outlaw Star. (What a hideous name.) Many series are like BS beauty pageants. Wonder if they're inserted for the gay otaku crowd? Most anime BSes are complete drooling morons—but get the girl anyway.

Annoying Squeaky Little Kid (ASLK). Also nearly omnipresent. Sometimes has pink hair.

Freaky Sidekick (FS). Usually not human. Sometimes mechanical.

Homicidal Bad Guy (HBG). Extremely stiff. Often talks too much, sometimes not at all. Usually looks remarkably Caucasian and hairy. Recent series have portrayed a litany of crazed Russian mobsters as HBGs.

Old Boss (OB). White-haired geezer who gives orders. And talks too much.

I really want to like anime, I really do, but when you've seen one anime, and you've essentially seen them all, it gets a little monotonous.

EDIT: And don't bring up the "but stereotypical anime is only in the teen aged anime, and not the mature stuff!" because it's in all of it. I went back to watching Ghost in the Shell and I caught an episode of Cowboy Bebop, and they're both "mature" and also contain much of the stuff in the list above. If I didn't already like them, I wouldn't be able to stand them at this point. If anime stopped being the same crap as always, I might actually like it more.

I used to be a big fan of Sailor Moon, and I like some Studio Ghibli movies, but other than that, I'm not really into anime. I just prefer western cartoons, especially 3D and stop-motion stuff (and yeah, I know some smartarse is going to come and correct me saying that technically anime refers to all animation).

That's an anime? I always thought it was made in USA or something like that.

a.k.a every plot to everything ever?
...not really.

Care to explain? Usually, this idea is the catalyst for many things and is used all the time, usually with some minimal re-tooling.

But they can't deny most of the main male characters do look like girls and have crazy hair.

Huh? Rarely are there girly looking men in anime, especially as the main character. http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/8791/38321569.jpg

I've seen more anime with girly looking "boys" that are actually girls cross-dressing.

I can't understand a damn thing they say (no surprise).

Very, very generic (though that's a bit hypocritical of me, considering many people may think the things I like are generic and all the same).

Childlike presentation, and the animation is (quite literally) all the same.

Yeah, I'm going to get completely destroyed for 'stereotyping', I'm sure of it. Even though the above things are honestly what comes to mind when it comes to anime. I just don't understand the attraction to it...at all.

I like Dragonball ^_^

I don't really understand the hate at simple plots about unlikely teenage heroes. Well actually I do, but they're far from unique to anime. Harry Potter or Eragon anyone? (Granted, they don't have crazy hairstyles). What matters to me is if there's a good story, and wether or not it's told well. Anime can do just as well as another medium.

Personally I've never gotten into anime much, since the dialogue often seems rather unrealistically drawn-out to me. Don't know if that makes sense, but I'm tired and I don't know how to put it better. Also, I really dislike listening to Japanese, so unless it's dubbed I probably won't like it.

Meh, never been a fan. It's not that I don't like the stories but I honestly can get past the art style. I have trouble taking anything serious when the main characters eyes are as large as dinner plates. Seems pretty closed minded, but it's my opinion and I'm entitled to it. I did like A Ghost in the Shell though, but that's about as far as I went, and I'm sure the Anime community will probably deny that it's an Anime because it reached out to more people than the rabid inner core of Anime fans.

Actually I'm going to disagree with you there, most guys I see in anime are very feminine.

This is a short music video of my absolute favorite anime, and it has a much deeper story than "big swords", "power up for three episodes", and "ultimate badguy bent on destruction".

I've only really watched one anime in it's entirety and that was the OVA of Hellsing. I'm considering getting into One Piece if I can find the priginal version and not the butchered 4kids version, but then I may as well just read the Manga. I'm not really an anime fan, but I have no problem with anime, if an anime is good then I'll watch it.

I also watched pokemon. In retrospect, it kinda svcked. I see a lot of people on here who AFAIK are grumpy 20-something males with avatars of cute little anime girls...I find that kinda wierd. Not suggesting you're all pedophiles, just that I don't have an avatar of D.W. from Arthur (although one person did)

... seriously?

I can understand someone not enjoying Cowboy Bebop. I can even see someone not enjoying the jazz music that made me fall in love with the series. But in the same breath you equate Cowboy [censored] Bebop with something like (based on your description) Bleach? That's just... sacrilegious on so many levels.

I mean this all in jest, of course (but really, calling it crap....*mutter*)

The only anime's I have ever watched are pokemon and dragon ball-z (I mean who doesn't like listening to guys gruntover 9000 for a whole 30 minutes?) and that's it.

This, and fix'd.

Quick picture for all those saying "the eyes are always huge" or "they have silly hair"

Many do not have these features, but I think this is a good example.

See, with that video, I don't mind the action, or any of the exterior shots or anything, it's just the people. Like someone above said, I can't really take them seriously.

Even if all anime looked the same, like some people here say, still looks better than 99% of western cartoons. http://test.ph/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/Johnny-Test.jpg

I've seen NGE, and I quite liked it. That said, it wasn't immune to "Same old Anime syndrome". It's full of silly little perversion and "fan service" every second the giant robots aren't fighting. I liked the maturity, seriousness (part of the time), and especially the darkness, but it still had a lot of the campy anime traits that every other series has.

The only Manga I have read and liked was Uzumaki, Gyo and enigma of amigara fault by Junji Ito simply because it was so bat[censored] insane. Anyone know anymore by him like this?

Wat. Dragonball Z is still badass. I always go back and watch some of those epic battles.

I approve of any post insulting Johnny Test. God that show's like a plague that keeps spreading to more and more timeslots.

If I had to chose to live forever with only either a selection of all American cartoons, or Japanese anime to watch, I'd go with the anime. I can't think of any long running American cartoons that are mature enough for an advlt, yet there are oodles and oodles of mature anime, despite what people seem to believe.

First I'll have to ask what all anime (that you can remember) that you've watched.

Second, I'll direct you to http://www.youtube.com/watch#playnext=1&playnext_from=TL&videos=t_BssozeBcA&v=qqvsUs-iQvg. The beginning of the show just perfectly sets the mood for how the entire show is. Blues, gangsters, and double crosses. The animation quality is very awesome, especially compared to other anime of the time. The story is much more mature (a lost loved one and a mission for revenge) and Spike's hair is only slightly tinted green (looks mostly black)! :P
