Transitioning from PC to console - Preference

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 6:03 am

Hi, I've been a diehard PC person for most things but am thinking of making the change this time to get Skyrim for my PS3.

For those who have went from a PC to a console, was it hard to get used to? I mean, most PC games just simply look better and have a certain way that the controls are laid out. I just wonder if the game is just as enjoyable on a console and did it take some getting used to when you switched?

The only reason that I'm thinking of changing is because I need to upgrade my PC to a better CPU/mobo/graphics, and with Christmas coming up, $$ is a bit tight right now, but I really want to start playing on Friday. Plus, I have a 24" LCD on my PC and a 52" LED in the living room.

Post up your thoughts, for us who have never played a game ported to all three platforms. :-)

My thoughts? dont go to console. YOu can hook up your PC to your TV and make gradual upgrades to your PC without ti having to cost a fortune at all. Most PC parts aren't really expensive when you buy em one at a time and know where to look.

I was once forced to only play on a console due to not living home for a few weeks and it was honestly really frustrating being so restricted in terms of what you can do, I'm not trying to hate here, but when you're used to PC gaming, not being able to customize stuff and make the game your own is just so annoying :P

If you switch, mods will stop existing for you.

Wat? Oh .. I see the reason. Even still you can probably pull better visuals than a PS3 at a higher resolution. It's not like 24" is small when you're in front of it. Compared to your field of view it'll be equal or bigger than the 52" depending on where you sit.

The PC version of a game is always the best one, barring horrible porting that produces severe gameplay / technical problems.

yeah, the first time i played on a console after 3 years of not having one , the gamepad took a few days to really get used to , and they still hurt my old man assembly line worked hands . If the didnt make the damned thing so small it wouldnt be a problem.

If you already have a PS3, I guess it's the better choice (at least until you get money enough to upgrade your PC). But if you have to buy a PS3, I'd rather use that money to upgrade my PC. It's also easy to hook your PC up to your TV, so screen size is no excuse.

Edit: Also want to add that this thread is just asking for a platform war.
It's also misplaced and should be in the community discussion, not Skyrim section of the forum IMO.

Well, I can't go back from Oblivion PC to Oblivion Console. I'll be getting Skyrim for the 360 though, but since it's a new experience, I'm sure it'll be fine, I didn't mind Fallout3/New Vegas on the 360, and being focused around guns, I was worried the lack of precision would kill me (Though the slow turning speed sometimes does).

In summation, it's not hard, especially if the console is going to give you a better experience because of poor hardware on your PC, assuming mods aren't important to you (And I know they really aren't for the vast majority of people, even PC players)

Oblivion was the first RPG I played on console rather than PC (though I still play lots of games, like WoW, on PC). I liked using a controller, but thought combat and aim were just a little wonky, but not enough to annoy me once I got used to it. I just finished playing Borderlands, which is like an FPS RPG, and I thought they nailed the controls so well that I actually preferred them to mouse/keyboard. And that's the point I'm at right now. Controllers just feel natural.

And combat in Skryim looks very well suited to playing with a console controller, so that's that route I'm going. I just like the ease of playing on a console, I like sitting on my couch with my feet propped up, I like having my whole home theater adding to the experience (yeah, I could lug my PC into the living room, but I need it in my office). Also, I like playing the vanilla game, at least on the first playthrough, so mods are unimportant to me. If any mods come out that are so cool I have to have them, I'll wait for a cheap GOTY version.

If your PC could be significantly improved by upgrading one component at a time, then do that before going to console. The developers have confirmed that the 'low' settings on PC are the console equivalent, so even a small upgrade to get your PC running 'medium' settings is substantial. When you take the general console negatives into account too, such as no mouse/keyboard, PC is the overwhelming winner. I played Oblivion on PC and console, and PC was by far the better experience.

However, if you're in a situation where the only reasonable upgrade is to basically buy a new PC, then you're in a jam. What you could do is buy a quality mobo/CPU, and get an older solid GPU to save $$ because Skyrim won't be too taxing. That could get you to 'high' settings right there. Then you could upgrade the GPU and power supply at a later date. If you can't afford a decent mobo/CPU at the get go, then reluctantly I recommend buying the console version.

He asked a simple question, not for advice on upgrading his PC.

