Underwater areas.

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 11:11 pm

Does anybody else wish that there were more worthwhile underwater areas with various unique treasures and locations. It would bring a lot more to the game and make the Argonian racial bonus worth it.

wait until you get to Black Marsh or at least the southern hemisphere of Nirn.

The ruins of Winterhold, anyone?

Something like that would work but the land under Winterhold crumbled into the sea so I'd expect much of it is smashed and mixed in with earth & rock

Having underwater areas would be very cool and I hope they add them in DLC.

I think there is a bigger picture we might be missing here. Would I like more absolutely. I would like more of everything. I would like to never be able to finish exploring an interesting RPG world. The bigger picture IMO is in a place like Black Marsh I would not only dissappointed but outraged if Argonian features didn't play a more prodominent role. There should be as many underwater places in Black Marsh as above ground locations. In Skyrim however. I think they did fine not includeing many uses for a feature of a race not native to the area.

would be great, if the latest patch hadn't rendered all underwater areas completely void of anything viewable

I was very disappointed with Bethesda taking away our ability to fight underwater, and with it the ability to do lots of neat things under and on the sea. Likewise with the removal of waterwalking. Most of the water in this game is in an arctic region (the Sea of Ghosts), and they expect people to swim in there? Are they nuts? I loved the Jewel of the Rumare in Oblivion, and using it to poke around every underwater area I came across, especially the flooded dungeons. There are a few wrecks you can swim down to in Skyrim, with a few chests to pop open, but that seems to be all. Like Bacillus said, it hardly even seems worth the effort. It seems like they removed a lot of opportunities for fun in the game.
I was also looking for more underwater stuff. There is on location with

a ship
underwater. And yes it seems to me that you should be able to swing a weapon underwater. I think Oblivion had it right (maybe Morrowind too as I recall) You can swing a blade or blunt and cast on-touch spells (which don't exist in Skyrim); but could not shoot an arrow or ranged spell underwater.

Miss all of this. Really miss being able to fight underwater. It seems silly that the great Dovakin can fight off mystical dragons...but is a water wimp.

I also miss being able to 1st/3rd person horseback ride (the mod to do this kept crashing my game). AND Morrowind had the best questing I have ever done. You never knew what would happen until it did. Plus in Oblivion horses were cool and served a purpose. In SKyrim they are just too slow and cumbersome. I would rather run/walk. I don't fast travel. I guess I got used to being on foot in Morrowind even with the Striders. I would rather adventure. Which brings us back to where are the underwater adventures? Still all in all a great game and fun.

It's all blurry and out of focus... like you are under water, or something. :turned:

There are a few ship wrecks in the ocean and a handful of places in dungeons and caves but there certainly could be more. I have a helmet of water breathing on two of my characters and little reason to use it. Alchemy could benefit from it if you are looking for the fish but other than that it's not all that helpful other than the ship wrecks. At least one of those is fairly deep.

Have you ever tried to swing a bat or sword or something underwater in real life? The physics of it....just can't happen. Then again horses ride up 90* inclines on mountains without any sweat, so **** physics...

No I have not, but I know I've punched people underwater and they said it hurt (we were just messin around). So they should at least allow hand-to-hand combat. And a blade still cuts even if you cant swing it as hard, not to mention stabbing. Physics. ha at least you mention the thing about the horses... Also, pardon my ignorance, but the existance of harpoon guns has me questioning if you could fire a stronger bow underwater. Somehow I doubt that, so at least it makes sense that you cant do that. And speaking of physics... what about magic? Please know that I'm laughing as I write this, not on some warpath.

Getting ready for a LONG dive. The three ships are on the ocean floor.

It is sad that my intense fear of drowning in real life applied itself to Skyrim waters.. first time I saw the mast of one of those ships, I went for the dive and freaked out ~_~..

Look Morrowind it was there were rewards to go underwater i think there was a dwemer ruin that had one of the most powerful bits of armor in the game and it was worthwhile to explore the water. Oblivion that deteriorated because there's not a lot of coast and just a lot of lake. Skyrim has craploads of waterways and should have caves and dwemer ruins underwater and on far off islands. of course they added life to the water instead of it being a stagnant pool.

Remember Mudan Grotto from Morrowind? And Shrine of Boethia? Thoughh those were epic. Only source for the Shrine was M'aiq. Mudan Grotto I could't even see the area on the map, like completely uncharted.

Anyways yeah the PIlgrims trench in SKyrim. I havn't explored it yet, but I have tried without water breathing. I drowned the first time. The second time I almost drowned...until I DRANK health potions to prevent drowning...

There should be tons of leveled magic trinkets in the gorge beneath Winterhold that never respawn, so you have to wait many many levels to discover what's there and get the best treasure....

Why swim through the sea when you can run on top of it?

Why swin at all when you can use a Scroll of Icarian Flight.

The main issue with no combat underwater is that it means they cannot have any underwater enemies. This completely removes the tension of being underwater. It would be much better if you had to worry about some strange creature swimming up and attacking you while you were out in the ocean. That would make the underwater sequences much more suspenseful. If anything your damage stats could just be reduced 50% underwater or something of that nature. Obviously our character is not exactly human and doesn't share our basic weaknesses so I don't think swinging a sword underwater would be as difficult as it would be for us. Real physics hardly apply here nor should they. It would make the game far too boring.

Lake Ilinata in Falkreath has lots of goodies if you search it thoroughly, and underwater areas in dungeons have chests and stuff as well.

Things I've seen in Lake Illinata...
Spoiler
Near the middle of the lake, there is a small ruin underwater with a chest and some pieces of furniture in the open ceiling, but it's surrounded with a few slaughterfish so be careful. Also near the western shore of the lake, there is a shipwreck with some skeletons and barnacles and I believe a chest underwater.

I think a huge problem with TES is they usually focus on one big aspect of the game then forget about or don't realize what potential their game really has, and all the kinds of cool stuff they could have added. Underwater structures is a big example, because there has never really bin much point for water areas in TES other then it being pretty, and there was one occasion I remember in oblivion when it was used a little bit in a single cave.