Anyways... I've played Fallout 3, Morrowind, and Oblivion on both console and PC and it's not really that hard to adapt. Besides the lack of mods, the gameplay is the same and the graphics aren't terrible on consoles.

I have PC and PS3. The PS3 mostly plays movies and collects dust :lmao:

I've been planning on getting Fallouts and Oblivion for the PS3 too, but haven't gotten around to it. Mostly i have it for console exclusive games, that there really haven't been many that interest me lately

You realise that a monitor has about 5 times the rendering power than a TV the same size right? A larger TV screen means that the pixies are stretched out to cover it, reducing the quality of the picture since the consoles and TVs have hard built settings that can't be overridden. On the PC and computer you select the resolution you play on, so you can play in 800x600 (if you want) and the picture would not be distorted.

A TV 52inch TV can do 1080p while a 24inch monitor can do 2600p ( I know, i have both of them)

I tried to switch for the console once to get to play some console exclusive games and a couple of co-op/pvp games. Didn't work out. The controller hated me (funny how one can fairly easily adjust to have 20-30 keycommands on a keyboard + a 5-button mouse, but can't handle an Xbox controller). Sold the box after it had sat idle at the side of my TV for about 6 months. That's just not my thing I guess.

Honestly OP if you have both a computer and a PS3 you should make the best of both worlds.

I sold my PS3 because I was never playing it, despite being in love with GTA and RE in 1080p.

In the end, it comes down to which you prefer to play Skyrim on. I've played ES games on console and PC before, and I always preferred PC. Not so much for the mods (they are nice but not necessary) but because of the controls and more control options than the PS3 controller.

If you prefer to play Skyrim on the PC, upgrade your PC first. There's no reason you should forego your preference just to play it now, unless you value playing it now that much higher than playing it the way you want to play it.

2600p, what? I'm pretty sure that doesn't exist.

A computer monitor is limited to a maximum resolution just like an HDTV. The common resolutions are 1920x1080 (also known as 1080p) and 1920x1200, any higher than that costs a lot of money.

Usually the only visual difference is the resolution.
Here's an example I made, comparing 480p / 720p / 1080p upscaled to 1080p

http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/958/480p.jpg
http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/264/720p.jpg
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/4417/1080pp.jpg

I still primarily play PC games, but I found it much easier to get used to the Xbox controller when I plugged it into my PC with the wireless receiver.

I played Oblivion on the PS3, and the experience, coupled with the forums reaction to the PS3 port to fallout 3 (and it's DLC in particular) means I would definitely wait before purchasing any Bethesda game ported to that system until I knew just how bad the port was.

Have to agree with that. And the fact that there hasn't been a peep about Skyrim's PS3 version is not exactly reassuring.

Well, I went with the PC version, old habits are heard to break. :)

I've not been disappointed, except that the game crashes without any warning, from time to time, but not like it's every hour or anything like that. I'm running at mid-high settings and it's running a lot better than I would have expected. :celebration:

If you switch for Skyrim, don't switch. gamesas games are great for modding, where console is incapable of.

Switch only for games that don't exist in PC, like most Japanese titles. Just tune down your graphic settings to fit it like console and you should be fine.

1.Bring your pc into the living room
2. Hook your PC up to the 52" tv
3. Don't buy a ps3
4. Profit

No ??? Here.
If you must switch, switch to 360, for Halo.

Nope. I did the exact same thing and I've loved every minute since. I even went back and played Oblivion on my PS3 to get ready for Skyrim. I couldn't really stand Oblivion on PC, it annoyed me to no end and really left a bad taste in my mouth; but when I played it on PS3 it just clicked so much better and I ended up having a good time just running around doing quests (instead of surfing mod sites).

The only thing I wish now is that I could have had Morrowind on the PS3. Oh well, can't win em all.

Edit: Graphics will always be a little lower on consoles than PC games, but honestly I stopped caring about graphics years ago. Truth be told Skyrim is downright beautiful anyways, not because of how high resolution it is, but because of what it is. Mountains, clouds, snow, rivers, Aurora's. It's kind of a case like Morrowind, where artistic direction trumps "high resolution so many polygons look at all those polygons".

except that the game crashes without any warning, from time to time

This also hasn't happened to me once. And I have the damn PS3 on all day long with Skyrim in. :P
